Hartmann's Mountain Zebra over Burchell's Plain Zebra which one

Hi everyone,

I'm keen to hunt a zebra when I do my plains game hunt in Namibia next year. Why do people recommend the Hartmann's Mountain Zebra over the Burchell's Plain Zebra, or are they both just as good to hunt.

Not so much recommending one over the other.
Mountain Zebra tend to be a little tougher to hunt than their brothers and certainly the terrain they tend to be hunted in.

They are also native in Namibia and not everyone has them.

You can hunt Burchell's or Plains Zebra in many places. RSA, Botswana, Zambia, Namibia, Zimbabwe, etc.
 
The Hartman hunt - particularly if done in the conservancies vice a high fence farm - is a challenging experience. They are truly a mountain species and you will likely do some real climbing to get one. Shots can also be long and at challenging angles. One of the great free range hunts in Africa.
 
If I was heading to Namibia (and I am) I would focus on the Mountain zebra first. Common zebra are available in many locales but not our friend the beautiful Mountain Zebra.

The only issue is from what ican see is that it can take upto 3-4 days to get the Hartmans zebra. I will be doing a ten day safari chasing kudu, gemsbok, springbuck, warthog, eland and then a zebra.

I have been advised that the eland hunt may take three days, which gets me thinking that I may not have enough time to hunt a Hartmans. See what happens:confused:

Two of the great Namibian hunts. The traditional way to get an eland is to find tracks at a waterhole at dawn and try to walk him down. Very similar to a buffalo hunt. It took me two days and a LOT of miles. One can stumble across them while cruising in the vehicle, but it really will cheat you out of a great hunt. Hartman's are special. If you just want a zebra rug in the minimum time then shoot a Burchell at whatever ranch you will be staying. A Hartman does take effort. And, of course, you will be going back ...... :)

The eland from what I have been told is the traditional way which is what we wanted, all the animals are free range that was the main point of going through this outfitter. I will seriously consider the Hartmans because I like the sound of the challenge.
 
The Hartmann's mountain zebra is a outstanding trophy, one of the great trophy animals of Namibia. A MUST hunt animal.

How many days would you allow for a hartmans zebra, considering I will be chasing kudu, gemsbok, springbok, warthog and eland. Could this all be done on a ten day safari as is all free range hunting.

Not for me to say as I am not aware of so many aspects of your hunt... I would recommend you speaking to your hunting outfitter about this to get a first hand recommendation based on hunting area(s), quantity of game/trophy animals for the species that you are after, quality of game/trophy that you want to take, any priorities that you may have, hunting method(s), time of the year, rifle or bow hunt, shooting ability, 1x1 or 2x1 hunt, physical ability, non-hunting guest(s) joining you on your hunt and his/her/their physical ability...
 
Also its sometimes a mistake to try to allocate a certain number of days to a certain critter. You may get an eland in 2-3 days, you may not. I spent 10 days in Zim in '11 looking for eland and didnt get one, not even a shot! I did take a cow in Zim in '96 after a very interesting stalk in near jungle conditions that lasted some hours. Eland are a tough earned animal. I also hunted them in Namibia for 9 days and no shot there either. They are not a done deal at all, you may get lucky or you may spend 10 days hunting them.
 
Eland can be the devil to hunt on certain properties. They can run like the wind!
 
It is going to be a challenge, but looking forward to it. The main animal for me is the kudu and zebra, the eland is my mates main animal but I would like to experience the hunt aswell. Apparently the animal numbers are very good there at the moment so hope all goes well.
 
I hunted Mountain Zebra with my father in Namibia in 2006. That was a TOUGH hunt. He got a beautiful old stallion and I did not. However, I managed to bag a Plains Zebra in 2012 in Zimbabwe. That hunt was significantly easier than the one for Mountain Zebra.

If it were me, I would go after Mountain Zebra as they are only located in Zimbabwe and are a relatively rare trophy. However, I understand the constraints that you are under with trying to fit all of those animals into one safari.

One other thing to consider is what you plan to do with the hide and just what exactly you are looking for. Keep in mind that most Mountain Zebra do not have "shadow" stripes, but most Plains Zebra do. Personally, I find the Mountain Zebra hide better looking than the hide of a Plains Zebra.
 
As stated above by BGH, a major visual difference are the" shadow stripes". Take a close look at the previously posted pics. I shot a Burchells zebra in Namibia (near Outjo) in 2009. Its a fine rug but pales, literally, when seen next to a stark black/white (ie: no grey) Hartmanns. Interestingly, my wife just killed a Burchells that had a bad hoof in Moz. ( Coutada 9) and it lacks shadow stripes almost altogether. That will be our next rug & we will donate the Burchells rug to our local SCI auction.
 
I am in the same boat. I think I will hunt the mountain zebra a couple of days and then I will spend the next 6days hunting eland. I also want a black wildebeest and a nice warthog. I will settle for a burchells. I hope to do it in a eight day hunt.
 
For sure the Hartmanns, I shot two Sept. 2012 in Namibia near Outjo, one for rug (which I have back) what a great rug, all clients into my showroom comment what a great animal, and one for a Pedestal to match the Burchells.

They have strips down to their hooves, Burchells do not, look at the pattern on their rump and yellow tint in the face, larger ears.

The Eland once on the move rarely stops so shoot straight and often, they take a lot of lead. Are you looking for a run of the mill Eland or one with a dark cape and a heavy thick ruff on forehead, these make a very nice mount but harder to come by.

Just keep in mind that the animals won't necessarily fall in that order as you listed them. You need to be clear in what your hit-list will be, and take them as the opportunities present themselves. I think that you will be making a mistake in passing up a Mountain Zebra, just because you are "hunting Kudu"
Sure, the Zebra might be last on your priority list, if this is the case, but if the opportunity presents itself, you need to take it.
