Well, I am almost ready for trip to Namibia hunting with Jerome's outfit at Ozondjahe Safaris in Sept. I am very confused as to the Cites permits. Somebody please help me out on this. I will be hunting plains game along with a WARTHOG and a CHACMA BABBOON. Do I need cites permits for these 2 species? It seems (if I am reading correctly) that I do but it all seems so confusing to me. First time I have ever dealt with importing anything and I would really appreciate some thoughts on this. THANKS - Jeff

I don't believe that you have any worries other than the warthog which needs to be shipped to a USDA approved site if you are bringing the hide home. If you are bringing just the skull and tusk then there is no problem from what I remember when I did my checking for my safari.

Do you have a importer or are you planning on trying to do it yourself? It is my belief that a importer such as SSI here on the forum are worth their weight in gold in heading off problems and taking the worries out of what you need and don't need.

+1 to that. The extra expense of an import service is tiny compared to what can go wrong. It's your first hunt, go enjoy it. Might read other threads about clearing your own trophies. I have been 3 times to Africa, twice to other countries. Still don't clear my own.

Yes, I will be using Coppersmith in SF. I a currently waiting to hear back from them, I just emailed them on Monday and did speak to them at the SCI convention guess I will ask them if they handle permits like that

Yep you need an import service!

I agree with getting an agent to help with this - CITES can get complicated.

Having said that, I don't think you need one for warthog, though "swine" have to go through a special process.

The baboon is typically different - all primates usually need an export permit from the country of origin, but not necessarily from the destination. They are also subject to special handling.

Both the warthog and baboon need the special handling because of disease issues, which is not a CITES issue.

I would add that there are lots of warthog on Jerome's property, including some monsters (I was there a month ago). Hold out for one of those! There are baboons as well, but shots can be long - these are wary animals. Best time and place is in the morning when they are warming themselves on the rocks on the side of the mountains.

It's a great property; you'll have a fantastic hunt!

That bad boy has both the body size and the ivory! You rarely get the two lower teeth in such good shape. Even Theo looks pleased!
