Hey guy's kind of a silly question I guess. As most of you know ( since I ve been ranting for months) I am going to Africa for the first time in September, I will land in Joberg on SAA and transfer to Windhoek on SAA. Do I just continue on into the next terminal (B) after I land or do I need to clear Immigration/Customs? i am probably one of the few here that didnt book with Lori so I kinda felt funny calling and asking. Thanks

If the airline does transfer your baggage/firearms, and you have booked them through to the final destination, AND you stay in the in-transit area and do not clear South African customs, then you need not go through the temporary import process.

Passengers with onward international flights:
Passengers with onward international flights may have their firearms and ammunition through checked to the final destination. Do however note that such firearms and ammunition may be blocked by airport baggage screening staff for inspection, which will require the airline to page each passenger to proceed to a designated baggage reconciliation area, where you will be required to open any bags containing ammunition for inspection.

We urge passengers to declare baggage containing ammunition to the SAA handling agents at the point where you originally join SAA flights to avoid delays during the transfer process.

Passengers with onward international flights who have not through checked firearms and ammunition will be required to clear all firearms and ammunition through the SA Police firearm office, before proceeding to International check-in for onward connection check-in. The requirements for domestic flight departures as documented above will apply to all firearms and ammunition carried in this manner.

Did it last month. No need to enter South Africa. Mr. B is correct!

Thanks guy's...I kinda assumed that since I am traveling SAA all the way. I ll make sure bags and gun case is checked right on to Windhoek.

Thanks. Not leaving quite yet just want to have all the information I will need.

Like Brick said you wont have any problems if you are in transit .
Ive just done the same trip to Namibia for the first time and had no problems at all .
Infact the police in Namibia were waiting for me at the airport with my rifle after we cleared imigration .
10 minutes with them , a cheerful good luck and we were on our way .
I was like you and expected the worse as it was my very first trip anywhere overseas carrying a rifle .
Because we were in transit everywhere it was a breeze .
Good luck !

If you land in Windhoek on a Sunday it will take a little longer, they have to call a Police Officer from the other side. Still very painless though, give yourself an extra 30 minutes.

Your dead right .
When we were leaving Namibia we had a to wait about an hour to check my rifle in .
There was a plane arriving from SA at the same time and only one police officer on duty .
Still no drama really .

Fantastic. I traveled and hunted New Zealand twice and had more trouble in L.A. Then I did in NZ. My understanding is the Namibian police are helpful and nice. I believe my baggage will be checked through to Windhoek. Thanks everyone.

From my understanding only if they have an inter line agreement

All the airlines i used are members of the Star Alliance group so baggage transfer while in transit is no problem .
My daughter is a travel agent and said it can be a problem sometimes when transferring onto airlines which are not a Star Alliance member .
You might have to transfer your own luggage and firearms which would mean clearing customs .

Yes fly with Star Alliance or a similar setup, I put my luggage on in Grande Prairie Alberta and pick it up in Windhoek. It's usually Air Canada to Frankfurt or London then SAA to Joburg and Windhoek, get into Joburg at 7:00 AM and leave for Windhoek at 9:30 ish. Get to Windhoek at 10:30 AM

Flying SAA from New York to Joburg to Port Elizabeth do I pick up rifle in Joberg or check it through to PE?

JB I'm flying Seattle to New York on Delta then SAA to Port Elizabeth I have a 4 hour layover in Joburg just making sure I have my act together. So I will clear in Joburg then check onto my connecting flight. Yes I'm using PHASA. My first trip I overnighted in Joburg then onto Namibia.

This last May was my first time through Joberg and then to Port Elizabeth and I used a agent for the permits and transfer, I would highly recommend for you to do it also if you are a first timer or even a savey traveler thorough Joburg.

If you use a agent they will meet you right at the plane and whisk you right through all the lines and they will have your pre apporved permits with them. The agents that I used also met me on my return flight from PE at Joberg after I had picked up my rifle and suitcase and wisked me back through where I needed to go and left me at the security checkpoint. I did pay extra for a meet and greet and it was a great experience with no problems at all.
