So, the blame for my Winchester M70 Safari Express .375 H&H rests solely on me. That was only 5 short months ago. Then came a Ruger #1 "Boddington Buffalo" in .450/.400 3" three months later, for which this forum is at least partially responsible. And now, 5 months after this all started, a Ruger RSM in .458 Lott lives with me. This one is all on you people!

She's a big, beastly beauty - probably 90+% overall; and I can't wait to shoot her. I have Norma brass on the way, and already have a supply of 500 gr. Hornady Interlock (not the DGX) that I've had on hand for a long time. I've decided I will have it properly bedded and "gone over" before shooting it, so as to avoid stock splits, etc. I also want to have a KickEez pad and Graco mercury reducer installed; so will just have it all done up front, along with a trigger job (it's horrific now), and some sharp edges smoothed out inside the action. I've found a gunsmith in Oregon to do the work and feel very comfortable with him. I will forward pics after, along with my assessment of his work.

I will add a Leupold 2.5X FX-II Ultralight scope in low Ruger rings, an NECG white front bead, and NECG sling to round out the package. Updates will be added to this thread as they come in. Thanks a LOTT guys!

NICE, I've been looking myself. BTW, I shot my 450/400 #1 yesterday and you were right....sweetness, pleasant rifle to shoot.

Congratulations. She looks perty!

Nice, very nice! With the right reloads, she can be a "tack driver"! Enjoy!

One of these days I will have the 3rd in the RSM triad...
I'm having a hard enough time feeding and accessorizing the Rigby and H&H :)

I've gotten 2 more delivered while was in Africa. Got the 375 I was missing as well as a really nice 416 Rigby. Adding to my original old 416, a 458 Lott and that 505 Gibbs custom job. Loven em all!

Still need the Express models.

Well that must blunt the let-down of having to come home from Africa very nicely :D
Love the way you roll Bob! (y)

Must be some big damn tacks!
LOL! I have a RSM in .416Rigby. With 400gr Barnes Triple Shocks at a hundred yds they will be, pretty much, one big hole. The RSM's are defiantly shooters. The new trigger will help tremendously.

It's a beauty @shuter! As you get into load development, I'd recommend giving the 420gr / 450gr hollow points / solids from CEB. Likely I can chase down load info for you in these.

Damn, Bob! Can't get a lot better than that!

Rob there are still some I'm drooling over... There was a RSM at a Cabela's with an elephant inlaid on the floor plate and the guy I talked to said they had done all or most of the Big 5. Of course I called and they had just sold that one. Then I also missed two nice Express models, the little brothers of the RSM in lighter calibers. Been especially wanting a nice one in 300 Win Mag...

And the book I got with the 458 Lott listed the RSM chambered in 458 win mag and 404 Jeffrey, in addition to the common 375 H&H, 416 Rigby, and 458 Lott... However not sure any of the 404's ever left the factory. @IdaRam is the best expert on these I know of.

On the 505 Gibbs, @Velo Dog did a little research as well as me calling Ruger with the serial number... It left the factory as a 416 Rem Mag and Velo Dog found there were 5 of them customized into the 505 caliber. It is so well done you would believe it is factory. A couple issues with it is it only take 2 down in the box and you cannot even safely chamber a 3rd. But it feeds them well... And then it kicks like a mule on steroids! I could see maybe hunting elephant with it? Although I like the 416 and 458 calibers for that. But I also like a heavy hitter that is a bit in the light weight side for elephant because I would rather suffer the recoil than lug a heavy gun around through the bush for 10 miles per day. I do not think I would use it on other DG as I have other, better options.

I took my last buffalo with my CZ 505 Gibbs and it holds 3. And it kicks a lot less. It has a mercury tube in the stock and is heavier overall, it also felt a tad big to begin with but now I am used to it and I think it actually fits me really well. I'm really still an amateur when it comes to gun fit, etc. However @matt85 has given me a lot of advise and encouragement on these big bores... In fact it is his fault I ever went past 375 H&H!

Bob, I found this re the M77 .404 Jeffery on a ".404 Jeffery blog":

"Ruger attempted to bring the .404 back into the mainstream a few years ago but, by all accounts, screwed up the chamber specifications and soon canceled the project as complaints mounted. The Ruger No. 1 seemed to work okay, but the Ruger 77 had a short chamber, which didn’t work okay at all."

For what it's worth...

Thanks Rob! Nice knowing what happened. I guess life will go on without a 404 in the collection... am going to need a 300 Win Mag Express model though!

It was a particularly good month;)

Very nice rifle!

Very nice rifle!
Thanks! Got the scope on last night but will be having it bedded prior to shooting...don't want to risk splitting this stock as it appears there are NO aftermarket replacements!

That is my understanding as well. Although I would think one could have a custom job done ($$$?). I talked to a very helpful lady at Ruger who told me those stocks were $1000 each at the time of manufacture!

Maybe I'm a little more risk tolerating but all I do is check that things look good and then check that all the screws are tight... although I did pull apart my first one and look it all over internally. I was satisfied that it looked well done.
