200GR loads for a 375HH

Where is @PHOENIX PHIL ..... That dude is all knowing to the 375. I know that there are some offsetting pros/cons ballistically between 235/250/270/300 grains.... If anybody would know.... It's him!!!!

If you end all of your posts with Gun Nut you never have to explain:cool:

Never went below 250gr Brad. Got the 250gr TTSX and North Forks to zip along at 2850-2900 fps. Saw no need to go lighter and faster.

I know Sesttoplman has a Whitworth in 375, I wonder if he ever measured his chamber,I came across a pic and some dimensions on a Remington 798 same gun as a Whitworth from what I can gather the rifiling starts .22 of the end of the chamber,Maybe I'll call Remington and see if they can supply any help

Marius,,Thanks of jumping in here ,So are you saying you can use 200gr 375s with success just not Sierras, as previously stated my plan is to use my 375HH as a plains game as well as a Buffalo rifle and just load use different weight bullets, Bullet seating is another concern as the 200Gr is pretty short, I can crimp it but it would seem that a bullet that short would sit off the lands quite a bit,,I have only been re-loading for 4 years or so, and it's no problem setting up rifles to shoot one weight of bullet but this is the first time I thought of one rifle serving as a multi purpose tool

Rob,
the length of the 200gr bullets might be an issue, just not if its a mono metal, like pure copper. Copper is much lighter than lead, so the bullet has to be longer in order to get to the weight. I would not hesitate going with the 250gr Barnes. I have seen what they can do. Something like the 235gr or 250gr Barnes, will do the job, especially on the species that you have mentioned. If you are looking at hunting Namibia, look at whatever is going to give you the flatter trajectory out to about 350yds and go with that. I think the 250gr will only start showing its better BC at longer ranges though, so you might be splitting hairs between the two.
If I knew that I would get the same performance(see accuracy) from the 235 or 250gr bullets, I would probably move to them. Why? Bigger is always better. My .375H&H shoots 3 leave clovers at 100yds with those 200gr bullets, and I think the photos above show that they are more than sufficient to get the job done.
Brickburn shoots 250gr Barnes TTSX, that leave the barrel at i believe around 2850fps. I have no doubt that he will share his recipe with you.

Take Care and let us know what the results are.
Marius

I've used 235 grain Speer semi-spitzers in the .300 H&H on deer and caribou with perfect results.
However, these days I generally prefer a bit heavier bullet in that cartridge, even out in open geography / sparse foliage conditions, just to be on the safe side.

Typo / Correction:

.300 H&H should've been .375 H&H (although IMO - the .300 H&H is one of the very best long range hunting cartridges the world has ever seen).

But this thread is about the .375 and I simply hit the "O" key twice, when instead I needed the "7" and "5" keys, (my crazy ADHD brain out ran my dull witted fingers).

Thanks Marius, I get great accuracy from 250/60 Bullets My 375 is sighted in to shoot a little high at 200yds with 250/60 gr bullets,I hope it will be dead on when I go to 300s,I guess I was just trying to see what the capabilities are with lighter bullets. Do you have an OAL on those 200s you shoot I'd like to compare the with the Sierras,,my goal is Nambia in 2019 hopefully for Cape

Just speed up your 300g bullets to 2700 fps and they drop less than the 225g bullets at the same speed and hit a lot harder (375 Weatherby).

Rob,
OAL in the .375H&H loaded with the 200gr GSC is 3.605"

dunno, my CZ 550 375 H&H would shoot for beans much over 2500fps with a 300gr bullet. maybe a different gun might do better.

Thanks Marius,,The Whitworth is about 258.0 with 260 Sierra Gamekings

Well I finally had time to take my 375HH to the range, I loaded and Chronographed some 200s, 260s, and some 300s. and the results were interesting, I came to the conclusion that if a 300GR Sierra can develop 2550fps with a standard load why mess with succcess,I think I'll work on getting it in the 2700fps range . Another thing I discovered was that starting off running 30-40 rounds of 375 makes my 338-06 feel like a 22

@Rob44 so you saw no real benefit in the lighter loads.... In way of recoil, speed, accuracy, etc.... The 235 & 250gr have sparked my interest enough to buy boxes. Have no results or data yet to report.

I use Hornady 220gr FP in my 375H&H for target shooting and varmint hunting. Those big tusker groundhogs don't know what hit them! Speer 235gr's worked well for varmints also.

I measured
2700fps with the 200s
2350 with the 235s
2583 with the 300s
I wasn't really interested in accuracy just getting the rounds in a 6" circle at 225 Yards was good enough for today, but I usually shoot 260s at 100yds and get some 2" groups.

try the 505 Gibbs, 20 cartridges of 570gr bullets at 2300fps make the 375 feel like an airsoft gun. :D

I have no doubt

2350 with the 235s

Surprising the 235 was slower than the 300. I think 2" groups at 100 with a big bore is solid!

I'm maybe a a little stickler for accuracy I hope to at least stay within 4" at 200 with the 300gr after I tweak the loads this week, getting to 2700fps is my goal, I'm thinking if I hit any big plains game in the vitals at 200yds with that 300gr it most likely won't wander to far
