These fish are living dinosaurs, we had a good day recently in the Trinity River in Texas. Anyone considering this trip won't be disappointed, I wrote a full article with tons of pics on my website.

I love these old gentlemen on "Swamp Men" I think it's called fishing for 'gators but catching the odd gar too. I have a feeling that one of them - they were brothers I think - may have died.

I used to fish for long nose gar, no where near as big but were a blast to catch. Definitely a neat fish!

Are these fish edible or is more of catch and release type of species?

They are edible, but not the tastiest fish. kind of a texture thing. Anyone have any ideas how to catch one on a fly rod? these things live in my neck of the woods and I have caught some on a regular rod and bowfishig, but haven't been able to figure out how to get one on a fly.

Great catch cmc.

Thanks for the post.

thriller, Most of the time they are caught by snagging up here. The scales are like diamond plate. You have to get the barb between the scales pulling forward. Don't know anything about catching them with a fly. That's to high falutin for me.

This is what the skull/teeth look like.

I caught a few when I was living in Tx. Lots of fun. Took a friend with me one day. I hooked a big one and he went down to net it. I can still remember his face when he saw the teeth. He backed away from the water and said" if those things had legs I'd run". Nice pics. Congrats on a fun day on the water. Bruce

Would love to try these things with the bow someday !

Yep! They are quite an interesting creature. I have caught several over the years..... some intentional, some unintentional. I have fished/hunted the Red & Trinity Rivers for years.

Hi Thriller,

My relatives in Missouri tell me they use a small wad of tangled sewing thread or just slightly heavier string of some sort, soaked in fish oil, to catch the South/Central MO, near the Arkansas border variety there (somewhat smaller size than the one in your photo).
Supposedly, no hook is needed as the gar's teeth become hopelessly snagged into the ball of thread or string.
Upon landing one, they just cut the line, close to the knot, then tie on another wad of oily string and try for another one.
They use spinning or casting gear but, I see no reason why a wad of tangled thread or string would not work with fly tackle, as long as it was not so large as to drag in the air too much, when casting with your fly rod.

Some larger salt water patterns are like trying to cast a handkerchief so, fly-casting a modest sized ball of tangled string should not be impossible.
I caught some normal sized and one very large (well over two feet long) needle fish in Honduras, on a minnow pattern a number of years ago.
Needle fish also look quite prehistoric and so perhaps your local gar could be tricked with a minnow pattern (epoxy minnow, Lefty's deceiver, etc.), as long as the water is clear enough for them to see it (perhaps a crayfish pattern or a frog pattern as well ?)
Looks like those toothy fish will quickly wreck your feathers and such though.

Cheers,
Velo Dog.

Ugly damn things. They use to grab the sun fish I caught on Clarks Hill lake when I was a boy. Got to where we would shoot the things with a 22.

They are edible and I have eaten them but only if they die before I can release them. I rarely bow fish the big ones anymore, they are too much fun to catch and I would rather catch him again than kill him.

As for fly fishing, I was just talking to the guy at the Orvis shop here and he claims that they have caught a few on rope lures but only small ones. The little guys are very aggressive so I could see them taking a lure but the big ones with the way they feed it would seem hard to do and the water is usually pretty dirty.

This is what I have thought of trying, but a sufficient rope soaked in oil would require a rod along the lines of a 12-15 weight. ......... This is what it always comes too......I need more gear lol o_O
