I'm going to Zimbabwe this June with my dad and among some plainsgame animals, I'm interested in hunting a few more unusual species. I'd like to take a Rock Hyrax for fun but we're confused about whether it would be legal to export it.

We will be possibly hunting in two plainsgame areas, one of which is private land. Originally, our PH said that we couldn't take hyrax because it wasn't on quota. However, after talking further, we might be able to visit the private land where it is at the landowner's discretion whether we can take hyrax. Our PH said we could hunt a Rock Hyrax there, but it's still not on "quota" so we might not be able to take it home.

Is it a Zimbabwe law or US law that hyrax is not exportable? The Hyrax is not listed on the AH's article for hunted animal species in Zim.

It's not too important for me to hunt one, but I'd like to know for sure whether or not it's legal.

I dont know if the rock rabbits are exportable but they would be fun to shoot. I love the Patrick Henry quote I don't know that I've read the whole quote before just the last part. good luck on your safari

I do think you should check with your importer and exporter to see if you are allowed the permits to bring back the Hyraz. Just maybe you will be able to secure a permit in advance. do not wait to apply for the permit until you have one in hand and no way to bring it back if that what you want to do.

I think you will have to take a small rifle along (like a 22 LR or mag) for these little critters as we saw them in the rocks and on rock hill sides. when you were close they left quickly and were only sunning them selves in the AM from what i saw.

We saw many last year while in Zimbabwe and from what i was told they were off limits.

@James.Grage

So they probably aren't considered a true game animal? That surprises me, but I'll look into it and have my dad ask our PH again what the protocol is.
Thanks for the help.

Game is not quite the word for it but many people do "hunt" Dassies. Rock Hyrax.

The Tree Hyrax is a vulnerable species under RSA TOPS legislation. Not the Rock Hyrax.

Interesting question about exporting. Not on your typical list for sure.

Let us know what the PH has to say about Zim laws.

Cannot give you info on Zim . In Limpopo South Africa just across the river they are a protected wild animal and need a permit to hunt one . The first thing you should look at is posibilty of importation ! Good luck !

Happy Hunting !!

Zim Parks latest Tariff Sheet has the Rock Dassie Pelts on the Auction list. So, someone can hunt them.

Small Mammal collecting permit is $500.00 USD per day.

That would be a steep fee to take a Dassie or two.
