Hi All,

Must say this is a great site. Joined a few days ago and have really learned a lot. Thanks for the support. As I plan my first trip to Africa...want to understand the soft costs. What is appropriate in terms of gratuity?

Who gets tipped? How much?

For instance, if I book a plains game hunt for 4-6 animals...have a great time, and have spent 6000us...what is appropriate?

Welcome to the forum!
This was covered at GREAT length with a wide variance of opinions recently. Look in the previous threads page, Brickburn can point you exactly where if you cant find it. In the end its up to each to make up there mind, and it all depends on how you feel the hunt went. How hard did the crew work, was every effort made to get the game on your list? My own opinion is that there is a tendency to tip and overtip automatically whether deserved or not, but there was lots of feedback on that idea believe me! Good luck on your hunt!!

Aha! The search function! Just went there and found some terrific advice. Many thanks.

Good luck with the planning of your trip. At least you are in the right place to be bombarded with answers should you require any advice!!:welcome:
Regards

It's still falls on the client's own discretion to offer a tip or not...

What is considered a decent tip ($ amount) and who is usually tipped?

Per Hunter:

Tracker: $10-$20 per day

Skinner / cook / cleaner: $5-$10 per day

PH: 10-15% of your package / hunt

Welcome to AH Mathews! I think Bushwack sumed it up nicely if the PH and tracker do there job Those amounts would be fine figure it just like tipping a waitress 10% for seating you and taking your order and the tip go's up for the service provided there after.

Welcome to AH Mathews, and good luck on your hunt !

Dear MathewsShooterNJ

We are a trophy hunting operation in Namibia, Africa. I know that it could be overwhelming with all the calculations... We have a short "and sweet" answer to your question:

For a 7-hunting day period, we advise between US$400 - $600 in total.
We then devide this amount (not equally, but to ensure that even the gardener - who ensures a lush garden during your stay) amongst ALL employees, PH included!

All employees benefit from the tipping. The purpose of the tipping is not only showing your appreciation towards the signaficant others that makes the safari possible and sucsessful, but the flipside of the coin is that the employees provide a professional service to encourage you to tell others and also to return for a follow up safari. (We experience more than 80% returning clients.)

It is easier to work with a flat rate tipping recommendation than to calculate it.

Happy hunting...happy planning...happy traveling!

Namibian greetings.
