Hunt Preparation Starts Now!

I learned that helping out someone in SA is fairly easy if you just know what to bring. One of the PH's that was at my safari lodge had tried to purchase a scope from Midway and found out a couple of months later that they can't ship rifle optics out of the country and it took him another month to get his money back. Soooo I know of a hunter that is headed to the same lodge this August and he'll be taking a second back up scope for his rifle. The strange thing is that it is the same scope that the PH was looking for from Midway.

I think I had about 40 pounds of my weight limit that was stuff that was going to stay behind.

Knowing well ahead of time what people need would make it a lot easier for us to "make the connection".

With all the U.S. based guys heading over, we could make life a lot better for our brothers across the pond, with a little better coordination.

I am glad that us Guys in Africa are not the only ones that struggle to get reloading components. I have been struggling to get Hornady Interbonds for my 270 for over a year now.

I just got my hands on the first Retumbo I have seen in years (I have had a couple opportunities to acquire some at great effort but didnt need it that badly). I still haven't been able to find a single lb of Vihtavouri N570 that I actually need in as long as I can remember. Little bits are trickling in more and more frequently lately so hopefully it will be back to normal soon.

Reading your post above gave me a thought....

Seems like we could have a sub-forum on AH where folks could post needs and guys who are traveling and have room could bring stuff with them that other folks have trouble getting.

Tarbe that's a brilliant idea! I so often struggle to get stuff from the US (Brownells, Midway, Stocky Stocks ect).

Before my trip to Namibia in April, I found a NIB pair of Cabelas Outfitter HD 8x42 binoculars that are actually very nice optically. I showed them to one of the PH"s and it turns out they were much better than what he had, so they stayed with him. Best $200 I've spent in a while, as he was thrilled.

Just to kinda close out this thread....

Have been back from the trip about 9 weeks now. Rifle and load worked great on quite a range of critters (15 in all), from 50 to 300 yards.

Took the H&H out to the range today and fired two shots and they were dead on and a half-inch apart.

All my fears of shifting zeros were unfounded...we flew Houston, Atlanta, Jo'burg, Port Elizabeth, Jo'Burg, Paris, Houston and the rifle is still dead on nearly 3 months after the final zeroing (and with more or less 10 days in and out of the Bakkie while in-country).

I can definitely recommend the 180 gr Barnes TTSX for everything from Eland on down. Very accurate and very devastating when started off at 3050fps.

I loved the TriggerSix. My PH loved them too...enough that I gave them to him.

I know weather can be a crap-shoot, but the weather in the Eastern Cape during the second half of May was near perfect. Should I ever get to go back, I would find a dark moon somewhere in the mid-May to early June time frame and go.

It is still a little hard to believe it is over...but the memories live on. Taxidermy is getting started...so once that shipment comes in I am sure it will be like living the trip all over again when we see the critters.

And now Tim the hunt prep starts for your next adventure to Africa. That is where I am at now. I am for sure going back in June of 17 with my family. My daughter will be doing most of the hunting and I will observe as a proud father.

It would be great to help out the brothers from North of the border also. We have a hell of a time getting stuff up here at times.

Tim dont worry I will help paul with ideas for your mounts. After all you worked on dakotas lioness when there so I kind of owe you some help. LOL I am HELPING royal more as he just deserves all the extra help if you read about all the help he gave me on my relive plains game thread.

Just wait after you see the mounts it gets you back in to wanting to plan that next trip even faster.
