One of my outfitter has some old bull Rhino that have had the horn cut off to prevent them being poached. These bulls are past their prime and are being removed from the herds. While Rhino will never be cheap this is a good opportunity to take one at a very discounted price. These are 5 day hunts all inclusive of DR, PH, food lodge etc. $35,000.

Please email me if you are interested in this.

Wow that is interesting.... Never thought much about hunting a rhino... Figured it was just something not really do-able this day in age.... Difficult to get excited about a dart hunt, and would not want to contribute to the downfall of the species... But this sounds like something that makes a lot of sense and actually seems like a good management tool. And certainly understandable that the owner needs a value out of the animals if he is to maintain a herd.

How old are these bulls? Do you have any pictures to share here or email? What country is it in and are they importable? How big a hassle is it as far as paperwork, etc.?

What size is the property and have they been in there a while? Is it only the huntable ones in the there or is there a herd? Other species in with them? Thin bush like a photo camp and easy to find or?

Is there a measurement of the base circumference of the horn? Any way that they kept track of how much horn has been harvested over the years (or was it only cut off once?).... I assume you can easily get a replica horn mounted by a taxidermist.... And I am sure they will make it as big as one wants... But I would prefer it to be as accurate as possible to what the animal actually would have had.

Bob,

I'm glad i got your interest peaked.

I can certainly get pics of the bulls as well as approximate ages. the hunt will be in RSA and we would need to file a CITES permit to get it back, its no more difficult than bringing back a leopard.
There are several ranches where these are available mostly 3-5k acre game ranches and the rhino have spent most of their lives on these properties. Most of these animals are pushed out of the herd so you will be hunting specific bulls. since they have had their horn removed and they have been put out to pasture they are not under constant watch they will have to be found. The areas are mainly in the Limpopo and are thicker bush plus the fact you are looking for one single animal will make it tougher.

The horns are cut even with he skin so you would be able to get a rough tape of the base and have a replica made that should be pretty close to what it would have had naturally or the sky is the limit if you want.

bob, what are you talking about "cant get excited about a dart hunt??" im going in September to do just that and im super excited!! haha.

Aaron;
I was speaking for myself, I'm very happy for you and everyone else doing a dart hunt... Not saying I would never do it, just not something I have been excited about... I did have it proposed a couple times by a couple outfitters while I was over hunting other stuff.

Maybe if I got serious enough and checked pricing, etc. I might get excited? Especially if I get a leopard someday as that would only leave a rhino for my Big 5.

Are you darting a bull? does it have it's horns cut or is it still wearing them? If it has it's horns, what size?

Will you have replica mount made?

Another option I gave some consideration is to actually invest in a younger rhino or pair for breeding, and potentially farming the horn if that gets to be a legal process... hoping I live long enough to hunt the bull myself when he gets to that age where he needs to go.... But it almost seems like shooting one of my cows somehow? LOL It might actually be a viable business opportunity and a way to do a rhino hunt for no net cost... If the critter does not get poached, and if the pair would reproduce and cash flow enough to cover their expenses..... Lots of "ifs" though including the unknown of African Governments and waiting 15 years or so!

Crazy huh, but this the crackpot shit I dream up sometimes;)

It would be good to see what these rhinos look like very interesting offer , its on my list to do one day

Wonder if the farm kept the horn? I know one fellow over there who did just that. If they have them it could be reattached by a good taxidermist and made to look like it had always been there.

@Deleted member 15212 I just picked up this thread, as a caution, what kind of dart are you doing as currently it is illegal to do a tranq dart hunt a moratorium has been placed on all such dart (green hunts) just an FYI

You are however allowed to accompany a veterinarian but he fires the tranquilizer dart and you only fire a VITA dart which is nothing but a vitamin.

Check with your outfitter and make sure. Before being caught on the wrong side of the law in Africa... That'll suck!

If I am telling you something you already know I apologize if you are not aware of this you can thank me later.... ;) :)

My best always

Ps $35000 is dirt cheap for a Rhino about half price of going rate. Those who can should consider this

Jaco and Pieter;
Would that be with or without the horn.. I have heard there is a lot of speculation on rhino horn and some stockpiling going on.

James what do you know about this thought?

If it is fully exportable the horn is yours. You have to keep it in a safe and get a copy fitted to your trophy. The horn may not be sold.

Horn has no value really as you can't sell it, so put the horn on for pictures and the taxidermist can make a plan.

You pay $70k for a rhino with a horn you can not use, so to me 35k is a steal...

yes, yes, all is well Jaco! I will not be going to African jail! haha. I did a lot of research before hand on this subject and I do appreciate the help nonetheless!

I may be wrong, but the removed horn cannot be "purchased" even by the hunter, that would be selling it which is currently illegal. I do believe they are being stockpiled by farmers and the government on the basis that it will someday be made legal to sell. I would be very hesitant to even broach the subject with the owner.

Jaco is correct there are only a couple of outfitters left in RSA that legally do the tranquilizer hunts. You can however do the vitamin dart hunt.

I cannot see paying $35,000 to shoot what is basically a farm animal and doesn't even have a horn.

Shoot the rhino borrow the horn for the picture and give it back as we have done in the past.
Currently there is a COMPLETE moratorium on tranquilizing Rhino (green hunts) only a registered veterinarian may prepare and administer the (tranq) dart no exception.
Vita darting is legal.
This is a great opportunity for a Rhino hunt and at a price that does not come by often.
Good offer James!

Probably the reason why you will never hunt Rhino in Africa, I would say that you are generalizing by stating basically a farm animal, what about Rhino herds roaming on 15 000, 33 000, 85 000 acres.
Survival of this species lies squarely in the hands of the private sector and no where else this is reality.
