I'm going to South Africa on my third trip in a year in august...This time with my new bow.
So I was wondering if my set up will be adequate for kudu and blue wildebeest.
Its a Martin Sabre mag, 60 pound DW. 29' DL. 403 grain arrows. Planning to use Silverflames and possible Magnus Snuffer, all 125 grains.

If it is not I'll be amazed.

Put it in the right spot and show us all the pictures.

Have fun.

Should be a deadly combination. Good luck and bring back lots of pics to post so we can all drool over them.

That set up will work just fine IMO. Put the arrows in the right spot and show us the pics when you get back.

Im sure it will be great. Using the cut on impact heads is a great plan as well especially on the larger game. You will do great.

Your setup is plenty good for your hunt.
Looking forward to read the report and look at the photos when you come back from your hunt:)

Your setup will work great.
On my bow safari, I used 100 gr. Muzzy MX3 broadheads, which worked great. I have since been using the Muzzy Phantom heads, very stout and fly very well.

Using your equipment description I did a quick Kinetic Energy calculation using the manufactures IBO speed and came up with 61 ft/lbs KE. The general consensus is that 61 ft/lbs is more than enough to kill large size game. Shot placement is still the most important factor. Good luck and have fun.

His setup will be far below IBOspeeds. IBO is 5gr per lb if I remember correctly, that is 300gr, his arrows are 403gr. Still using my setup which shoots 418gr arrows 286fps I have launced 2 arrows through moose at 40yds that stuck hard enough into the tree behind that I wrecked the broadhead trying to get them out. I should note that they were tuned quite well which is every bit as important as KE.

Hi Wolverine 67

Your setup is more than adequate.

As you are most probably well aware it might take a bit more time to get the silver flames to group but I would certainly stick to them just because of the fact that they will out penetrate most broad heads you might get away with a bit more?

Have fun and shoot straight!

Best Regards
Louis van Bergen

Your bow is quite enough for everything here except perhaps Elephant! Just chuck a hand full of Prozac into your bag and you're good to go! :) Having hunted 40 years 20 of that Pro work, I still get a major adrenaline rush when the critters in at 20 yards and I gotta pull the string back!!!! :) Just gotta smooth out them pre shot jitters a bit!!

Your set-up is fine, concentrate on the correct shot placement as that is key.

Trond Good luck on your hunt all of you bow hunters have got me wanting to try 1 or 2 animals over there with my Bow have to see what I can do for my next trip.

Your right Diamondhitch. I used the info he provided and plugged it into a speed calculator which allows you to use the IBO as the base. After I plugging in all the required info his Martin sabre mag should shoot at 262 ft/sec thus generating 61 ft/lbs of KE. This arrow speed calculator can be seen at: Archery Calculators-Calculate Arrow Speed, Kinectic Energy,Front of Center % It is fun to play with and gives you some real numbers to see where your bows performance is at. I agree Wolverines set-up should prove more than ample.

Good to hear from a fellow moose hunter. I have been an avid if not obsessed with moose hunting.

Stretch if you find your self with to much moose meat on you hands give me a yell, where do you do your moose hunts are they drawing or OTC thats the one thing I miss most about Alaska a Moose in the freezer every year, red meat didn't come from the store not much of it does now but moose was better then whitetail.

Thanks to everybody for great feedback! I will post a report and pics after the hunt

I didnt realize you had done some speed calculations there, good tool.

Moose is my favorite animal to hunt. Takes 6 years to draw for rifle in the zone I prefer but at least a guy can hunt every year with bow. This year my bro hunted 8 days with bow but couldnt close the last few yards. Opening morning of rifle season he was calling for me and I had a bull come to within 15 feet and he had 3 silent bulls slip in to within 30 yards of him! LOL figures.

Moose meat is my favorite meat bar none. I have moose hunted in Ontario, Canada in three different area's over the last 17 years. All were bow hunts and I have been lucky enough to shoot 14 bulls with my bow. I have using Dwayne Bolen at Thousand Lakes Outposts - Hunting @ Thousand Lakes Outposts
I personally always do a DIY hunt but you can do a guided hunt for $200 a day extra if you want to. Dwayne provides a wilderness tent camp complete with hot showers. He provides the tags and maps, accommodations and a good area to hunt. Dwayne is a pilot and is flying over the area looking for moose all summer long. He is a good guy and will tell it to you straight up.
If you contact Dwayne tell him Stretch (Mike) sent you.

If you click on my photos, upper right portion of my post, you'll find a picture of a bull elk I killed in September, 2010. I took it with my Hoyt Turbohawk set at 60# with a 400gr or thereabouts arrow with 100gr Wac'Em three blade broadheads. The arrow passed between ribs on entry, passed through the lungs, hit and broke a rib on the offside. Arrow stopped at this point. The bull left just a little blood from spitting up. No need, he went less than 100 yards. After walking down the hill 30 yards, I could see where he lay dead.

I can't imagine your setup not being affective on a Wildebeest. They're known for their toughness, but a 1" hole in the lungs he won't be able to recover from.
