My New Verney Carron 600 NE has arrived

Hello All,

Here is an update.

I had not yet fired my 600 NE with full-house Factory loads, so I went to the range this morning to find out what it would do.

Holy Crap! ! ! ... That was Memorable! ! ! ... I don't think I'll do that again - for quite some time! ! !

I'm sure glad there wasn't anyone around to see me picking up my dentures.

I usually shoot my double rifles on our 50-yard range from a standing position, using a special bench with padded arm rests. However, in this case I shot on our 25 yard range with a make-shift set-up. I think this accounts for the slight shift to the "left" on the targets.

My VC barrels are 7/8" apart at the muzzle, so it looks like there is a slight convergence at 25 yards, but I'm very much satisfied with the results - regulation being "right-on".

My reduced handload, which were much more pleasant to shoot, and resulted in nearly identical grouping.

How cool that your reduced load printed right on with the heavier load.

Did you take the rifle deer hunting this year?

I made the mistake of dropping into the VC booth. Held, fondled and salivated over just a "plain" PH model. I don't know squat about doubles, but wow it sure seemed an awfully fine made piece of hardware. Forgot the name of the gent I spoke to, but he certainly was a nice fellow and took time to educate me a bit.

I mentioned having shot a 450-400 in the past and found it quite easy to handle and perhaps a .470NE would be that much more of a rifle. He actually recommended the .500NE over the .470NE and said the felt recoil would be less. Found that interesting. Someday perhaps......

Hello Phoenix Phi,

Thanks for the reply.

You probably spoke with Ken Buch. He's a very nice fellow and very knowledgeable about doubles and all the calibers.

i would also recommend the 500 NE over the 470 NE. however i would disagree that the 500 NE will have less felt recoil. the 500 will have more recoil but it wont be much more.

thats some fine shooting buckstix, thanks for taking the time to post about your range session. you also confirmed my theory that Kynoch loads all their cartridges light. there are quite a few stories related to underloaded 600 NE cartridges failing to penetrate an elephants skull. i guess the bullet is too wide to be moving that slow.

will you be hand loading your own full power cartridges for a proper 2000fps?

Hello matt85,

IMHO, I think the key words to the recoil recommendation of the 500 vs the 470 is "felt recoil". Even though the "absolute recoil" will be more, the "felt recoil" is less due to the lower reward-velocity of the rifle.

I suspect that eventually I will handload to full power loads, but for now, my charging paper elephants have been adequately flattened with my reduced loads.

Gizmo say sit all... that is a FINE rifle and a real BEAUTY to behold. Well done to the proud owner... it shoots on a tickey as well at the 50m mark!!

the 500 NE and the 470 NE give the same velocity (2100-2150 fps). the 500 NE tosses an extra 70gr of lead downrange so its got a bit more push to the shoulder assuming all other factors are equal (weight and stock shape). as said though, i prefer the 500 NE because i believe you get better performance then the 470 NE for only a small cost in extra recoil (not that anything is wrong with a 470 NE).

you never know, those paper elephants might take you by surprise some day! i usually slay my paper elephants with 600gr cast lead bullets at 1850fps from my 505 Gibbs. if you dont mind me asking, where do you live? i would love to swap some shots and stories with you some time. i can bring a 505 Gibbs and a 585 HE with plenty of ammunition in what ever speeds you wish to try.

ive seen much of your collection before although there is a few in that list which i missed some how, truly some outstanding firearms! love the 20-577, ive got a soft spot for hammered double rifles. im always on the look out for a hammered 577 NE.

i would love to see your collection in person some day! not sure when id be able to make it to Wisconsin but you never know where life will lead you. ive run into forum members on the other side of the world while hunting so anything is possible (i ran into CAustin in Limpopo).

I believe Ken would also be known as Kebco. I don't think that was him, it was one of the gents from France.

Very nice rifle indeed. There's not a better feeling than getting your first double. If there is.....it probably can't be discussed on this site LOL. Congrats!!!

Hello Phoenix Phil,

Thanks for the reply.
