Welcome to AH Carl.

In Central America the vast majority of "hunting" for birds will be "pass shooting".

Meaning, you will be standing in one place as the birds approach you and pass by.

If you have Nintendo or access to any type of computer game that has moving birds being shot at involved and practice for the next month you will be a long way ahead.

If you have not handled firearms before look up some hunter safety information.

I trained a young man a while ago on a sporting clays range that had never touched a shotgun before and he shot incredibly well for a beginner. I questioned him and he said he had never shot anything but a simulated duck and pheasant shooting game on the computer or the arcade.

Wii games will let you practice a bit with a simulated "gun".

Look this phrase up on youtube.
"dove hunting south america"

Good luck. Post some pictures of the hunt and maybe a video.

Good luck.

You can always to an advanced search on AH at Advanced Search

I would also suggest asking your dad a few more questions in regard to the bird hunting trip he booked for you guys... Find out also if the hunting outfit that you will be hunting with has a website. Further to that find out more about the country of Nicaragua and it's people and google bird hunting in Nicaragua.

He said he booked under Nicaragua Dove Hunting Experience | Bird Hunting Experience, I looked at the website but it seems the site is on maintenance now as this is not the site I looked a few days ago.

Well, thanks for the tips Jerome these are the questions I really need to ask. I start to learn a lot and overwhelmed how you welcome me guys and share your experiences.

Welcome to AH Carl! I'm willing to bet your dad will be impressed that you want to learn let him teach you what he knows there's no bigger pleasure then teaching your son one of your favorite sports. Just have fun and enjoy the time with your father its the memories that count.

Yes we will enjoy every single minute of it. This is our first time that he invite us on in his hunting trips, unlike before that he tell his experiences in a story. I'm really excited to feel the way he feels on his first try. :)

Thanks for warm welcome, Bobpuckett!

Welcome to AH Carl. By the way, Nicaragua has the best rhum in the world !

If I'm not mistaken you are referring to Flor de Caña Rum. They said this already win 72 international medals and one of the best Rum in Central America.

I recall my Dad said the reason why keeps on coming back to Nicaragua is because of the 18 yr old rum called Flor de Cana Centenario Gold. I wonder what is the taste of a rum that is 18yr/old.

Noted Sir!

Yes, I do play that game bird shooting. But having a shotgun is different than having a joystick.

If you have not handled firearms before look up some hunter safety information.

Thanks for the tips, yes i haven't handled any firearms upto now that's why I find it difficult and I don't want to mess on our vacation on learning how to use a riffle.

Good luck. Post some pictures of the hunt and maybe a video.

Good luck.

yes I will, thanks for the tips! I'm really excited!

i would find a clay club and go for lessons, as trying to learn on the shoot will detract from your enjoyment of it. the game even with a joystick gives you the idea of giving the target lead when you shoot, so not having shot before you will most likely pick it up with the clays under tuition very quickly as you have no previous experience or bad habits. when the instructor is happy with you try shooting sporting clays as much as you can to gain experience of the different shot angles , again with an instructor so they can tell you where your shots are going if you are missing and how to rectify it. always swing through your shot, never stop when you pull the trigger or you will miss. most of your weight is on your front leg using the other to balance, with your feet a shoulders width apart ,and that central line up through your leg and body is your pivot point for swinging the shotgun. with this stance when you go to shoot a high bird going over you front to back you will naturally rock into a stance with your weight just about evenly distributed on both feet, with your body bending backwards from the waist,if you put too much on the back foot you have a good chance of loosing your balance and falling over backwards.......enjoy your trip and easy with the rum!!!!;)

..now, Carl, I wouldn't know a 'black bellied whistler' or a 'blue-winged teal' even if it pecked me on the nuts, but this here sure sounds like good advice..!

Yes I will, I will not miss to taste the 18 yr/old Flor de Cana Centenario Gold. I'm thirsty! :heh:

You will enjoy it Carl, by the way your dad is a man of good taste :thumb:

I believe you will also enjoy the country, it is really beautiful, and the people, they are very friendly.

Do take a lot of pics to share with all of us.

Wish you the best on your hunt.

Thank you enysse. How long you been in this sports?

For over 3 decades, I have been hunting and fishing.

I would learn to shoot clay pigeons with a shotgun, before I went hunting. It would be best to practice with whatever firearm you will be using a pump, semi-auto, over-under, or side by side. I have shot them all but it helps to be familiar with each and how they shoot. It takes a little bit of practice to learn and gauge the speed of the bird and how much lead you have to have on the birds to bring them down. It all varies with distance and how fast they are going.

I think you will have a great time and learn a lot. Hunting should be fun! I wouldn't stress over miss birds, enjoy the new sites and experiences.

Welcome to this great forum, Carl. Enjoy discovering all the information you require "at one place". Enjoy the excitement of your upcoming adventure...and enjoy planning the next safari that might follow on that one...

Namibian greetings from Africa.

Hi I'm Carl and I'm new to this forum. I had few experiences in bird hunting but my dad will come to see us next month and he booked us (me & my younger brother) to go to Nicaragua for bird hunting since he had really great experience hunting there last year.

That's the reason why I join the forum to learn more about bird hunting, i know its difficult to learn all things in a month but I want to impress my dad.

Hello mate, if you thinking to impress your father, then you are right Nicaragua is the best place for duck and dove hunting. Country not only offer dove and duck hunting but also an experience. i recently discover out fitter which offer quite competitive price compare to other outfitters . http://www.duckanddovehunting.com/
