Zimbabwe Lion Hunt?

Hello,

I am looking desperately for a Lion hunt in Zimbabwe and and struggling to make my decision. I have heard of some quite large and heavily maned Lion coming from the Gwaai area. Can anyone send me any photos or details of lion hunts offered there? I see that ZIMAFRICA safaris offer lion hunts there and was wondering if anyone has ever hunted with them? what can you tell me about the PH...Wayne Jardine? Looks like he has a few decent testimonials but would like more before i proceed. can you help?

I suggest doing a search on here (top right of the screen) for "Wayne Jardine". Some good has been said and plenty of bad as well, some allegations of criminal (poaching) activities, ties to corruption in the Zim government, etc. Some of the bad comes from regulars on here that I have not seen bashing anyone before so that may be worth considering.
 
Being "desperate" is never a good thing. Good way to get taken advantage of ie scammed. Just saying..... Bruce
 
As I understand it is illegal for an American to hunt areas in the Gwaai. (Have seen it spelled Gwaii and several other ways).

If you are looking for a good lion heavy maned lion in Zim:

Bubye Valley Conservancy (Shaun Buffee or John Sharp)
Save Valley Conservancy, although the operators are facing some issues (Mokore, Zambezi Hunters, along with many others)
Matetsi 1 Block (Tim Farren books for this area and is an AH member Tim416)

Any of these lion hunts will run in the $60,000 range. All will be good hunts with a high chance of success for a good lion and will be conducted legally and properly.

Contact Martin Pieters at martin@bulembisafaris.co.zw to check the legality of a hunt. He is president of the ZPHGA.

That might just explain the websites where I was seeing NON exportable Buffalo and Elephant..... hmmm.
Made absolutely no sense to me until you mentioned this Mike.

Interesting way to market "illegal" hunts under the guise of typical terminology.

Good info for anyone seeking hunting options in Zim.
 
I definitely don't get a good vibe about ZIMAFRICA safaris. I have read plenty of sketchy reports, it left me feeling something is not right.

I agree with Mike's recommendations!

I have hunted mayn times with Wayne of Zimafricas and can vouch for him... He has been mistaken many times for another Wayne (wayne Dickinson if I am right,who has a pretty bad reputation). As for poaching and corruption,whilethey were some unsubstantiated rumors at one point, he is been completely cleared afterward, but as always, harder to clear your name than put dirt on it...

I just got back from a successful lion hunt in the Gwaii. Park Authorities made an auction for three lions there in early May and I was lucky to get one tag with Wayne's help. These are fully legal hunts, with exportable trophies
I will post a full trip report later this week but it was a very successful hunt, with a lion (I wanted a mature, but out of the pride with no cubs male, see pic), a 40 inches sable, a buffalo and a 40 inches livingstone eland (probably will score in the top 20 SCI) and a >65 pounds elephant.
Lion hunt in Gwai are scarce and expensive. Another way to hunt in this specific region is to be lucky to get a PAC opportunity, but as one knows, they may or may not be available. this being said, I do know that Wayne has access (as other outfitters) to other lion area nearby.
 
Gwaii is a big area. Which farm or block did you hunt?
 
That was the beauty of this hunt! Very, very large area to hunt.
The lion permit covered the whole ICA (Intensive Conservation Area), from Farm 27 (or 28?) up to Dete Annex. Also, for this reason, we were accompanied by a Park ranger. We ended up baiting at 6 different blocks and shot the lion at Malindi Station (Farm 37 I believe).
The elephant, sable and eland were also shot at Malindi, where we had authorization, permits and quotas, while waiting for a good lion to be on bait, which happened on the 7th day.

And I believe everybody hopes corrective measures will be taken once Mugabe and his goons are out!
Coming back to wayne, Farm 31 (Malindi station) was build by himself and a few associates in the 90s, before the land distribution. He is trying to get the hunting rights back on a stable manners...
Not much that can be done at this point, apart not hunting Zimbabwe, which would probably mean long term damage through poaching etc...
 
I hunted the Gwaai about 10 years ago when things got really bad. Our American host was ripped off by a couple of PHs and eventually murdered by war vets not long after I left. It is a shame because Malindi Station was a fantastic place with plenty of game but the rest of the Gwaai that I hunted was terrible! I have been told on numerous occasions since then, that the booking agent who arranged the hunt should have never put me in that area for a buff, leopard, sable hunt. I would never hunt the Gwaai again
I think if a guy wanted a lion outside of SA he may want to look at the Sabie area in Mozambique, it borders
Kruger Park and I understand it is thick with lion & leopard. I think an outfit called Mcdonald Pro Hunting operates safaris there, but not cheap.
 
As said, I was there recently, and I agree with you.
But the situation in the Gwaii area depends from farm to farm. The lion permit I had (issued by Park) allowed hunting on the whole area (no limitation, regardless of the owners (rightful or not)).
Malindi is still operated by Zimafricas and another outfittter which name escapes me. So for this place, it is pretty much under control, adjacent is Forestry, which means another large area controlled well with no or little poaching. Wayne has worked this area for a long time, kept the hunting rights after the land seizure (in which he by the way lost his farm and other properties), even though he is most active in his Colliery own concession.
I have to say that game was here and trophies very good. Sable, huge elands, hyenaes, lions, leopard, kudus etc... The place is especially remarkable for elephants. LOTS of them, and big jumbos (multiple > 60 lbs).
Buffalos are around but move in herds, so one day you see a few hundreds (Hwange mega herd was there), then they are gone for days or weeks...
The situation is dramatically different for other farms. The owner give the "rights" to hunt to SA operators, who move their client by car from SA, hunt, shoot, load the trophies and drive back to SA. The owner gets the trophy fee, no documents, no papers... and next one is coming... I would definitively NOT recommend anyone to hunt with a SA PH there, unless they want to participate to poaching!
Bottom line, use a LOT of caution when hunting in Gwaii, if you wish to hunt there that is.

Not quite true! Malindi Station Lodge was built as a photographic lodge in the early 90's. I managed it for a bit in 97. It was owned by a Harare Architect.

In reference to hunting in the Gwaai area. If you hunt on what used to be Private farm land the operator has to have written permission from the Title Deed holder. Failure to do so may see the client prosecuted under the US Lacey Act. There has been a moratorium on Lion Hunting in the Gwaai area for some years but I am not aware of the current status..
If you want to hunt there I would strongly suggest you make inquiries about exactly where and who owns it.

Some how make sure the documents are real. How I have no idea.
