    web site names

There were two major companies that merged. For the resulting company, they chose the name of JPT. In most of the world that worked fine, however in French-speaking countries it was a bit of a problem. You see, in French JPT sounds like "J'ai p" Translation: "I farted." They changed the...

Thanks. I found a case that is exactly what I need. It was in the back of my mind (since I have about 6 months till my hunt) but this thread reminded me to deal with it sooner than later, so double thanks.

    I hate accountants (venting)

In all the hunts I've been on, I have only run into one hunter who was a lawyer - or at least, only one who admitted to being a lawyer. Why? Do people with guns make them nervous?

I'm not trying to "sell" brakes as a solution, just sharing what I can from my limited knowledge/experience. That's one of the things that makes this site great.

    Question about the "muzzle brakes"

I love muzzle brakes. They help me to be a better shooter. However, I am not shielded from the muzzle blast by any stretch of the imagination. I may not get it as bad as people to the side, but I do get it. I always use ear protection what shooting - esp with a brake. That is always except...

    Hello from Alaska

Say Man, Welcome to AH - you'll find folks who have a lot of experience in African hunting. They'll have the answers you need. If they don't have the answers, you must not need to know. :) One trip or 2? That's an easy one. The odds say that if you make one trip, you'll make another...

    I hate accountants (venting)

You need a checking account that no one else has access to. That doesn't solve the real problem (incompetence), but is a temporary workaround. I had an accountant who was terrible. Unfortunately, he quit to take another job and denied me the satisfaction of firing him.

    Got my first Facebook Threat

It seems like the local police would be a good starting point. At least they can give you some info. First, they may look at it and say that there's a big difference between saying someone "should be shot" and "will be shot". Or, they may look at it and see it as a threat. Second, if they...

How dangerous is it to hunt a Leopard?

That is amazingly similar to an experience that I had with a mountain lion while elk hunting - except for 2 details. First (and most important), the cat never attacked. I never actually saw it. Second, at first, I didn't realize that I was looking for a cat. I had seen an animal come out of a...

    SCI Auction hunts

All of the points made thus far are valid. I met a guy a couple of years ago who had bought a deer hunt in Canada at a local chapter auction. It turned out to be a total ripoff. When he pursued it with SCI (national) he got absolutely no support. I am personally aware of an Alaskan outfitter...

Inherent Risk, Field Care and Rescue

Yep, but it doesn't have to be very cold for hypothermia to become a problem. They really emphasize that in any survival training here. I also carry a couple of lighters also. However, I've been warned that if you should accidentally drop one in a fire, it can explode with deadly force.

Inherent Risk, Field Care and Rescue

I carry an ACR. The specific model is no longer sold by them. They have lighter weight ones now. About all I can say about it that it gives some peace of mind. However, since I've never actually used it, I can't say any more than that. I think that it's better to pick a unit that relies on...

Cliffy, I have to agree and disagree with you at the same time. I have talked with a lot of reporters in my career. It has generally been a positive experience and I have become friends with several of them. (I have only been misquoted a couple of times.) For the most part, the reporters...

Poll: Are you hunting africa this year?

I agree with that strategy. I always taper my training as the time for a trip approaches. I train hard up to 4-6 weeks before departure. I taper for a "couple" of weeks and then do only very minimal activities for the final 2 weeks.

I seem to have a propensity for convoluted travel routes. This year, I will be flying DEN - IAD - ADD (Addis Ababa) - JNB - KIM (Kimberly, SA). Although I will have only had a 5 1/2 hour layover in Ethiopia, will I need to have a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate to enter South Africa? I...

Hunting Africa - which rifle to take?

Welcome to AH. I concur with all that's been said. Last year, by about the 5th day of my safari, the conversation with my PH turned to guns. He felt very strongly that a 30.06 was not suitable for plains game. He insisted that you need to shoot a magnum caliber. On the other hand, a few...

    Choosing a good hunting outfitter

For what it's worth, I'm in the process of trying to summarize the post so far and will put them up here as soon as I can. Two things that would be helpful are your thoughts on questions to ask a prospective outfitter and questions to ask references.

    Choosing a good hunting outfitter

You're not mistaken. Last year, he did not want any money in advance. I asked several times, but he always politely declined. Finally, he said that if I really wanted to send him some money that it would be OK, but it wasn't necessary. I've never encountered anything like this before. But...

    Choosing a good hunting outfitter

A key to having a great experience is knowing what you want before you book your safari and then being careful to pick an outfitter who is a good fit for your expectations. Choosing a good hunting outfitter

Brickburn, Thanks for the excellent posts. All great points. I agree that in the end, chemistry between the hunter, the outfitter and the PH is important. Trust is an important piece as well. A couple of months ago, I booked a lion hunt with an outfitter that I've hunted with...

Savage Hunter has given some good data. There are some other threads on the subject that have similar data. I'm a simple guy. While i've made my career being very analytical, when it comes to estimating the cost of a hunt, I use a quick formula. I take the price (money paid to the outfitter)...

I hope that this thread doesn't get hijacked into a debate of free range vs. fenced hunts. There is fenced and then there is fenced. Boone & Crockett Club is probably the most particular about what constitutes free range/fair chase. I'm not sure about their position today, but when I took...

    Choosing a good hunting outfitter

Over the years, you must have had someone who didn't get something that they had hoped for, or as big as they would have liked - haven't you? I would put those in the "Bad" bucket. When I check references, I try to probe for anything negative. It's a bit like checking pre-employment...
