    Your most valued African trophy

I have been away and apparently missing out. Great post. My most valued trophy, the klipspringer, was an unexpected one. Everything from the adventures of getting to the area, making our way on a nice hike, enjoying the sunrise, enjoying the beautiful habitat, the first glimpse, getting the...

    Rhino Poachers

It was an interesting experience with some dedicated conservationists. They have done some hard conservation work in the past, even if it meant being initially misinterpreted. They had little or no tactical experience but certainly showed outdoorsmanship and dedication. People with various...

    Rhino Poachers

Unfortunately, the research by anti's doesn't extend this far into the problem. Good thing that hunting dollars can still help other areas. The thought of hunters protecting wildlife is unpalatable and unacceptable to the uninformed. The majority of the fight may have to be fought through...

Interesting idea and business opportunity although it does seem to perpetuate a few negative connotations towards contractors. I'm no marketing genius, though.

Another 45-70 for Dangerous Game Question

I still haven't seen those Garretts perform but I've found that I like the way this rifle handles. This may be coming with me(iron sights) for the next trip.

SOUTH AFRICA: Has Anyone Hunted With Authentic African Adventures?

Great idea, bluey! I would market for these guys anytime. The fact that my girlfriend enjoyed a hunting vacation, in Africa, is just short of a miracle.

Thank you. It looks like soft is preferred. Kyne Edwards was my PH. He did a great job.

SOUTH AFRICA: Hunting With Authentic African Adventures

Thanks guys, I'm happy to post pics and hold up my end of the deal. AH and all members helped with the planning and prep of a great trip. Thank you to Lori at Travel Express! She got us squared away with the travel details. Everything went smoothly. Zimbabwe was also beautiful!

My PH was Kyne Edwards. They have a winning team over there. Good luck with that buffalo!

Inherent Risk, Field Care and Rescue

My recent trip also highlighted something that should be noted for all travel. Become familiar with weapon systems that may be popular at your destination. Examples for SA might be the FN FAL, Mamba, and the ubiquitous Glock. Know what they are and how to manipulate them in an emergency.

    Rhino Poachers

Looks like this is more common than I expected. I was surprised at how patient and relentless these guys were. They new we were aware of their presence and persisted(on following nights) even after a night of being actively pursued. They showed some skill in nighttime movement. One sloppy moment...

SOUTH AFRICA: Hunting With Authentic African Adventures

James, I was able to look at quite a few. I was actually looking for a different one that was seen the previous day. This guy was probably one of the sets of eyes seen occasionally surface but had no real idea of how big he was. I got lucky and caught him basking. Nice bushbuck! I saw a few...

SOUTH AFRICA: Hunting With Authentic African Adventures

Thank you all for the congrats and compliments! I can't wait for the klippie to get back to me. I will post a pic of the mount in a year or so. The croc was hunted right next to the Limpopo river. I forget the name of the area (still working on my Afrikaans). He measured at 10'8". My PH was...

SOUTH AFRICA: Hunting With Authentic African Adventures

Thanks! That zebra took days of sorting through herds and cancelled stalks. He was worth the wait! What a strong animal. The klipspringer was my favorite hunt right next to the croc. I love the mountains in SA. And the wildebeest. Man, they're tough too. Come to think of it, everything was tough...

What are Steenbok and Duiker like to stalk?

I was able to get within thirty yards of a few steenbuck. Still not close enough and they were not relaxed enough for my slower arrows. The Duiker that I saw were almost always running by the time I saw them. I am now hooked on the smaller antelope. You should be in for a great time.

SOUTH AFRICA: Hunting With Authentic African Adventures

Authentic African Adventures in the Limpopo Province of SA provided outstanding hunting and non-hunting experiences. The staff was skilled and friendly. The accomodations were very nice and comfortable. It was altogether a family like atmosphere. The hunting conditions and environment were...

SOUTH AFRICA: Has Anyone Hunted With Authentic African Adventures?

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay with Hanno and his crew at AAA. They were able to give me the type of hunting that I was looking for and also catered to my girlfriend who is a non-hunter. The staff is very friendly and good at what they do. The accomodations were beautiful and far exceed what I...

    Rhino Poachers

During my recent trip to Africa, some rhinos(no hunt animals) were targeted by poachers in SA. I will not get into specifics but the rhinos were protected and the poachers were repelled for over a week. The response to the poachers was immediate and significant. The tracking skill that I...

    Crocodile Hunt in Limpopo

A word about shot placement and bullets. I trust that my taxidermist will repair the skull but the damage may have been mitigated with the use of a solid. The bullet entered at the top of the smile(right side), broke the maxilla, and caused considerable damage between the horns. It appears that...

