Death of Zimbabwe’s Best-Loved Lion Ignites Debate on Sport Hunting

This too shall pass. Tomorrow it'll be the Iran nuclear deal or some other melodramatic story.

One lesson from this, if you see a tracking collar on a lion, pass on that one.

I have read that collars are not always easy to see in the daytime on a decently mained lion. This hunt took place at night.

That "interaction" didn't work out too well for Timothy Treadwell. Just saying...

Let's also not forget that the "interaction" with those nice cuddly bears that Timothy came to know so very well didn't end on a high note for his girlfriend either.

So if this really old lion had wandered off out of the park, found a poisoned carcass from a poacher, eaten it and died, would we be having this conversation? The lion is still dead, was he "lured" away from the safety of the park? Will people carry on about the poacher, post about his other kills, post his picture? Not a chance.

Why not put the money toward relocating it if it is genuinely threatening local members of its species? How did the species deal with these threats when the numbers were higher and humans hadn't culled members to allow the species to grow and population naturally grew? IN the case of the black rhino that was killed for $350k why not pay to move it far enough away thats its not a threat or to an enclosure where it could live out the rest of its days in relative peace or bring in tourist money as one of the last of its kind?

Why did you and or your friends do some pre-planning and purchase the Black Rhino hunt at the DSC auction? Spend your money, you and your friends could have purchased the permit and not went on the hunt. Or with the right permits, you could then have moved your Black Rhino to a location you and your friends deemed appropriate.

As information one of the initial 5 Black Rhino's that was identified died of old age the day prior to the hunter going to look for it. What a bummer, talk about being a day late and a dollar short.

I am sure that you have watched the video clip of two rhino fighting for breeding territory and the fight was to the death, (many times it usually is) the loser of the fight was being eaten while still alive by hyenas.

There is support that comes from non hunters. Every hunter could support the conservation to the same extent if they chose, the hunt itself is voluntary. The desire to kill these animals to show off a trophy for the sake of showing off a trophy is therefore purely unnecessary.

Dane,

When is the last time you purchased a federal migratory stamp?
When is the last time you purchased a general hunting license?

Let me share something with you, hunters provide the majority of financial support for wild life in the world.

As my African Trackers so eloquently stated, it it pays it stays. plus, If it has no value it go.

Depending of the hunting Safari booked Vs photography safari, it will take 10 to 100 photo tourist to replace 1 hunter. The thing is, hunters will go and stay in places that the photo safari will not even consider going or doing.

I think he has bigger problems. The Anonymous branch OpFunKill just posted all his personal account links. I think his life just turned into one major big pain in the donkey's rear-end. I'm sorry. But his having been a major big game hunter world wide, I am hard pressed to believe he's not on to the risks. I'm voting he purposely turned a blind eye. And I know what it is to be screwed by an Outfitter who said they had the appropriate licenses and to believe them. But I am new to the industry.

Here's the real tragedy. I'm watching what people are saying on my social media sites. The warning to those who hunt? Don't hunt Africa. This is what happens when Africa keeps allowing unethical outfitters and doesn't do everything in their power to shut them down. The antis are not your real problem. Too many remain silent. And I took a beating for trying to expose a few.

Sadly, for all involved ( Tim, his girlfriend, family, friends, bears, AK fish and game officers, etc.) this was all preventable had Timothy and his girlfriend followed the law.

It's a wonder he wasn't poisoned.
Hell, according to this article he wouldn't even have had to leave the park. http://www.africahunting.com/thread...ison-87-elephants-for-ivory.11843/#post-97213

Yet, the anti-hunter refuses to acknowledge the need for hunter financed anti-poaching patrols.

In my mind I have so much to present but I will resist the temptation. However I have to contribute a little. Regarding Mr. DQ's argument and all of the counter-arguments.. I must say once again that this site is by far the most intelligent and it's great to see more than a few opponents participate with manners, intelligence and dignity. Secondly, I have a question for Mr. DQ, what are your thoughts about the sport of fishing? Not trying to make a fuss I really want to know what you think.. Also, I wonder how many folks are Vegans at birth? Thank you Jerome and Brick for maintaining such a professional platform.. Howdy to all my buddies..Love you lots!!!

Hey Thomas, I try to behave myself these days, but I am always hovering.. ;)
hovering or lurking? We miss you janey, you should stop by more often.

Disclaimer- this is only maybe 40% related to this thread...

So, I thought I'd inject some humor into this discussion by reaching waaay waaay back into the early days of the internet for some gems from the aptly named "Best Page in the Universe."

Here's the link to his article vegetarian diets kill lots of animals... LINK

And here's a proposed solution... adopt a vegetarian.... LINK

Be warned, the language is foul.

This is an interesting point, and one that @Wheels made a little earlier too. What risk are we putting ourselves at by not knowing exactly what the rules and regulations are? This is for another thtead, but probably one that should be started.

I don't know if Africa allows unethical operators anymore than any other industry of made of what are essentially small businesses? Not anymore at least... Although maybe I'm just naive. I don't even know that whistle blowers get bashed worse than elsewhere. I'm NOT saying that the bashing of those that speak out should occur either. It shouldn't. But, between fear of getting blasted and potential personal embarrassment (and I know about both as does WP) people don't always speak out when something goes wrong. There are other reasons I'm sure, but these are two big ones.
