Vintage 404 Jeffery Opinions

For me, with it being based on a M 17 Enfield (win or edystone going by the filled duckpond) it would not hold the desirability of a true mauser so it would have to be at a very good price to catch my interest--notwistanding it being used in the game fields historically or otherwise.

Hallo Von Gruff
I noticed the action not being a Mauser...all said and done , the P14/P17 is regarded as the strongest actions to build a dangerous game rifle on, although not the prettiest...but the person/company who build this rifle had done an extremely good job, it is sleek and has nise lines..no ugly meta ears .....this is excellent metal work ...
Witold, here is Tendai`s e-mail address : tendaimd@wilderness.co

Still it is important to validate the rifling/bore of a rifle before you even consider buying a rifle..I usually ask the person how good the rifling is if I can not get to the person myself..base on his answer I will get more info..since anybody can see rifling if it is in good shape..if the person is not sure I know there might be a problem...keep in mind the person have to clean the bore first...

See my post about a similar rifle

Was there any update on this rifle and finalized price ?

Just following this thread.

I don't think it's a good buy. Afrikaans are abusively hard on guns and they have never heard of gun oil. This looks like a parks rifle rode hard, put away wet.

Cons: condition, price, not a Mauser, no collector value, restocked, post war manufacture.

Point of reference: I bought a Cogswell & Harrison post war .375HH recently. (1951) Very good serviceable condition. Built on a Mauser action. Paid $2550. Believe it's worth $3500. Based on my appraisal and what I paid for what I got, I believe your 404J is worth $600-$800. It needs a lot of work and $1000 would get you a brand new CZ550 in 404J that would be more reliable.

Cogswell made a LOT of field grade 375 and 404 rifles over the years. Fairly common. They are in my opinion superior to a pre64 model 70 and usually cost marginally more. The issue with the gun being discussed is the fact it's not a Mauser and it's in dastardly shape.

Unfortunately the price is to high for me. If it was my first 404 Jeffery it would have been another story...I am going to pass on this one...I already told the owner . I am getting a budget together to build a .500 Jeffery ...

Both great calibers :)

I bet this rifle could tell a bunch of stories if it could talk.

I may be wrong here , but I think you are incorrect with respect to being able to purchase a new CZ 550 in 404 J for $1000 .

as far as I know the 404 J only comes out of CZ custom shop and is nowhere near $1000.

You're absolutely right! I apologize for my error. You have to buy the safari classics model for $2500 to get 404J. For <$1000 all they have is 375HH and 458W!

That certainly makes an economy .404j harder to come by!
