hi

Welcome.

Nice stag. My cousin worked on a ranch in AUS and he said they shot kangaroos like crazy there cuz they break the fences and do a lot of over grazing..... Could you tell us what other species are there that people could hunt ?

regards.

Well the ones that count (to me) are the deer species mainly.

Fallow,Red deer,Hog deer,Rusa,Chital (axis) and some Wapiti red hybrids are starting to show up from releases (illegal ) escapes.

Asiatic water buff if they ring ya bell..and the usual goats, wild boar, foxes and other small game

`roos are not game and cannot be shot unless with a permit,I have such a thing as they are a pain on my fences and crops.

hi

Wowo sounds great. If you have more hunting pics please post it.. maybe some roos or other deer , pigs ? Thanks !

thanks: hoggys , rusa ,axis, fallow and any others. best hog deer i have ever seen. I knew a man that moved to Aus. in the 50's over the years he would show pic. and tell stories. he liked to hunt deer and being from texas ,Aus. suited him just fine in the deer dept.:)

The top end of Aus is home to plenty of Boar & Scrub Bulls, which can be nasty critters......

Got this one last year in Cape York.......

And lets not forget the many pigs that provide some great sport...

Aussie Pigs

Pig hunting in Australia would have to be one of the most exciting variants of the sport we have available. Nothing beats outback hog hunting in the middle of summer when the thermometer is sitting above 40°C (104°F).

With the right conditions, game is plentiful, the shooting can be fast, there's enough big boars in the mix to keep things interesting and the occasional boar thinks he's part buffalo and wants to have a go!

Hi sambarhunter, what animals can be taken in Australia? As Sambhar and Chital deer are originally from India, is razorback hunting open in Oz? Do let us know about the hunting scene there and the rates charged. Welcome to the AH family.

Best Wishes

Monish

The other Aussies

In addition to our premier game species, the sambar (exceptional trophy sambarhunter) and the the other species of deer, there are some other hunting opportunities available in Oz.

Buffalo, banteng and scrub bull are the heavy weights. Feral camels, donkeys and horses are pests in some areas. Then there's the dingo, our native dog, and the other feral species: fox, rabbit, hare, pig, goat, cat, wild dog and in some areas, sheep.

While a lot of these species aren't as exotic as the game we get to hunt in Africa, the harsh yet beautiful environment, and hunting in often very remote areas truly makes hunting in Australia an amazing experience.

Hi! what are the rates applicable on the game this season?

Monish

Hey Monish.

It's overpriced in my opinion... There are many outfitters on the web and I haven't used any of them, so I can't really advise you on rates as these are very dependant on the outfitter. The deer roam freely along the eastern states. I have shot them as pests on some properties and they are in the hands of protectionists on other properties!

If you wanted to hunt all species of deer you could try Water Valley Game Reserve http://www.huntaust.com.au/ and if you were after water buffalo and banteng I would recommend HuntsNT http://www.huntsnt.com/. Buff and banteng is a must if you love 'old school' African style safari hunting; this is probably the most expensive hunt in Australia at around $20k, but it is the best in the country, it's true big game, and this is the only little corner of the world were you can do it!

Best bet for success on scrub bull and pigs is to hunt them while you are chasing buffalo in the Northern Territory. If you wanted a really challenging big game hunt, then my opinion would be that the best hunt you could experience would be scrub bull in south western Queensland. This is awesome hunting and is equivalent to hunting cape buff in the thorn bush and mopani of Matetsi. Outstanding hunting. The scrub bull you get up in the north of the country will by like shooting wildebeest in Mpumalanga, biggest challenge is to choose a good one.

If you're in south west Queensland and you ask the outfitter that you are hunting with to organise it, you will almost certainly be able to go out and shoot kangaroo. However this is culling so it's head shots with high velocity .22 centrefires and in this region, always with a spotlight.

The small game is generally opportunistic but will cost if you are specifically chasing these animals. My guess would be that it would cost USD300+ a day to do any form of hunting. A driven fox hunt in Victoria is a lot of fun. And chasing big trophy billy goats is challenging if you set yourself high standards; unfortunately if it is a guided hunt, a wide set of goat horns (say 36" minimum, with over 40" being exceptional) can set you back as much as a kudu bull!

Attached a couple of photos - wild goats often have a dominant billy in the mob, but the billy in this mob is truly exceptional. Photo was taken with a 600mm lens on a Canon DSLR, he was too far away to "shoot", but I did get him on a subsequent trip!

Happy hunting!
