REAL MAN'S RIFLES

It's as big as I thought I could get away with from the outtfitter. Really I could use the dreaded 30 06 but wheres the fun in that?
 
"Sun over the yardarm",

This phrase is widely used, both afloat and ashore, to indicate that the time of day has been reached at which it is acceptable, variously, to have lunch or (more commonly) to have an alcoholic beverage. In modern parlance, the latter usage typically refers to early evening, but the phrase is thought originally to have referred to late morning and to the sun's ascent past a particular yard.
The actual time that the sun would pass a particular yard would depend greatly on the ship's latitude and heading, as well as the height of her masts, but the phrase seems to have originated in the north Atlantic, where, in summer, this would have typically been at about 11 a.m.. This was the time at which, by custom and rule, the first rum "tot" of the day was issued to officers and men (the officers had their tots neat, while the men had theirs diluted with water), hence its connection with taking one's first alcoholic drink of the day.

as long as its after midday i dont think there is a problem. there are of course exceptions as in anything :biggrin2::beer:

Yes, this rule was made to be broken.:D I have been in many coastal (nothing on the Pacific though, odd) areas, and it seem's that the rule of thumb is if you want a drink, then it's time for a drink. If nothing else, it was my rule of thumb.:thumb:
 
I'm sure you are going to have a great time bear hunting. I wish I was going with you I don't have a black bear yet. Canada is excellent for hunting.
 
I have no desire to hunt Bears with a gun, but I really would like to hunt Bears on the ground with my bow:p

You are welcome. I was curious myself when sest posted it. (all those years in a shipyard I guess you pick up some interesting terminology). It was actually a very good/unique phrase that fit perfectly with the way this thread turned. Good luck on your upcoming bear hunt.
 
Generally the phrase refers to later in the day in modern parlance, so late afternoon or around dinner would be the common time today to start the serious imbibing. My dad went to sea for many years and I also besides shipyard work sailed on tugboats and fishboats for many years myself but I gave it up when my kids came along. No life for a dad.

Would imagine that it would be rough on the kids too...As far as definition, I got it off of the net, and yes I plan on using the term "parlance" in the future... See you do learn something new every day, I learned two new things....
 
Real men shot a buff with a .22 then run streight at him with knife in hand to finish the job. Better yet, real men through down the gun and the knife and just rip his heart out with his bare hands.

Still trying to work myself up to that one haha I did happen to get a monkey with a slingshot a few weeks ago lucky shot just above the eye at about 15yds me and the Ph had a bet going as he had just made this homemade slingshot about a week before I got there although we had to finish him with the knive in the back of his head
On a side note I did take a nice klipspringer with my 416 and 400 gr solid hope to have pics soon of it as I didn't take my camera up the Mtn that day

So Uintaelkhunter, was this hunt with Ian and Wayne? If so, I'm a little disappointed if either i missed the hunt report or you didn't post it? :hmmmer:
 
Sorry Phil yes it was with Ian and Wayne I will try to write a full report when I get a chance I went for elephant but we didn't have much luck hoping to make it back in a few months to get one as you know Wayne he is willing to give me a free trip anytime this year to fill my ele tag we also shoot about 30 impala and it was impressive to watch him work that shotgun with buckshot
