Good day AH members
I am Boela and reside in Richards Bay, South Africa. I am looking forward in sharing my little bit of knowledge where applicable but am more so excited about everything that I still have to learn.
Jerome, thank you for an awesome site, I must admit that I too have been lurking in the shadows for far too long!
It is an absolute honor to rub shoulders with the best in their trade and to be part of this wonderful site.
I see myself as an enthusiastic amateur hunter with lots to learn, I have had some once in a lifetime hunting opportunities made possible by awesome people. I have been hunting for only 18 years, and I can not see myself stopping anytime soon.

For an "amateur" you sure have taken a lot of critters.

Glad you joined in.

Thank you. I read on a different forum that there are 42 huntable species in South Africa. Now, you added another nine I think on your wish list. I wonder what the number is for Africa as a whole? Somebody on here will know I'm sure.

gday boela

Thank you PHOENIX PHIL - credit given to my Father, he is a Winchester man, so I just followed in his footsteps.

Good morning Paladin
This is something which can be debated on quite a bit – I do not know if it has been debated upon on AH, but I am sure it has been. Please keep in mind that the list does have exotic species listed.
I think to be true, one should list and number the huntable / recordable species as given by the Rowland Ward book maybe? I also think that color variants should be counted as one species, unlike I did as listing them separately.

The big question I would think, is where does one draw the line? Take for instance the Fox (European), Rock Hyrax, Porcupine or even a Aardwolf (Proteles cristata) do one count any of these as huntable species? I have taken some of each species and did not list them, due to not being certain myself.

One should not forget that there are a lot of introduced species in Africa / South Africa that should probably not make the Africa hunting list, thus keeping your 42 specie list pure.
I think the best will be to have professionals / more knowledgeable individuals like Marius, Loodt and Brickburn comment on this?

In short – I am with you on this one, not to certain myself and it would be very interesting to know what the number of huntable African species is.

Bluey

I did have some of the Llama meat - we took the neck and made a Potjie (African stew made in a 3 legged pot) with it. It was good, closely resembling mutton. I did unfortunately not have any other cut. I would almost venture as far as speculating that the different kinds of vegetation they feed on might influence the flavor of the meat?

Regards.
