I went with Richard Cooke Safaris because the guy I spoke to and booked with was the same guy who picked me up at the airport and was my PH. I had heard of him through a friend who was very happy with him and I was not disappointed.
I am not a man who is really into velocity and energy figures. I have used both on a fair number of water buffalo and cannot see any difference. If the placement is not right with either neither will the result be. I normally use solids but have used softs and both do the job well. For mine in...
Would be interesting to see what comments this received. I got a bit of a laugh out of it. He is basically saying trophy hunters are assholes but they are needed for conservation.
I had three of his videos on vhs. One of them has him sitting in front of that same ant hill talking about elephant hunting. Looks like that was a scene that didn't make the final cut. The videos were OK but not nearly as entertaining as his books.
Gizmo makes some good points regarding the law as the minimum standard. Now we just need the laws to be influenced by those who hold hunting and wildlife management dear and not those who want to stop it.
I have heard the naming of the 404 to be in line with the popular 303 as Matt stated. I always have wondered if the 04 was a significant year in its development. Released in 1905 I always thought it made sense to be named as Jefferys 1904, 400 cartridge. The 404 Jeffery.
Its a tough situation for sure. I have always thought the law to be a poor bench mark for ethics. Just as there are questionable practices that are legal there may be plenty of activities some find acceptable that are against the law. While generally I will be supportive of how others choose to...
I guide for Leithen Valley Australia and live in the NT. You can look up their website or on face book. Trophies start at 95 sci but you would expect to get better than that. I think the big old worn down bulls make the best trophy but they generally do not score as well. Have attached a photo...
I think we need to be sensitive about what we post on face book and platforms like that. Forget the antis, nothing we say or do will change them but it is the people who have no real view either way that we need to consider. They are the ones we need to show hunting in positive way to. I see...
I think it still is a physiological issue. I fired an ordinary fitting Zastava 375, 30 times in succession over the bonnet of a Toyota and ended up with a shoulder and arm bruised up similar to the picture but not quite as bad. I could still concentrate on the target and put the bullet where it...
Link to a Gritty Bowman podcast with the Bowmars and their side of the story of the spearing of the bear and the dumping by Underarmour. Interesting if you have the time to listen.
I have used a Contour and found it good to use. You can get all sorts of mounts and the new model one I have has GPS tracking on it so you can see your altitude and location as you watch the video. Its small and handy and simple to use.
Just found out I fly out for Harrisburg that morning so will miss the get together. Drop around to booth 1643, Leithen Valley Trophy Hunts and say hello if you get a chance.
My mate and I both hired rifles when we went to Zim as I didn't want the hassle of carting fire arms around. Used the PH 375 for plains game and 500 double for the buffalo and would do it again. We were not charged for the hire or ammunition anyway.
She had pink eyes and nose and looked albino. She did have dark coloured horns. Here is a pic of a young bull we saw on the same hunt that I think is albino. Complete with white horns. He is young and shows potential to be a special trophy. Hope he gets to reach that potential!
I first read use enough gun when I was eleven and Ruark was solely responsible for my African obsession. I can still pick up that book and open to any page and start reading and often do. What separates his books from others is he was a writer who hunted not vice versa and his writing told a...
We get the same type people giving one star reviews on our face book page and telling us how evil and sick we are. It is tempting to respond but I just let it be and they seem to go and annoy James instead.
Ha not at all. I thought about getting her myself but happy for her to drop a few calves with that horn shape over the next few years. No one has seen her before and may never see her again.
Came across this awesome white water buffalo cow while guiding a trophy hunt last week. Offered to the client who declined. Amazing animal and have seen a number of white animals but she is awesome.
I just bought a Zastava 458 at my local to use as a loan rifle. It feeds very nicely and is comfortable enough to shoot. I would say they are huge bargain.
When guiding in Oz I use a 1907 Jeffery 404 which was built on an ex mil action. I like to do a lot of belly crawling pushing the gun ahead of me and get real close. That action can have boulders and logs in it and still cycle and that is why I use it.
Mr 16 Gauge, you were made to learn Australian History because eventually we will rule the world. I have a biography of Cecil Rhodes I have read a few times which I think many here would find interesting.
Another interesting discussion so here is my two cents worth though I doubt it to be worth so much. My yard stick for the use of a particular weapon has always been if you be would comfortable to use it alone on your chosen quarry then it will be a fair choice for a guided hunt. If you are...
There are cull hunts and there are culls. To me a cull hunt is where you hunt as you would for a trophy animal only the animal taken is of a type that is surplus to requirements for one reason or another or not of a type or standard you want breeding. Your hunting ethics are what they are and...
Will be interesting to see where this one ends up. Hope it comes off though now it is gaining some news coverage I am waiting for the antis to start up. The advantage is crocs are not cute and fuzzy and like to eat people so there shouldn't be as much backlash as there could be.
I have used the Hydros on water buffalo here and am not a huge fan. They did show amazing penetration. On a frontal chest shot they exited to the rear and sailed though both shoulders on side shots. They were loaded in a .404. For mine the woodleigh softs kill quicker and seemed to hit harder...
Regarding the tape for me the differentiation comes in when the tape becomes the puppet master. I have no issue when a guy chases a certain measurement but I take issue when someone forsakes basic ethics to secure it. I see it fairly often where guys use methods that I would not not even...
I had a discussion with my wife last night who is a non hunter, regarding how someone such as herself views hunting. While she doesn't like killing she said she can understand guys going out and hunting for a special trophy, completely understands meat hunting and can see that hunting aids...
Tough situation. I have to admit that when guiding quite often the economics can over ride my own ethics. I can accept that some folks have differing views to mine regarding how the hunt is conducted and accept that but I like to think the one not negotiable is the welfare of the animal which I...
