The start of dakotas lioness mount

Looks amazing Bill. (y)

Derek, if you visit AH you are already going to be spending money. The addiction is still being fed...

Your no help Wayne :) If I pursued all my addictions I would be the one not getting fed. LOL

The mount look really good. I'm happy your son wants the roan next, they are one of the few left for me too.

Thanks I am very happy with the work they did. The funny part is the roan was the first African animal Dakota wanted when he seen a mount when he was about 10 at a show. When we found out how much they cost I was like shocked. Now it is going to happen soon I do believe.

They do come with sticker shock! They are high on my list too.

Thanks bob.

Anyone have an idea on which grass would be the best match or some grass that you may have worked with and thought looked better then the rest
Bill- You have to use the real stuff. It's collected naturally outside in the late fall when it turns color. Different parts of the US will have different grasses regionally. I used to get my stuff from a guy that had collectors working for him out west/southwest US.

I was wondering if you could use the real thing or not. That is good to know and think it will look the best. Must you treat the grass with anything to make it last. Thanks for the help.

Bill,
Just pick it dormant. If you want to be on the safe side you can spray raid with the grass in a garbage bag to kill bugs. As far as the grass itself goes once installed in the habitat you can even mist with Elmer's glue and water or seal with a krylon matte finish.

Wow Matt great advice! Do you try to get a bit of roots with to bury in the sand or do you clip it off at the ground?

well just chatted with royal on facebook as they stopped at relive before he headed back home. He gave the mount thumbs up and told me the pictures don't even do the mount justice. Said I will be thrilled once I get it home. I can not wait to see her in person in a few month. Hope to have a finished pictured later on today or tomorrow

Depends on the grass. The stuff that I get in that's collected out west are in clumps with the roots on -no dirt so you plug them in to your base where you want -usually making a hole in the foam or if your case probably go wire mesh style base because its a bigger base. Then its secure with hot glue/epoxy/dextrine -plaster mud mix- depends on the situation and what mood your in I guess. lol.

With some of these Midwest grasses- its a prairie grass and when we collect those we just cut them off at the base of the ground , then when we install into the base sometimes singly other times we clump them up some hot glue at the bottom of the grass and wrapped with string- then plug them in where you want them.
I've been doing lately is dyeing the foam black/brown then dipping the bottom of the grass then set on the base dust with dirt as foam cures and its done, but just have to hold it there a few minutes till the foam cures and locks it in, with 2 guys doing this you can cover some pretty good areas and it doesn't look like plugs. kinda like the difference between bad hair plugs and a toupee.

Thanks matt that helps and I know right how I am going to do the base now. I am doing a wire mesh base since it is bigger. The real grass will look way better then the fake plastic stuff.

I wanted a roan too, but sticker shock set in quick. Plus now that I'm older, I want to hunt one the right way too. One day at a time.

well I got another picture to share and boy do I have some good friends on AH. They all helped paul with the finish work. Royal ,tim and tim,s wife going the extra mile just for me. With loodt behind it all I am guessing. Boy I can feel the love all the way from SA.

Bill

I am glad we could help Paul with the finishing touches on Dakota's lion.

Please notice that Kathy is giving her a manicure with a 4 inch grinder!

Oh you can tell Kathy I noticed and have added her to the list of payback is coming. After meeting her at dsc I never seen that coming from her so it must have been your bad influence on her. Dakota just laughed and said they all think there real fun don't they.

MAN ! Doe's she ever look good ! WOW ! So what am I to do now that this thread is almost gone ?
Glen
