Probable new No. 1 EA bohor reedbuck with KOS Safaris Uganda

Sometimes things just work out. My recent trip to Cameroon was not one of them. However, as I was in route, I got a WhatsApp message from my good friends at KOS Safari’s in Uganda of a hunt cancellation. Tags just became available for a Sudanese Roan, a Chandler’s Mountain Reedbuck, and an East...

Any minimum calibers for the largest of plains game?

No minimums that I am aware off. I use ‘whatever’ since I am typically borrowing guns at this point, but most commonly I am shooting a 375H&H for all variety of PH. If, stress if, I am doing something very specific, such as Vaal Rhebuck on the open slopes of the mountains, I’ll take a ‘for...

Hippo on land Vs. Buffalo for first Dangerous Game hunt?

I’ve been fortunate enough to hunt Cape Buffalo several times, and dry land hippo a couple of times as well. I would recommend a Buffalo hunt for the 1st time Dangerous Game hunting. That said, like @Hunter-Habib I have hunted hippo at night in the sugar cane. Of the hunts I have done, hippo...

How should I choose my Safari Hunting Outfitter? First time Hunting in South(ern) Africa

All good advice above. Start there. There are a lot of people on here that hunt Africa often. It’s a great resource. If you have specific questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to them. I’ve found the community to be very helpful. The more specific and focused you are, the easier it will be...

    Opinions please: Pros/Cons of .375 Ruger vs .375 H&H

They are both excellent calibers. So I would lean heavily into the advice of the guys that have been there and done it many times over (including especially the PHs advice) and go 375H&H for a true hunting gun. Stuff happens, it just does. I’ve shot Cape Buffalo and elephant with ‘loaner’...

Age of first African hunting trip

I was 39. Decided to hunt “the Bug 5” before I turned 40. Shot all five that first year on 2 separate trips. Started taking my kids when the were 9 or 10. All 5 of them have hunted Africa, 3 of them before they were 10. You will love it, it’s addicting. You won’t go just once. Enjoy yourself.

CAMEROON: Another Great Hunt With Alan Vincent - Lord Derby Eland This Time

Congratulations. Great LDR, and awesome kob! I’m leaving Brussels tomorrow morning 3 March to hunt the same areas for some PG (bushbuck, waterbuck, hartebeest, kob, etc.). Looking forward to it.

I will be going to Africa!!!

Congratulations and enjoy yourself. You'll always remember that first trip that started it all. If I searched, I am sure my first trip planning questions are on this forum somewhere. As others have mentioned, beware of the "no ones goes to Africa just once..." warnings. They are real. I was...

    Simple question, complicated answer perhaps?

Like others, I married my international hunting partner. But then - we had five (5) kids together, and now I have 6 hunting "partners." However, "partner" suggests something like equal contribution to the effort. In my case, none of my hunting partners seem to have much money. Or any money. In...

    Preparing for 1st Safari

Like any other hunt, the better shape you are in, the more you will enjoy yourself. Buts that's also just good general advice. The Limpopo region is pretty easy from a physical standpoint. A great area, but its not physically challenging. They can actually make the hunt work for anyone. Don't...

Age to Start Kids Hunting in Africa

Thanks AH Community - I had long ago forgotten about this post and question. I wrote this post in December of 2009 when my youngest of 5 children was only 2 weeks old. As an update, that 2 week old baby shot his first lion 2 years ago at the admittedly young age of 12. I started all of my 5...

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Temporary Firearms Movement Restriction

I'm headed to Mozambique in June. Flying from the U.S. to Jo'Burg. From there, I'm hunting Namibia for a week and then transiting back through JNB to Beria for another week in Mozambique. While I love my guns, they will be staying home. I will hire a rifle from the PHs. I've written on my...

Jet lag- how do you handle if?

Probably too late, but I now plan about 2 nights in Country before my hunt starts to follow the advice of Damonjohnson above and get acclimated. I know we all want to make the most of our time, but i’ve found that I enjoy the hunt more when I’m not dead tired and just trying to get through the...

Who is chasing the spiral horn slam?

Not sure that I am "chasing" a Spiral Slam, but @Scott CWO and @JES Adventures are inspiring me to at least think about it (or they are just bad influences). I've taken quite a few of the spirals already, and I'm looking forward to hunting Harnessed Bush buck in Cameroon in March. I love the...

UGANDA: Uganda With KOS Safaris - This Is My Story

Interesting question. I'd put it at a 5 of 10. The three best ways of getting there, that I found, were: 1) direct into Entebbe from Brussels on KLM (I think); 2) US to Germany on United/Lufthansa, then a Lufthansa flight into Nairobi, then Nairobi into Entebbe; 3) US to Jo'Berg and then into...