    Crocodile Hunt in Limpopo

Thanks, enysse! My PH was sure to be clear on shot placement with an old croc skull and we worked it out at the range. The .308 trajectory was working for me and I was familiar with the system. It also pays to be lucky. I will definitely be returning with the bow. I passed on a nice kudu that I...

Immediately after the shots. Notice how much the posture changed by the time photos were taken later. He was stoned with the first shot but still had that reptilian habit of muscle contraction even when we got back to the shed.

    Crocodile Hunt in Limpopo

Wow! AH has changed since I left. I will post here since it seems appropriate and I need a little more time to familiarize myself with the new site. The new AH is looking good! The hunt was a learning experience to say the least and I am still reeling. The hunts all changed as I was able to...

It appears that I have harvested all available information for the moment. It is now time to get down to the business of final prep. Fritz Rabe also recommends the lung shot if not using a float. Like Steve, he doesn't seem to be active on AH anymore. I could be wrong, but it appears that he may no longer be affiliated with Askari Adventures. He hunted with Pieter but don't know his last name. Anybody acquainted with these...

    Crocodile Hunt in Limpopo

I sent an email to Steve Kobrine as he may just not follow AH anymore. Maybe there is some additional trick to help ensure recovery after the lung shot. Standing by for info. Is anybody here acquainted with him or spoken with him about his croc hunting tactics?

Smart. We don't get into the disagreement phase. I just present my proposals as she holds majority share in the decorating department. It certainly would be more affordable. That croc skin expense could go towards plains game.

    Crocodile Hunt in Limpopo

Moz would be a fantastic trip. I hope that gets ironed out soon. I'm not sure what the current status is for crocs in Ethiopia, but that would be one to remember as well. The recent hooplah about lion hunting, and their possible listing, is what got me really thinking about going for one this...

    Crocodile Hunt in Limpopo

I had thoughts of a lioness this time around but your conversation at home obviously didn't go down the way mine did! My girlfriend believes in the lion hunting and conservation model as long as it doesn't include me! I will live vicariously through your report.

    Crocodile Hunt in Limpopo

Haha! Don't wanna cheat just yet! I am confident that I can close the distance(as long as the wind doesn't change after taking an hour to move every 10 or 20 yards!). It's the clearing of the limbs and draw that I has me wondering but will give it a shot. I will repeat that process day after...

    Crocodile Hunt in Limpopo

Thanks, guys. Enysse and Bluey, you both have me reconsidering the lung shot tactic. I sent a PM to Steve asking for further info. I recalled that he hadn't posted much and it looks like he is still busy with other matters. Current conditions lead me to think that it is not worth betting...

    Crocodile Hunt in Limpopo

Sorry, bluey. I lost track. My phone limits overall view of the page. I was considering a poll but it doesn't seem like there are many who even think of bowhunting crocs. The panic response sounds like a strong possibility but animals surprise me and I have no experience with crocs. Your...

Definitely not my cup of tea. I would rather go rifle and look for a larger croc at a riverbank or large lake.
  43. R

    Crocodile Hunt in Limpopo

I suspect that the heart shot would kill a little more quickly but not be a deciding factor on its own. Maybe more comfort when recovering it after a long wait. I consider lungs because of previous considerations and also because they are a larger target. I don't think that a croc would...

    Crocodile Hunt in Limpopo

Your take on drowning/ respiratory distress makes sense to me. It sure as heck holds true for humans. I don't know enough about crocs and their awareness of that kind of problem. Maybe a heart shot near very shallow water is the best option. I have a feeling that there will be several meetings...
  45. R

    Crocodile Hunt in Limpopo

My PH will only allow it under conditions that will assist with recovery. It was made pretty clear that I may have to use a rifle. It is my wishful thinking that the right conditions will exist. The flooding may have already made the decision for me. Hopefully water levels drop to an acceptable...
  46. R

    Crocodile Hunt in Limpopo

It is probably very unlikely that I would stone a croc with an arrow. Maybe with a spinal neck shot. The conditions would have to be very favorable for me to take that shot. I will also only bowhunt in areas with shallow bodies of water. This will probably limit me from getting a very large...

    Crocodile Hunt in Limpopo

Yeah, I trust that he knows his stuff. Almost guaranteed to slip into the water. I want to try the lung shot causing the croc to eventually return to land. Steve, from other thread, suggests avoiding the heart as it will likely kill the croc while still submerged. My PH is willing to give that a go.
  48. R

    Crocodile Hunt in Limpopo

My PH said he would like giving that a shot, but I want to keep it simple.
  49. R

    Crocodile Hunt in Limpopo

The rains are adding a twist and challenge. I'm still thinking lung shot with an arrow. Reptiles, especially big ones, sure are resilient.
