The 75% rule is "75% of the weight of the regulated load IE 500grns, with a full powder charge". Another respected shooter says 75% powder charge with a full weight bullet.
I use the full powder charge, light bullet and it works quite well in several doubles.
On RH rifle the front fires the right pipe. On LH rifles it's the left that gets touched off first. You can look at the 'stagger' of the triggers and see this. They are regulated this way and supposedly the regulation isn't as good if the wrong trigger is pulled first. I haven't noticed this...
You can also get Hawk bullets soft point and solid for that beast. Hornady make affordable dies for that beast also.
Lee makes a good single stage press for under $100 that'll handle the longer cartridges.
I've got all of Cal's books and in each one I learn a tid bit or two.
The Kodiaks are a good value for new members of the DR community that don't want to spend a ransom for a rifle. My first was a 9.3X74R that would place them a barrels width apart at 50 yds. It was barrel heavy but deadly with iron sights. It's since migrated to Fla. to another member of here...
There were 2 Hollis's making firearms. A. Hollis and I. Hollis. The A Hollis was a retailer and didn't make them. Most were made by Leonard the same maker as many Jeffries IIRC. I Hollis was a maker and also branded the guns for other retailers.
I've got a "Best" 500/450 Magnum branded A...
The very early ones had twin sights. Not for many years though. They are fairly well set by jigs.
I have one with 12 ga barrels also. It's a factory oddity.
Somewhere I have pictures of me holding just this set up. A Boddington 450 NE #1 with a 458' rechambered top a 450 NE. Lot'sa duct tape was used for this home brewed double.
I'd go for either the 450/400 or the 450 NE. Mr. Brown knows what he's talking about. Keep it low and slow for doubles.
You'll probably need to reverse engineer a set of plans for a boxlock. I'd go with a JP Sauer in 16 ga for the 450/400 and a 12 ga for the 450. ( I happen to have had one...
I use 95 grains of IMR 4831 for my loads with a 480 grn bullet. I don't know what your powder is and would not want to guess.
I'd start 10% under and work up "IF" that is the right conversion.
For hunting in your area why not start simply like with a Biakal 30-06? Some trigger work and maybe some stock re shaping will be needed but you'll be into it less than a grand.
Gunbroker, GunsInternational, and GunAuction are good places to look on the web.
Edit to add: Cal and I posted...
There's no need to turn down a used rifle. Just make sure that you get a 3-5 day inspection period that allows shooting it. Factory fodder of course or better yet shoot it with the owner and you'll probably make a new friend that's a big bore fan.
I would like to know the tiny numbers stamped at the forearm hanger. That's where Leonard stamped his numbers. That's the only way to tie it to the Leonard I have.
Thanks.
I doubt that any maker used the same size bushings or spanners. Some spanners have a swing arm to fit many sizes and they're easy to make. But not in the field obviously.
This was with Omni Bob's single shot. Good pin strike but a dead primer. It might of been another of the new guys? It doesn't matter really.
The point of the shoot was good times with good guys! That went off just fine.
Most of these are English rifles and as far as I know none were set up with automatics if they are in DG calibers. Even if they were it's simple to de-activate it. I wouldn't go out in the bushes with automatics.
Hmmmm, I thought it was you that found a dead primer with the 4 singler of Rob's. Dennis maybe?
Newer DR's might have the auto safety from the factory but most have been disconnected afterwards. Can you imagine needing that shot badly and quickly then finding it was on? Ouch.
I don't know if you shot the Alex Henry 577/500 first or the T Turner #2 first. They're both great little rifles.
I will bet dollars to donuts that the 600 doesn't have a auto safety. NO dangerous game rifle has them. I bet you thumbed it somehow.
You did flinch a bit when that 4 bore single...
You guys should have seen the silly grin he was wearing most of the time here. (y)
The big bore rifles were down loaded to a tolerable level. The 4 bore with a full boogie load will recoil up to a 45 degree level as you're taking a couple of steps backwards. But that's with a 2200 grn conical...
The part I found funny was "SAA will no longer support game hunters". The dumb shit doesn't know just who butters his bread.
Hunters support SAA not the other way around.
It’s a leap in the right direction and conservationists have hailed SAA as a beacon of action among major corporations.
Our local carrier and the largest in Africa has put a total block on hunting trophies, meaning whatever wealthy foreigners come to shoot here won’t be going home with them...
The next step if the above doesn't work is to bring the target to 25 yds and try to get it on paper.
Since this is your first scope, I've got to ask, did you install it yourself or someone else?
