New member, avidly planning my first safari for 2014. As so many of you, I'd rather hunt than eat, or sleep or anything else! Just seeking words of wisdom from any of you more experienced than me.

Welcome to AH! Im in Kansas City and would love to help you if you need anything.

welcome to AH...

Thanks for the welcome, Tom, have you been? Who did you go with? Looking for suggestions on outfits in South Africa, plains game, 10 days. Recommendations?

As a fairly new member myself, I'd like to welcome you to the very best place to find what you seek & also to offer you what I personally believe to be the best advice you're likely to get anywhere as a first timer in Africa. You see, I was just recently in your shoes and the nice fellows here guided me to the most perfect plains game Safari imaginable, for either the beginner or experienced African hunter.

Tom has indeed been aplenty & was a huge help to me as he is a booking agent for the outfitter I just got home from hunting with. He has become a good friend of mine, & you'll find his location in the states to be a nice convenience to your doing business overseas.

Kanana Safaris in Botswana is the place to get your feet wet good man. Jason Bridger & his staff made my first Safari the stuff dreams are made of & I had so much fun and success that I'll be back for more next May. I hunted with them for 10 full days with nary a hiccup & I highly recommend that you seriously consider their services.

I will post a full hunt report soon, but just for an appetizer I'll share with you that I went with the hopes of taking the 10 animals on my wish list & while hunting very selectively I got all I wanted and more as I actually shot a total of 22 animals!

Click on this link to see Kanana's add here on this site:

Give Jason or Tom a shout pretty quick if you want to go there anytime soon because they are really booking up fast. I'll share a lot more about my experience at Kanana as soon as I can.

good huntin'
Jeff

When you get to Africa you are done for. Great place to eat sleep and breath hunting.
Welcome to AH, the newest facet to your addiction.

Welcome to AH Ireynold1! You've picked a great place to start first off I would recommend any of the supporters of this site, Wintershoek Johnny Vivier Safaris, Spiral Horn Safaris and many more the one I've hunted at twice is Huntershill Safaris on the Eastern Cape. Give us an Idea of what you would like to hunt and we can give you some real good recommendations. Also the first week of January is the DSC Convention in Dallas TX a bunch of us will meet up there and you can meet some of the Outfitters first hand.

Eland, kudu, impala, zebra, maybe sable and some of the other larger species of plains game. Eventually cape buffalo and maybe lion.

WOW! thats a great first time list, the three that I recommended can do them all if you have any questions or need any info just ask away and we'll do our best to help you out.

Thanks so much for the information. One last question, thinking about taking a 9.3 x 62 for a one rifle battery, opinions?

Don't know a lot about the 9.3 X 62 other then its like being kicked by a mule. Just remember that with some PG you may be shooting out to 300 yards if you only want to carry 1 Rifle then carry the one your most comfy with and borrow the other from the outfitter or I would recommend using Air2000 to handle the paperwork 2 rifles in the same case is the same price as 1.

???? Never owned one, but, had the chance to shoot one from the bench. Comparable to a 338wm in recoil. Just practice practice practice with whatever caliber you choose and learn you ranges and what the rifle is capable of and not capable of. The 9.3 will serve you well..

Welcome to AH. I love the state of Kansas. I hunt deer in your state each fall. The people of Kansas are so friendly, heck even the dogs are friendly. Good luck on your Africa quest!

welcome to AH. bob must have some wimpy mules ;) as i use both 9.3x62 and 9.3x74 and i dont think the recoil is bad at all. in fact my heym full stock carbine in 9.3x62 that i use a lot on our reserve in zambia, is a pleasure to shoot. and its not heavy. i use 293 grain bullets but our shooting is done mostly under 200yds. if you end up hunting in more open terrain use 250grn bullets. i use the heavier weight because they shoot well in my rifles , and work on the animals. my son used the heym when he was 9 or 10 to shoot his sable. take your 9.3 and enjoy.
