Advice for .375H&H Zastava

Hi there Rohan. Ive had my Zastava for almost a year now and have hunted Kudu, Gemsbok, Springbok and Warthog since the begining of the seoson. I will be hunting Giraffe next week and cant wait to see how the rifle will perform on this magnificent animal...? I also had to do some homework before purchasing the rifle and also couldn't decide what make to go for... in the end i choose tha Zastava because of the price and the action(M98) and i havent regret my decision since!!! The rifle is very accurate and the recoil manageable! The only problems i encountered with my rifle is that the action was very rough and that it struggled to eject spent casings but only in the beginning, and this was sorted out by working the action when ever i had the chance. Today its performing like a gem and i am extremely HAPPY with this rifle!!! In my opinion a great rifle!!!!!

Unfortunately for me the recoil was not manageable, and I had to make adjustments. It is fine after the adjustments. The action was indeed a bit rough but is totally smooth now after working it. It is a fine rifle at affordable cost, it is not a Krieghoff or a Purdey, but it is reliable.

Cheers

Looks like it is working for you! Good stuff!

rohan i take it thats a new stock? what did you go with?

Hi Spike,

No, its the same stock, it may just look a bit different in the sunlight.... But I am looking around for the 798 stock or even to have one custom made, one that will make a significant difference to the recoil. However its not that bad anymore with the decelerator recoil pad on.

Hi rohan.
I bought zastava m70 yeasterday 308 cal. I have order the mounts and base online.. the mounts and rail i am going to order is from warne company.
I just wanna ask from you is weither i should use medium profile or high profile mounts so that the bolt lever should not touch the scope or mounts (problem i had with brno zkk 600)....
Waiting for reply
Regards

Nice looking rifle, Rohan... best of luck with your "mods" and the coming hunt.

Faisal, it all depends on the individual scope. You just need to decide on the scope you want, then try mounts to make sure they work for that scope.

Install a boyds thumbhole stock, float the barrel, install a one peace picatinny scope base and bed it. And work that bolt until buttery smooth.

Result wil be less than 1 moa. With handloads.

As that is what i did to my one.

A nice, robust, workhorse of a rifle, I have a 270Win, 375H&H and a 458Win Mag the same. I also have a plastic stocked one in 3006 from the mid 80s that has seen a lot of use and has always delivered the goods. I bought a 9.3x62Mauser Stainless Steel version which I haven't fired, but have changed my mind on, so I will sell it. I wanted a 375H&H but couldn't find one, bought the 9.3 over the phone and a week later, before I had managed to drive the 250kms to Sydney to pick it up, found the 375 and 458, both with low powered Weaver scopes and refinished stocks which were barely used and a guy that worked at the same prison as my son was going through a divorce and had to sell them quickly.

I have found that they are good quality, all steel, but the finish is minimal and at times a bit rough (I recently sold a CZ that was so rough I couldn't be bothered fixing it, so most cheap, traditional built rifles suffer the same. The newer style economy rifles like the Ruger American, etc are smooth, but lack CRF, etc). A few hours spent smoothing or a few hundred rounds will address the roughness.

Good luck with it, I'm sure it will serve you well as my Zasatavas have.
