BUT I DONT KNOW WHY BUT CRAIG BODDINGTON DID TELL ME THAT THE 460 WEATHERBY WAS ONE OF A FEW CALIBERS THAT COULD ACTUALLY STOP A BUFFALO CHARGE AT 10 PACES. I WENT HOME AND LOOKED UP ANY SHOT YOU WANT RELOADING MANUAL FROM A-SQUARE AND WHAT DID I FIND. CRAIG ACTUALLY DID THE ARTICLE ON THE 460 RELOADING. AND THERE IN BLACK IN WHITE WAS THE SAME THING HE TOLD ME. ABOUT THE 460 WBY STOPPING A CAPE AT 10 PACES. OH WELL. STILL SHOT PLACEMENT IS THE KEY I KNOW. BUT I AM WANTING ALL THE INSURANCE I CAN GET IF I GET CHARGED. AND AS LITTLE AS I WILL HUNT BUFFALO THOUGH IT IS PROBALY STUPID OF ME BECAUSE THE PH WILL HAVE A BIG GUN TO BACK ME UP ANYWAY. AND CRAIG'S RECCOMENDATION ON A 416 AS BEING A GOOD CHOICE FOR A 1 GUN SAFARI RIFLE IF THE BIG 5 IS INCLUDED I AM SURE IS SOUND GOOD ADVICE.

I WANT TO SAY SOMETHING THAT I THINK IS VERY IMPORTANT. AS THIS THREAD STARTED IT WAS SOMEONE THAT WANTED TO POSSIBLY USE A 460 WEATHERBY FOR A HUNT IN AFRICA. IN ALL HONESTY I WOULD DISCOURAGE THIS FOR A FIRST TIME HUNTER. I PERSONALY NOW AM USING A 375 STAINLESS STEEL MODEL 70 WINCHESTER WITH AFTER MARKET FIBEROPTIC SIGHTS AND A RUBBER OVERMOULDED STOCK. THIS IS A DREAM RIFLE. WHEN IN THE SWAMPY AREAS I TAKE THE SCOPE OFF TO MAKE IT LIGHTER AND USE THE FIBER OPTIC SIGHTS. WHEN IT RAINS THE STAINLESS STEEL IS MORE PROTECTED. IT IS A WONDERFUL RIFLE. IT IS EASY TO SHOOT. AND FOR ME I DONT NOTICE THE RECOIL AT ALL. I TOOK A 400 LB TUSKER BOAR LAST YEAR THAT I HAVE ON MY WALL NOW. ONE SHOULDER SHOT AND THE HOG JUST LAYED OVER. IT IS A DREAM RIFLE. AND IS THE LEGAL "MINIMUM" IN MOST AFRICAN COUNTRIES FOR CAPE BUFFALO. FOR SOMEONE THAT HAS NEVER BEEN TO AFRICA AND HAS NEVER FIRED A "BIG GAME" RIFLE. I WOULD PERSONALLY SUGGEST A 375 H&H MODEL 70 WINCHESTER FROM THE FACTORY WITH THEIR NEW GREAT TRIGGERS AND CONTROLLED ACTION FEED. IT PROBABLY COULD BE CONSIDERED THE ALL AROUND ONE GUN TO OWN IF YOU COULD ONLY OWN ONE GUN TO HUNT THE WORLD WITH.
THAT HAVING BEEN SAID. AND YOU ALL KNOW I DO LOVE THE 375. I REALY LIKE HUNTING AND RIFLES. I LIKE TO EXPERIMENT. FOR EXAMPLE THE 378 WBY I TRUELY LOVED AND THE RECOIL NEVER BOTHERED ME WITH THE WEIGHT AND LIMBSAVER. AND YES THE 460 IS A MONSTER TO SHOOT. BUT WHAT THE HEY. IT IS THERE AND I LIKE THE CHALLENGE. IF I CAN HANDLE IT AFTER ART GET'S THROUGH TRYING TO TAME IT DOWN. I WANT TO SHOOT IT. IF I CANNOT HANDLE IT WELL I DID HAVE A LOT OF ENJOYMENT TRYING IT OUT.

Watch the video on the bottom of the page. It is the one tagged 404 Jeffery.

Freeze frame as he works the bolt. You will see his thumb is never on top of the bolt. Granted there is no scope on the rifle but this guy shoots a bolt gun better than most. Basically he uses the palm of his hand.

Maybe give this a try.

BUT PERSONALLY I LIKE TO GRAB THE ENTIRE BOLT WITH MY THUMB WRAPPED AROUND IT. LIKE I CAN EASILY DO WITH MARK 5 WEATHERBY TO WORK THE BOLT. ONLY THE MARK V DOES NOT HAVE CONTROLLED FEED. NOW I KNOW THE TWO CAMPS GET REALY HOT OVER WHICH THEY PREFER BUT I AM ON THE CONTROLLED ROUND FEED SIDE. I AM NOT SAYING THAT THE PUSH FEED GUYS ARE WRONG. ONLY DIFFERENT AND I JUST HAPPENED TO BE ON THE CRF SIDE. IF YOU COULD HELP ME FIND THAT VIDEO I WOULD REALY APPRECIATE IT.

Hello first of all to apologize for the long absence and a little late to wish a Happy Year the members of the forum. I have praised myself like you you know for 458 Lott. This is my option.

I have seen pretty much in this regard in Africa and came to the following conclusion:
The bigger the Fear, The Bigger the GUN....

I hear you loud and clear about the Mark V MarineHawk. I have had a good half dozen of them over the past 35 years. I have never been without one. My most recent one is an American SLS in 300 Wby Mag. It is the slickest action I have ever owned, and that includes 4 Sakos. At an approximate angle of 10 degrees, my unlocked bolt slides full length open, yet the action is tight with no slop. It is ultra reliable and it has never miss fed a round ever. Fast or slow, it does what it was designed to do. I also have a CZ550 American 9.3x62. I love this ultra reliable rifle also. Alas it is nowhere near as smooth as my Mk V. If I was going into battle against anything, I would take the first one my right hand grabbed.. I have Zeiss Victory Diavari on both. AWESOME..

Lots of good advice on this track. Reference the .460 WBY, which I have shot, along with 450-400's, .500NE, .458, and a bunch of other DG calibers is that the .460:

- .460 best ONLY for the most dangerous of game and NOTHING else (too heavy, loud, expensive ammo, hard to get off repititive shots due to recoil, hard for long range accuracy, hell on optics, finish on some models gives off LOTS of glare to make YOU a target)
- Rationale for lugging such a large weapon is negated if you can't hit what you're aiming at. Large game (elephants, rhino, buffalo) can soak up a lot of lead if your shot is poor - even from a .460. In any case, your PH will be there if your shot goes awry, which happens much less with a .375 H&H than the large .40 and .50+ calibers.
- There is no such thing as "too small" if you use the right bullets, hit the right spot, and know how to f/u with accurate shots. Usually the same guns you use in the US for big game will suffice for African game. Deer size and below - 30.06 works great; medium size game (Oryx, Wildebeast, Waterbuck etc - 30.06 - 300 Win Mag, large game only - 450-400 to .458. With that said, the 30.06 will usually kill anything up to Eland if the shot is right, and the .375 anything. There is a lot of logic in the phrase "one gun".

My two cents worth, but of course you hunt with whatever you want to hunt with, and if you want to use a 700NE for impala - you're choice. It's your hunt and your adventure!
