What's the best and worst African tasting game meat?

Springbuck! And mountain reedbuck... The little to mid sized critters I've had were really good. Wildebeest and kudu is great, Eland I had several times and the way it was prepared it was like beef.

I shot a really old buffalo, thought it would terrible and didn't even want to try it. But the PH grilled up the inner filet's and it was great!

Elephant tasted good, but you will be chewing it for days;)

we had elephant kebabs in the field over open fire,meat was from the cheek area,excellent with onions.
 
I loved Zebra and Eland. But then everything was new to me and everything tasted great. Even these once I got my head around what I was eating.

I'm a Zebra fan. My zebra I'd rate up there with moose on the plate, which is saying something. Caribou being my all time favorite. Zebra probably is a neat meat because its a bit shocking how good it can be. Sort of like bear. Bear is excellent as long as its cooled and butchered properly- the same as any game animal.
 
my favourite is red hartebeest ,
and the least favourite was crocodile , it looked and tasted reasonable , but left a muddy after tatse .
Your supposed to kill it first and take it out of the bloody river !!!

Hunting 2x1 with a friend and he shot his first African animal, an Impala. The PH and I convinced him it was an African tradition to eat the raw testicle of your first animal. Which he did, however, he later found out we were kidding and so I had to eat the 'crown jewels' of my Warthog.
 
gemsbok t-bones from a fat cow, fat like beef which I have never had with game, delicious...worst was klipspringer which I found was very dry

remember reading that...jeez you got suckered in on that one !! :E Rofl:we persuaded one client when you shot your first tssesebe traditionally you had to chew on the ball bag straight after it was shot....you should have seen the trackers and game scouts faces when he did it:E Wow: he did find it funny when he worked out that it wasnt really needed........:E Big Grin:
 
Zebra/oryx kabobs and springbuck stroganoff good stuff. The kabobs were marinated overnight and cooked over an open fire absolutely incredible!!!
 
I'd have to say gemsbok is my favorite, followed by springbok, mountain zebra, kudu, blue wildebeest, impala, red hartebeest, all cooked medium rare. I hear eland is fantastic as well. I personally thought the plains zebra sucked.
 
Baboon, hyena, any good or don't bother?

Slugs Away, during my last visit to Zimbabwe as a consumptive tourist, I was determined to try everything that we shot. I wanted to take the "high ground" whenever my non-hunting friends asked "Well, did you eat it?". With one exception, every game animal that we took was processed, cooked, and consumed by the hunters and their PH's. The one exception: HYENA. When I advised my PH that I was interested in trying the hyena, he shook his head and proceeded to convince me otherwise. Refusing to take no for an answer, I continued to insist. Finally, my PH advised that (1) he wasn't aware of anyone who has attempted to eat hyena and (2) he was concerned that the kitchen staff would revolt and possibly quit. My understanding is that hyena play a major role in the local superstitions.
 
In Africa I like gemsbok. Here in the states a good whitetail buck shot before rut that has been eating Kansas corn. I shot a black bear in Maine that was good eating a lot better than some deer shot right after the rut.
 
By the way- I asked my wife as she walked by what she liked since I was reading this thread. Her response, "Why are ya'll discussing meat, it's the desserts that were the best ! " LOL
