    Hodgdon H4350

I use H4350 in a 30-06 with 165 grain bullets and in a 6.5 Creedmoor with 140 grain bullets. The worst thing about H4350 now is the price. I paid almost $50.00 a pound last fall and I think the price is around $60.00 a pound now.

    >35 Whelen versus. 338 Win Mag TKO values (modified)

Interesting numbers. I don’t really have a dog in the fight either as I own and like both calibers and their cousin, the 338-06. It appears these calculations were done for muzzle velocity, it would be interesting to see the same calculations done from 100 to 500 yards at 100 yard intervals...

Problem with ruger M77 RLS in 270

Glad you found the problem. If soaking doesn’t work you’ll need to take the ejector and spring out and clean it good. You carefully drive the pin out and keep your hand in front of the bolt face to catch the parts. Putting it back together it helps to have 3 hands to hold the ejector in...

Problem with ruger M77 RLS in 270

I’ve been following along and can see why you’re frustrated. That’s a real nice rifle in a great caliber. I bought a Ruger 77 in 1997 and still have it. I just got it out of the gun safe to look at itit. Seems to me that if the bolt functions ok and the safety works ok,without a cartridge...

    CRF vs Push feed

Ive got a couple of Swedish Mausers and when shooting from a bench I’ll lay the stripper clips on the left of the rifle and charge with my left hand. Maybe I don’t do it correctly but that’s on me I guess. The Swedish 96 was the first Mauser with the thumb cut. Maybe the larger thumb cut...

    How hard is too hard?!?!

I just picked up a 300 Winchester. It came with Leupold rings so mounted a Leopold 3-9x scope and sighted it in, Groups seemed to string vertically, shooter error? Loaded more ammo and went back the next week, same thing except kept shooting higher. I also shot a 30-06 to test my...

    CRF vs Push feed

I believe the cutout in the Mauser receiver was to facilitate loading via stripper clips and the follower blocking the bolt was to let the soldier know his rifle was empty in the confusion during the heat of the battle. German thoughts in designing a battle rifle.

Thanks for sharing your story. I’ve reloaded almost everything I shoot since 1977. I load for 21 different rifle calibers and 7 different pistol calibers. I enjoy reloading but with the powder shortage I end up with too many different powders, the packaging changes and the burn rates...

    Offhand vs. Sticks

I have used the Primos Steady Stix for at least 30 years. I think they were called something else before Primos bought them. They are aluminum so they only weigh a few ounces. They are 36” when extended but they are 3 sections held together by a shock cord so they fold up to 12”s. you just...

    .270 vs .280

If I remember right Nosler makes 160 grain semi spitzer in 270 that will stabilize in a 1/10 twist barrel. That should be a thumper at reasonable hunting ranges . I’ve used 175 grain round nosed bullets in the 280 for pig hunting. Hit hard but not real fast. I think 140 to 150 grain bullets...

    Large rifle primer availability

I think the demand has been for 9mm and 556 so the manufacturers focus has been on small rifle and pistol primers. I was able to get 200 (all they would sell) large rifle magnum (federal) primers recently from a local gun shop for $12.00 per hundred. I hope I can make them last until the...

I have a 3x9 and a 2x7 with that reticle. You can go to the Burris website, go to their ballistic tools and pull up a screen that you can select your scopes reticle and enter your ballistic dope and print out a dope card. I have this taped to my rifle. I’ve reduced the size when I printed it...

Can we please stop talking about "flat shooting" cartridges

i Had a good friend that i shot with and made several hunts with that hated the 243 as much or more than Bob. He was to the point that he wouldn’t even say 243, but would call it “that unmentionable rifle” or the “great crippler of western game”. He did some guiding in his earlier years and...

Scope mount for a Type 38 Arisaka: history?

It looks like, or is very similar to a BSquare mount. They made several mounts that attached to military rifles allowing a scope to be added. They usually fit in the rear sight holes.

6.5X55 Swedish Mauser 1923 Vasteras sight : Info needed please members??

Could be the sight change was driven by a change in the ammo. They went from a 156 grain round nose bullet to a 140 grain spritzer around 1941. The brass plate on the stock is supposed to show what ammo the sights are regulated for but I’m not sure how to read the ammo part. I know the...

6.5X55 Swedish Mauser 1923 Vasteras sight : Info needed please members??

It’s my understanding that these sights were installed when model 96 Swedes were converted to the Model 96/38s. Model 96s had their barrels shortened and I think the ammo was changed requiring a different sight. The bolt handles weren’t bent when they converted the 96s so the 96/38 has a...

    How Strong Is It?

Thanks for all the information. I have attached a couple of pictures. The rifle has been rebarreled with a lightweight 24 inch barrel. There are no markings on the barrel other than the cartridge. The receiver ring has some stamps but I’m not sure if they’re proof marks.

    How Strong Is It?

Thanks for the information. i Bought this several years ago because I’d always wanted a 7x57. I thought I was buying a 98 Mauser in 7x57 but I didn’t realize is was a small ring until I was cleaning it and my 35 Whelen built on a FN Mauser action at the same time and noticed the difference...

    How Strong Is It?

I have a rifle built on a Kar98 action that is a small ring 98 Mauser action with a large shank barrel. The rifle is chambered in 7x57 and is barreled with a light weight barrel with a contour similar to the Winchester featherweight barrel. I’m loading 139 grain Hornady bullets with 47...

300 wm heavy bullet or switch up to 338 wm?

Both great calibers so you can’t make a bad choice. BCs are better on the heavier 30 cal bullets but velocities go down as you go above 200 grains. The 338 has more frontal area and hits real hard with 225s and 250s. To get to your question, if I felt I needed heavier bullets I go with the...

35 Whelen with 250 gr Norma Oryx

I have a 35 Whelen built on an FN Mauser with a 25” Douglas barrel. I was using 53 grains of Varget and 250gr Hornady bullets. I never chronographed this load but assumed it was 2400 to 2450fps. I shot a few pigs with this within 150 yards as a medium range thumper. It worked well and I...

    Re-Barrel a .30-06 to ??

I’m almost afraid to mention it, but with the good supply of 6.5 bullets on the market the 6.5-06 would be a good long range mule deer round. High bc bullets at decent speeds - almost 264 Win Mag ballistics with a ready supply of 30-06 brass to reform.

Hunting distances- how far is too far?

It’s been mentioned but with ballistic programs and target turrets on rifles, elevation at long distance isnt hard to deal with. Wind at longer distances is the real wild card. Ballistic programs give you a hold off for a specified wind speed but judging wind speed is more art and experience...

    M1917 Enfield Rifle Project

The history of the 1917 Enfield is quite interesting. It’s kinda like the poor bastard red headed stepchild of the rifle world. Produced for WW 1 because the US didn’t have enough 03 Springfields but Remington was producing Pattern 14s in 303 for the Brits. Remington felt they could quickly...

    Mauser ID?

Looks like a 1895 Chilean Mauser Action. It has the extra ”safety“ notch that the bolt handle can lock in when the bolt is closed. Looks like great wood and engraving, overall a very nice custom rifle. Originally in 7x57, but could have been rebarreled because it doesn’t have the stepped...
