COVID-19 Coronavirus UPDATES, BANS, CLOSURES, ADVISORY, etc.

How can the CDC have test kits available for a virus strain that we didn't know existed until a few months ago? They didn't get caught unprepared. On the contrary, the CDC is moving faster and more efficiently than it ever has in history. The genome sequence of the virus was completely mapped...

    Montana Rifle Company closed!

Sorry if this is a duplicate post, I haven't seen a similar post yet. I went to help order a rifle for a friend (a stainless 375 H&H), and noticed the website is down. Upon further search, I found this; https://montanarifleco.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/MRC-Closure-Letter.pdf So, Ruger...

Is the CZ 550 Gone or Not?

They probably got sick of doing the constant warranty work on the 550. All of my 550's were sent back to the factory (and eventually ended up at AHR). Someone mentioned that the tooling was old and very worn out, and I believe that after looking at the last couple 550's I bought. I think the 550...

    Disgrunted with Nosler Ammunition

What Chrono are you using? I was a competition shooter for many years. When I would mentor guys just getting started, I always found they were constantly chasing ES and SD issues with their loads, and getting way over-OCD with loading practices as a result. I would say that 75% of the time...

Ammunition Test - Hornady DGX Bonded VS Swift A-frame

It may take a while for Hornady to fix their DGX reputation. I talked to several PHs last year while planning this year's trip to Zambia and Zimbabwe. One of the PHs said "please don't bring Hornady, we have seen lots of issues with those bullets". Another PH asked me what I was bringing and was...

What would have been available for scopes in African gun shops in the 1960s and 1970s?

Is there an African animal you wouldn't shoot?

I have no desire to hunt cats in Africa; not because I am against it, but because I hate hunting from a blind over bait. 90% of the positive experience I get from hunting comes from fair chase stalking on foot. Even when I hunt bear here in the states, I won't do it over bait. I also don't...

How would you rate the 6.8 SPC on Plains game and "small" African game?

I'm definitely not one of those Weatherby "nut-swingers" that think velocity trumps all; but the 6.8 SPC with 130gr bullets is severely lacking in it for medium size and large game IMO; so much so that most monolithic bullets probably wouldn't even open at 200 yards. If I did hunt with 6.8spc...

To Camo or not to Camo

Camo is only necessary for bird hunting. Birds have amazing vision. Deer, antelopes, and hogs do not have great vision. I just shot a deer at 30 yards while wearing shorts and a tank top. Keeping the wind in your face and staying quiet are 100 times more important than clothing.

Yea, Barnes load data SUCKS! Its been known for years, they probably just filled in much of the 308 info in the 30-06 category. I have been loading Barnes bullets for 20 years now, and none of my loads are representative of Barnes numbers. My 150gr TTSX load for 30-06 with H4350 has a MV of...

    Cz 550 Safari classic frustration

Both of my 550s were turds that had to be fixed by AHR. My 550 Chambered in 416 went back to CZ twice, and returned with the same feeding issues. Not to mention, both rifles were so rough, they looked like they came out of an makeshift Indian forge. In retrospect, the newer FN-made Model 70...

    Ruger No. 1 Upgrades

Like already stated; change the recoil pad. I went with a limbsaver. The action and stock design make the N0.1 a pretty heavy kicker compared to a M70 or CZ550 chambered for the same cartridge.

    Remington 700 BDL Questions

OK, lets keep it real here. The Model 700 WAS NOT dependable, and the USMC started building their own. What the military uses is absolutely nothing like a factory R700 in any way. The military buys BARE receivers from Remington. The armorers bead blast the bare receiver, add a...

Unless you are a skilled reloader; then the difference is significant enough to matter * I can easily get 200+ fps more from the 30-06 for any given bullet, which is indeed helpful, especially when you are using monolithic bullets like Barnes that I want to keep about 1800fps at impact and...

Your interpretation from WDM Bell's Article in The American Rifleman

Definitely true. Also put into perspective the fact that Taylor had no internet, digital media, or even access to most of the writings of other hunters to utilize for research. Most libraries didn't even have microform media to research in his day. He was mainly going by word of mouth and...

    Magnaport

    Need a new Bullet

The TSX totally eliminated the need for me to load softs and solids separately. For me, one bullet does it all (penetrates deep, 100% weight retention, but still expands). Good read. I have been following Brian Litz's velocity tests for many years. Basically, your standard chrony's are the least accurate; with most of the cheap chronys being highly inaccurate. .308 Win or .30.06? Which caliber has the nose in front in your country?

Hunters that reload LOVE the 30-06 (probably the perfect round for a reloader). If you buy factory ammo, it really doesn't matter. In the western United States, I probably see 5 times more 30-06 rifles in the field than I do 308s. Most of the guys I see with the 308s tend to be the ones I see...
