I had my PH Friend look for a honest 60 inch free range Kudu. He belives he has found the right area whats a reasonable trophy fee for such a creature?

I am not one for the extra inches extra trophy fee model.
I have seen everything from $900 to $6500 for international hunters.
Reasonable? Sure not at the top end for sure.

BARTFRNCS I'm not one thats big on this pay by inch thing if its free range your going to work harder for it then they are collecting the dollars I'd say 2000-2500 tops. But let me ask you a question has he given you a trophy fee price and if so what is it?

Simple answer. Whatever YOU are willing to pay for one. One can stumble on a 60 incher anywhere and pay whatever that outfitter charges. You can have a PH find one in his area and you may never see it. As you know big kudu are cagey. They dont get big by being stupid.

+1
I think the free range Kudu have the 2% factor and are smarter then the farm raised Kudu. as to the reason they got to 60 inches. ;)

Depends how bad you want it but I'd have thought $2700 tops. If the PH is having a lean year client wise, it could be considerably cheaper so might pay to get a couple of prices from other outfitters.
When you get that animal in your scope though, it's funny how the $'s suddenly seem insignificant.
Good luck.

The "pay by the inch" method has ruined a lot of the hunting in Texas for me. I pray Africa doesn't go down this same road. I love "hunting" not "shopping".

I would never go and hunt anywhere they charge me according to the size of the trophy.
So for me I would not pay more for a 60" Kudu than I would do for a 50" Kudu.

So I would say the average trophy price for an average Kudu in that area would be the right price in my opinion.

I saw very large Kudu in the Limpopo region this year. I think at least 2 that were close to or above 60" The ones shot during our hunt were 52". 54" and 57" and were very nice specimens. If someone got a 60" or better, price would have been the same and the PH would have taken more time....but our crew was not there specifically for Kudu. I was there for large Red Hartebeest.

But I would not pay more unless there was some hugely compelling reason. And if the guy can guarantee a 60" Kudu I am not sure how that's going to work on true "Free range." I suspect there is a fence somewhere.

Just my $.02

I'm sure there are some areas of Namibia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique that meet the 60 inch limit. Tough hunt sounds interesting. Means you might also have to settle or go home empty. The different between 59 and 61 ain't much. Thickness of horns, depth curls, and length of horn....anyone really good at judging? To me if one looks SUPER and gets the heart pumping is a SHOOTER and what it scores...matters very little.

I shot a 59,05 inch kudu last year in Namibia, and that was the reason I went to see my friend there. Mainly to hunt a big kudu, he has very large kudu. they are all free range, and man they can be smart. I paid like 1200USD for mine, like I would have paid for a smaller kudu. I live in europe, and trust me here, europe is absolutely ruined by the "pay by size". He is more like shopping than hunting. Most outfitters are only interested in the $$$$$ and not in the hunting anymore.

cheers

I shot a 62.5 in. Kudu in Namibia this year. The trophy fee was $1300. He charged $300 more for Kudu over 55 in. We spoted the bull and it was with some cows and we thought they went on into the bush but the cows came back and the bull followed them. They jump a small fence about 220 yards away and when the bull came to the fence he broadsided before he was going to jump and that is when I shot him. He made it over the fence and dropped a few yards on the other side. There was a high fence by the road but I do not know about the other side. The place was 55000 acreas in size and the fence next to Botswana would'nt stop to much. I actually did not know how good of kudu I shot until we measuered it. If Johan would have said that a 60in bull I may have missed him.

Yep, what he said...

Docman it means hes found an area with the potential to produce 60 inch Kudu. This area produces above average Kudu for whatever reason its not a garentee. Same ? I asked when we were talking about it.

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
Thanks,