UGANDA: Uganda With KOS Safaris - This Is My Story

Sorry Bivy - forgot to answer the rest of your question. I saw Roan and Topi is very good numbers. They have done a good job in managing the species. In addition to good numbers, I saw excellent animal quality. We saw a Roan bull that was so old and impressive that I attempted some field...

Bivy - I appreciate our reading the report so carefully as to pick up on that issue. Thank you. The auction was in January of 2023. Since there season starts/runs from January through late April/May, they were already hurting. I can travel on short notice, so I would have bought the hunt in...

    Auction Hunt in Africa?

I am a fan of the auction hunts at the major shows. I have done a few, though I no longer bid on the South African hunts. Those are the ones that are usually sold at very steep discounts. The only reason I don't bid on those hunts is that I have an good relationship with an outfitter in RSA that...

UGANDA: Uganda With KOS Safaris - This Is My Story

Well, it all started (as it often does) at Dallas Safari Club. “What should we do this year?” I asked my lovely wife. “I think we should find an operator suffering from malaria, briefly talk to the other guy at his booth, bid on his DSC Auction hunt that we know nothing about, and then go to...

Non Trophy Elephant Bull Hunt Zimbabwe

I’ve also hunted “non-trophy” bulls with Mbalabala. Twice actually. It’s a great hunt. I’ve seen some very nice bulls. Everything Lin described above is what he delivered. Mbalabala Safari has been around for a long time in Zimbabwe, starting with his father Charley Stanton. Lin does a great...

Feel free to DM me to discuss. I’ve also done a lot of research on this, and learned some very good stuff along the way. Happy to share. Safari Season 2024 Has Started - Where We Going?

I I started with the Grand Slam Club Ovis Capra World Slam, which is 12 capra species from around the world. Finished that plus a few extra, last year, with a combination of chamy, Inex and tahr. As part of that, I hunted 5 different chamois species, in Spain, France, N Macedonia, Slovenia...

Safari Season 2024 Has Started - Where We Going?

Safari Season 2024 Has Started - Where We Going?

Love the Zambezi Valley. Hunted the middle Zambezi Valley and the Makuti Concession at the east end of the lake with Lin Stanton a few times in recent years. Great areas, and some good old bulls on the east end. I would love to come over and fish the tournament on Kariba. Lin has told me some...

Safari Season 2024 Has Started - Where We Going?

The 2024 hunting/safari season has started. I am currently sitting in a hotel in Nairobi, Kenya on a stopover to the Karamoja region of Uganda (I know, I should be at the Stanley Hotel for pure nostalgia reasons, but the flight landed late and it’s not close to airport). I left the house on...

    Game List

The SCI World Hunting Awards, Animals of Africa category, recognizes 177 hunts or so huntable species without including the Zebra species, or giraffe species (I don’t know why). Some of those species are admittedly in places you may not be able to hunt anymore, and some places you can hunt are...

I always ask what the PH needs

I am headed to Uganda next week, and I have uncharacteristically started packing early. It gave me the idea to share some advice I received about 10 years ago from a real safari veteran – ask what they need, not what you need. Particularly if you are coming from the U.S. My normal gear now...

Curious why cape buffalo have the same minimum caliber requirement as Rhino, Hippo and Elephant?

Use Enough Gun explains it pretty well. The "minimum" does not exist because its the minimum required to actually kill the animal in question, it exists to minimize wounded and therefore more dangerous game. Walter Bell shot countless elephants with a 275 Rigby (among other small calibers)...

What happens with rifles when staying in a big 5 tented camp and a self defense question

You will love DG hunting, and the PHs are a different breed. Few years ago I was in a camp on the Zambezi with Mbalabala. Everything was winding down for the first evening and I had the last tented machan on the path away from camp. As I was walking into the dark Lin said “hey there’s an old...

Bull Elephant Hunting Calibers. What Rifle Would You Choose?

470NE double. But I like and shoot them well. My son made a one-shit kill with a 375H&H in 2022 and the 458 Lott is a great cartridge, I’ve used my 458 Lott on hippo, croc and Buffalo. Use the guns that you shoot very well and enjoy yourself. Elephant hunting is a special hunt.

? For Those Of You Who've Killed Crocs With A Gun

These are always interesting discussions. I’ve shot a few crocs. When it goes exactly as planned, it can seem uneventful. Problem with crocs is, when it goes wrong, it becomes very eventful. Very quickly. I think I did a post/story on AH about a year ago about a croc hunt (Dumbora and Bad...

    Hornady DGS for Elephant

I’ve shot four (4) ele’s with DGS’ in 470 NE. One frontal brain, 1 quartering away brain (the Bell shot), and 2 heart shot double-taps. Recovered the bullets every time. They worked well. If they didn’t, recovering the bullets would have been much harder. We are not talking about using Cordite...
