Here you go. I emailed them earlier and for something like a buff it is custom work, but for normal size stuff there is some pretty good looking pedestals.

Maybe I should get in to the pedestal making business.Have the shop to do it just not sure how much demand there is.Not sure if I could match all there prices either but maybe good way to make some extra cash for the next trip

Might be interesting to look into. Demand is probably there, problem is, finding it.

There maybe enough to keep me busy right from the guys on here.It just might find me if I get lucky.

I am going to dig in to it and check out some numbers.I will be building a few for myself so that will give me a good idea of cost to make them.

If I can talk you and tim plus bob into shooting enough stuff maybe I can pay for my next trip.LOL

I have a wood worker make custom bases for me. You can also buy premade from a taxidermy supply company or there's the link Royal posted which is a decent outfit. www.mcgrathwoodworks.com has some real nice bases too. I've always been a fan of having good woodworking accompany the taxidermy. Make sure to get casters put under for easy moving and a removable top is a good idea also. With the African game walnut is a nice color and has that dark wood look to it, getting into some of the African hardwoods can get pricy but is cool.

Another thing to think about is doing skin inlays with zebra, kudu, gemsbok, etc as panels or strips around the base or CNC the continent of Africa.

One big thing that I like about getting them from Africa is that they use native species of wood... I want some small stuff mounted on a branch and want that to be of an African tree.

For something local, try a cabinet maker, like for kitchen cabinets.... We bought a rental house several years ago from a guy who worked at a cabinet shop and had scores of various cabinet doors stashed there, think they were seconds he pulled out of the garbage but a lot were nice.... A cabinet maker might have pieces that ended up being the wrong size or that he will through out anyway and might sell cheap or customize for you reasonably?

Did you see the old barnwood one on that website? How about taking a chainsaw out in the woods and cutting a stump or log to mount them on? Used furniture repurposed? Some old metal thing (not sure what but I'll be watchuing for ideas as I travel around. I might be tempted on the right species to get skid loader and carry in a big rock, drill into it and lag something down. I think there is all kinds of ways to get creative yet keep it real.

We looked at very nice lake house that had a maple tree with a big burl in it built into the corner of the entry and a matching one for a mantel... He had a guy sort of sandblast it to get the bark cleaned off... (corn blasting or something, not sand). Anyway, very nice, showed the worm holes in the wood and all the other character. If your hunting this fall, keep an eye out for a tree with possibilities.

Maybe you could get your taxidermist to build the shipping crate out of African lumber with character you can salvage and plane/sand into something presentable?

For my treebranch floor pedestal group mount, the taxidermist charges pedestal price (roughly $200 more?) for one animal and the shoulder mount price for the rest. They did not think it would add to the shipping cost as the crate needs to hold an eland wall pedestal, a kudu, gemsbok, wildebeest, hartebeest, etc. So the treebranch can lay in there along one side.

I agree I myself like walnut for the color and grain it has.Makes a great wood to use with a buff.I really like how they are mixing the walnut with some of the maples to give it a different look also.

Plus to me the hide inlays really make the peds.look great to.I love the zebra backskin for that but have really start to like alot of the other to.Blue wildbeast is very nice and colorful to.

Bob the extra for shipping is never what must people think it will be.Those guys no how to pack a crate over there.I am sure that tree branch will find a home in the crate nicely.

Royal, thanks for adding the web site...Matt, thanks also for the additional site. If possible, it would be nice if some of you who already have pedestal mounts to post some of your favorite. This would give the rest of us rookies a few ideas.

Royal27 I just finish building one for my Blue Wildebeest, made it out of barnwood. Since you have stated you don't have the skills to make your own and I am not sure where you are located but one suggestion if in the US find the closest Woodcraft http://www.woodcraft.com/default.as...ode=06INGOOG&gclid=CPjX_r2M-cECFc1afgodbZYAFA or similar store and go in and ask the guys at the counter If they know someone that would be interested in building you a pedestal and go form there. Ask to see some of their work and decide if they have the skills to build you what you are looking for. Here is a pic of mine with Siesta the super dog guarding.

My pedestal was made by a custom furniture maker, made from west African Wenge. One panel is hinged for
Storage.

It has taken nearly 12 months to source, cut out, flatten, plane, glue and finish my base together.

Taxidermist in Bulawayo sells them with your pedestal mount, but no I thought I could save money on freight( which is really expensive to/from/ or around Australia!).

Final outcome is something worth something you can't put a dollar value on. Timber is a rare piece of Queensland Maple- the same wood selected to furniture many of our Lithgow manufactured .303 service rifles that now litter old battlefields in Europe, South East Asia, North Africa, Middle East, South Africa, and Pacific Islands. Rare now as we in Australia have cut down most of our native hard woods for wood chips and replaced them with plantation soft woods- ie Pine, which the white ants/ termites really love. Hard woods are just that and they are too much of a challenge for termites and left alone.

I built something similar to a pedestal for a kudu pedestal mount that has a right turn.
It made out of cypress and heavy duty. it has a lot of knots, imperfections that when I stained it, they popped out beautifully.
It it sort of an end table for our couch. When my Gemsbok gets finished on a pedestal mount, I will have a duplicate table on the other
end of the couch. It will, of course, be a left turn to bookcase the couch.

That is vey nice and that old buff looks very good on top of it.

I got mine done through a domestic taxidermist. I gave him the "idea" based on what I'd seen at the DSC show.

That looks pretty bloody good, though I don't think I would want him looking over the bed.

I would loose concentration by stopping mid-way through an amorous session just to admire the mount!
