SOUTH AFRICA: African Sky Safaris

Hello Single Shot,

Let me start out saying that it is because of posts like yours that I have booked a hunt with African Sky Safaris. I am also doing a Beginner's hunt for a blue wildebeest, Impala and a Warthog. So far they have been really helpful with explaining everything. I do have one question that I hope you can answer for me. I will be on safari with my wife and daughter and we plan on traveling to other spots in Africa after the hunt, it was suggested that I use the PH's rifles and leave my rifles at home because it would be safer and easier than traveling with them. Would you recommend using the PH's rifles?

I would. The PH's .308 was great and I'm glad I didn't bring mine. The ammo was expensive: $100 for c. 10 rounds, but I'm still glad I didn't bring any of that, either. You'll be very tired and a little wary when you get to South Africa, even if you've been before; you'll want to have no hassles or delays of any kind and, even though safari companies have a lot of experience with getting clients' rifles into and around the country, and even though that sort of thing frequently goes smoothly, sometimes it doesn't, and it's nice not to have to think about it.

Thank you for your quick reply Single Shot .410. I heard a lot of horror stories from people at my local range about other safari company's rifles. It is a relief to know that I can leave my rifles at home and not have to go through the hassles that you mentioned, this being my 1st trip to Africa.

I did a Beginner's Safari with African Sky Safaris last month. African Sky did everything they said they'd do. The PH and office staff were efficient, helpful, and friendly. The lodge and farms were beautiful and nice.

As for the hunt, well, unlike many of the people who've posted reports here, I don't have any dramatic stories to tell you, but I got the trophies I went there to get, and I had a blast doing it. As my user name implies, I grew up hunting doves over stock tanks (and whitetails over feeders), so riding around in gorgeous country on a landcruiser, spotting game, getting out for a brief stalk, and shooting from sticks seemed pretty sporting to me, as well as a bit of an adventure. I couldn't be happier with my experience.

Now, my trophies are being prepared by Capricorn Taxidermy in South Africa. Hopefully, I'll be able to report back in a few months that they did as well mounting my trophies as African Sky did helping me find them.

In short, I had a really fun, comfortable, and otherwise satisfying hunt. I'd recommend African Sky Safaris to anyone.

I just got my trophies back from Capricorn Taxidermy in Polokwane, South Africa. They turned-out great. African Sky didn't exactly recommend Capricorn, but my PH did invite them to the lodge before I left, and vouched for their work.

And with that, my experience is complete. I had a lot of fun, everything went smoothly, and I'd confidently recommend African Sky to anyone, particularly a first-timer who wants things to be done the right way, and who's willing to pay for it.

Single shot 410 we would love to see pics of the trophies you took as well as the mount, some of us may want to use them in the future.:thumb:

Any pictures of your trophy work?

I had Capricon do my taxidermy work too. It's on the ocean now coming to me and I can hardly wait. I have a picture of my Kudu and Impala in my photo gallery that they did

Single shot 410. Did you ship by sea or air? Did you get a second bill from an import agent after your trophies arrived? Curious about others experience.
