SOUTH AFRICA: My Hunt With Lategan Safaris 2015

Great report BB! Thank you for sharing this with everyone. You took some very nice trophies.
I'm glad you got to see the breeding lions. Bet they looked at you like lunch!

Wheels I think that lion belongs in one of our houses!

Not sure if I could afford him. I could probably only afford one with a Brazilian. Or one that's bald like me. :D

Wes Those are some Awesome Trophies Congrats! That Vaalie is a Beaut!

Thanks Charlie! The one called "Sky" would have had us all for lunch if he had the chance, for sure!
By the way, all the best on your upcoming hunt with Peter! I'm getting excited about it for you!

Hercules would look real nice in that trophy room of yours!
That thought did cross my mind Bob. I'm sure you already knew that...lol!

Congrats, on all the great trophies. That steenbok is HUGE. Very exciting hunt, I'm glad it worked out for you.
Thanks Eric!

I'm going to have to get a steenbok and vaal rhebok at some point. I might have to book a 10 day hunt, because I want a big one or nothing. And BTW your mountain rhebok is very, very nice too. I don't have one either......I saw a giant duiker years ago, but never got a shot....so what I'm saying is I need to hunt the East Cape or Free State at some point again.

KZN has them too.

My plane leaves on the 23 and you are welcome to join me. I even have room in the car for you.

I really enjoyed your report, thanks for posting. And congrats on a great set of trophies! That steenbok is a stud....dwarfs mine!

Congrats, that Vallie is awesome! You definitely had quite a hunt.

...The owner (I hope I get his name right as I did not write it down), Henry was a good friend of Bennie’s and he would be going out with us to help out...

Hennie is actually the manager of a local agricultural co-op and the game manager for it as well. I had the good fortune to take my Vallie there as well, with Chris Troskie though. Nice guy but doesn't know a word of English. You forgot to mention how he refuses to use binoculars and still sees better than those with binos! Does he still have the pet Caracal?

Thanks for the name correction Bruce. I actually over-thought it once I got back. I thought I remembered "Hennie" but I convinced myself I was confusing it with "Bennie" (It's hell to get old!)
It's definitely the same guy! Eyes like a eagle and up and down mountains without breaking a sweat. All at 56 yrs old! Didn't see a pet caracal, but that does't mean he didn't have one there. He called Bennie the next night to have him ask me if I wanted a caracal. He caught two the night we left in a couple of live traps he had out.

Ya he caught the mother in one of his traps with a whole litter. He killed all but 2, kept 1 himself and gave one to his neibor.

I had forgotten about his 10 mile stride! probably because my 9 mile stride wasn't completely put to shame. (I don't have as many steps behind me as you yet either though) :D I also had trouble keeping up to 260lb Jannie on that trip, another landowner, he had recently lost over 100lb and was as spry as a spring chicken!

When I was hunting with Chris we actually stayed at Bennies for 5 days or so, it sure is a nice place and I also loved being serenaded to sleep by the Lions, I think one of the males you pictured would be the 6 month old cub he had when I was there.

Man, this really reminds me of just how small a world we live in! Pretty cool actually!

Great report! Congratulations on an awesome trip!

Don't tell me that Lechwe is one of Jannies? He was very proud of his Lechwe herd and at the time I was there he had only allowed 1 old breeding bull from his original stock to be shot from it. He was considering starting to hunt them at that time but was just not quite there yet. Elandsfontain I believe he calls his place.

Don't think it was the same place. If I remember correctly, the place with the lechwe was "Heartland". If you want a BIG lechwe, they are definitely there.

It looks like that 11 year postponement was well worth it! Hope to see you and the wife at DSC again this January!
