Crazy "Gun Case" question related to travel to JNB

I flew Emirates when I hunted Namibia in 2016 and they were amazing with how they handled my rifle and ammunition. In fact, the agent at Emirates in Seattle was more helpful and insightful than the customs agent that double checked my paperwork. I'll definitely be flying Emirates again in...

Your hunt for a No 1 in 458 Lott is on par with mine for a uncut/unmodified 257 Roberts in a No 1 so I feel for you.

    Hello All from AK... Again!

Uhhh... I am a former Marine so "Sarge" is not in my vocabulary!! I think I'm going to focus mostly on the plains game that I didn't harvest in Namibia (Duiker, Impala, Springbuck, Steenbuck, Blesbuck, Red Hartebeest, Blue Wildebeest). As for the CSM, he's been traveling/snowbirding, so we...

Haha! I need to dust off my diary from the last hunt and do a post. I cannot say enough good things about my guides, trackers and hosts at Schoenfeld. Scott

    Hello All from AK... Again!

Thank you! It was good to catch up on everyone's experiences and photos. Yes, it will be great to go to Africa with the CSM (My dad is a retired Army Command Sergeants Major so it's the title I still use... Haha, I know he secretly likes it!). He's 77 and has been to the Congo and a couple of...

    Hello All from AK... Again!

Hola! It's been a while since I've been on here (changes in life and whatnot) but I do enjoy the great discussions and sharing hunt info from the time that I was on here last. It was great to meet up with several members and talk up Africa and other hunts (It's good to see Velo Dog still...

    9.3 Nosler Accubonds

Well... Being in Alaska, the magnum round is pretty much the standard for most hunting. I used a 338 (Ruger No.1) for years but now my usual go to is a No.1 in 9.3x74R and have been successful on the one shot drops from black bears to moose. It's also my Africa rifle in which I had no issues...

    Ruger Number one

Wayne, I highly recommend the 9.3x74R for African game. I had amazing performance with mine on my recent hunt in Namibia and I'll have to say that I was pleasantly surprised as I had never used that caliber nor had I used that particular rifle on a hunt before. Needless to say, I love it and...

    Ruger Number one

Well, Wayne, like anything, it's about personal preference. I've had many rifles over the years and can say that at one time or another that I have loved each and every one. There's just something about the No 1 that holds my heart though I have strayed many times to military rifles or bolt...

    Ruger Number one

I own 13 No 1s in various calibers and shoot 3 on a regular basis (270, 338, 9.3). I had no issues with a model 1 in 9.3x74 on my hunt in Namibia this last summer. I took 11 animals and shot 11 times (not including my 3 sighting rounds upon arrival). I will say, it is a conversation starter...

    Ruger No.1 9.3 x 74r With Extras

I have the same rifle but with a Nikon and it performed flawlessly on my Namibian hunt in which I took 11 animals and shot 11 rounds (outside of my 3 sighter rounds). I was using Hornady 250 gr GMX and Hornady 300 gr solids and had no issues dropping animals. It's an awesome rifle and a real...

Importation or Transiting Procedures Through Countries with Weapons & Ammunition

Wow! I had awesome service with Emirates. My only complaint was that Alaska Air had said that my rifle could be checked through to Windhoek but I had a gut feeling it would be held up in Seattle. Sure enough, I checked with the gate agent first thing and he told me that I would have to go to the...

    Clothing, boots recommendations?

I'm with Bill, whatever you are comfortable wearing that fits the local color scheme of the environment. Being a former grunt, make sure your boots are broke in before you go. Nothing will ruin a trip of a lifetime if you have to deal with blisters and cannot walk.

NAMIBIA: Has Anyone hunted With Schoenfeld Safaris In Namibia?

So, I ran through a couple of dozen outfitters and guides at the SCI convention and narrowed it down to a couple but the guy who impressed me the most was Stephan from Schoenfeld Safaris in Namibia. He was very passionate about his country, his family and his profession. It struck me in a good...

    Ruger no.1 range report

Unfortunately I have a serious No.1 addiction... I have ones in .270, .338, 450/400,9.3x74r, .458 Win Mag, .416 Rigby, .416 Ruger. Something about the single shot that brings up memories of hunting with the old man. Yes, the wood on a the .270 is a lot to be desired but the .458 has a custom...

Ruger #1 in big bore calibers

I have several No.1s in various calibers (my .338 is a sweetheart to shoot and the .270 is a tack driver) and love them but they do have their peculiarities (heavy recoil and sometimes adjusting that pesky forearm).
