Ill from a Africa Journey

Besides the tick spray my most important pc. of clothing is my Shannon Bug Tamer jacket which has been on every safari so far. Saved my buns several times.
Great camo too.

It took almost a year for me to get sick from hunting Africa, It happened when I got my Taxidermy bill:(

I came down with dengue fever in 2007 (from the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica). For 3-4 days I thought I was going to die. Horrible headache, 105* temperature, constant vomiting, and severe pain in my back and leg muscles. I take mosquitos seriously now.

Dodgey food at Joburg airpot on the way home from Namibia then I picked up some sort of bug in the bloody plane .
Crook as a dog when finally arrived home in NZ .
Used all the loos in the airport then slept for a week .
Bloody airports and planes , dont you just love them , not !!!

Foxi, hope your friend recovers quickly.....

Tick Bite fever???? come on gents don't blame the hangover from a nights success celebration on the poor little tick!!!!:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

A hunting buddy almost died of malaria in 1999, got it in Tanz and our local docs where too slow to diagnose it.

He lost 26kg and was severely weakened for 6 months..

Just learned that I got tick fever i Limpopo two years ago.
My right leg hurt very bad on the flight home but I thought i stretched
a muscle or something. Than I got high fever,so the 14 hour flight home
was not fun.:( But I thought I got the flue or something.
When I got home I noticed that my glands in the leg was big like hens egg.
After a week with high fever I found a black hole on the back side of my leg,
than I went to the hospital, but they din't know what it was wrong but I got some medicine
and got well after another week.
Didn't see any ticks and have never heard about tick fever before I read about it in
Nordic safari clubs journal this week.

Wow....amazing trophies.....I can see the Argetinian hunter E.Gerlero was hunting with you.....incredible Impala He got there.....unfortunatelly He passes away two years ago.......!!!!

Yeah we had some great hunts with Eduado,I believe he got sleeping sickness from his hunt in Zambia!

Oh je, the risk is not so small.

Got bit by a spider while in the EC, made me quite sick for a couple of weeks, antibiotics eventually took care of it. Have a scar to remember it by. Damn thing rotted a hole in my arm the size of a dime.

the fellows which got Dengue fever ,are all at home now.
One of them (a keen Half Marathon Runner) told me, that he went 10 days through hell and than 4-6 weeks Reha.
And now,his Bodyfitness begins by Zero again.
No doctor can say what happens with him when he get it again.

He is sure, that they did't got the fever in the swamps during the buffalo hunts .
They got it in the camp(this sickness need humans, like Malaria),and when the guests was leaving, all PHs got the fever. That never happens there.
And Blaser, the Camp Owner, or Organizer , is working now with a chemical mace there.
But the camp for hunting is perfect ,he told me
Super PHs,excellent equipment and a good, gamerich area.

Ive hunted all over Southern Africa and have only had tick byte fever once, no malaria or anything else. When you are in a area with say Malaria just ensure you always have bug repellent on and sleep under a mozi net. I guess I've just always been pretty lucky (Touch wood).

Its all part of hunting......

Glad your mate is on the mend and I hope he is lucky enough not to have it recur.

As mentioned and misspelled by a couple of gents above, Permethrin is very important to spray on all of your clothes before you arrive in Africa or anywhere that bugs abound. Deets for the skin for skeeters. I guess I have been pretty lucky in this regard having been on 7 safari's with no real issues other than arriving in Zim once with a bad head cold or sinus infection and was fubar the whole trip.

Second trip to SA, came back with tick bite fever. Antibiotics knocked it out. Caught a bad cold on the plane coming back from Zimbabwe which wasn't bad comparedto the two men who died from heart attacks on the flight. Didn't expect to help move dead human bodies when I booked that trip.

Seriously?? Two died on the flight??

I think when I make my first trip, I need to catch whatever you had!!!!! Don't need to get down to 96, but need to get down never the less!
David it might be best to do that before you go over;)

Yes, sir, one about an hour and a half after leaving Johannsburg, we returned to the airport after dumping fuel. The individual was tended to by three physcians on board but he expired almost immediately n spite of the care.

The second man went down as he was leaving the lavatory, we were about two hours from arrival in Atlanta. This gentleman also expired immediately despite care from doctors on board. It is important to note that the medical supplies and equipment on board that Delta aircraft rival those in an ambulance, I believe.

Both situations were handled very well by Delta staff, it was clear that they had excellent training. I had discussions with several of the flight attendants after the second death and they indicated this was the first mortality they had ever witnessed, let alone two deaths. I was very impressed with their professionalism.

I got Dengue fever in Thailand and it nearly killed me, it was awful for about 5 days and I was too ill to go to the hospital..there was an old wheelbarrow with water behind my bamboo hut that harboured the mozzies, they were tiger mosquitos

Foxi speedy recover to your friends. Been over there times now and thankfully no illness. Like many on here I carry the various drugs that can help with many of the possibilities......but have not needed them.
