Hi guys,

Ive only hunted SA once, in the EC.

On my return trip I think Bushbuck will at the top of the list. Now I would like to hunt a different part of SA to get to visit and experience more of the country and I am thinking the Limpopo. So this may sound like a silly question to some, but what is Bushbuck hunting like in the Limpopo? Do they occur naturally, are they a sub-species to those in EC?

I prefer to only take animals where they occur naturally.

Cheers.

There are all sorts of varieties of these little Spiral Horns.

Limpopo Bushbuck would be one of those. Not a subset of EC, just a subset of BB.
Occur Naturally. That Limpopo River and the riverine habitat will produce these guys.
Although some Bushbuck are traded at auction, the VAST majority are free ranging.

You won't be disappointed in choosing Limpopo for Bushbuck. On avarage the Limpopo Bushbuck is bigger (horn length) and carry better capes than the EC Bushbuck, this is both due to ticks and priclkey pear in the EC (cochenille).

Yeah, but have to add that many hunt the Eastern Cape for the black rams. I have had a few hunters who have taken numerous Bushbuck, but come to hunt the Eastern Cape, just for the Cape Bushbuck for their dark coat.

Thank you for all the links and info guys. Im learning every day on here on hunting in Africa.

Having read all the info and reports, Bushbucks are definitely going to be my main focus on my next safari!

Agree Marius, just like the EC Kudu the EC Bushbuck does have it's own charm and the dark coats they carry compared to their cousins in Limpopo are alluring to any trophy Hunter.
This one was blind, but in good shape.

Bushbuck is one of my favourite animals to hunt and we are fortunate to have some good ones in Limpopo.

The Examples above are of the Limpopo variety and hunting them can be extremely challenging as they are by nature shy and elusive. Still hunting the riverine areas seems to be most productive.

Best regards,

Chris

Nice old battle toughened ram @Nyati!!
@UKHunter no matter were you choose to hunt them,if you are willing to engage in a battle of wits and skill hunt him on foot. I have been extremely fortunate to take some very nice Bushbuck in the EC and Limpopo both with bow and with rifle. Stalking these spiral horned Knights has been some of the most exciting hunts of my life,if you take your time and do your part it is quite possible to get within 10-15 meters of these tenacious fighters.
Ask your PH or Outfitter to do some pre season scouting for a good Ram,there is a saying that Bushbuck Rams have a address, meaning they are very territorial and you will often find the same Ram around the same area. They also have a cunning ability of when shot to circle back to the place they were shot at,especially with a bow. I have watched 3 rams enter into their stiff leg, hair raised, back bent battle dance and thanked my lucky stars that I could experience it and also that I was pretty well hidden behind a prickley pear.
I attach a few photos of one's I have hunted personally and then of one I dream about:D
:D Happy hunting!!

I think Bushbucks are cool animals to hunt. I got my first one along the Limpopo river on my first hunt in Africa.

Then a Chobe Bushbuck in Zimbabwe on my second African hunt.

And a Cape Bushbuck in the Eastern Cape on my third African hunt.

Theres just something about that second one that I really like. Cant quite put my finger on it though. (n) Looks like a hell of a hunter that took him. :)

JK You cant go wrong with Chris. he has some really good Bushbuck and plenty of em.

What about the bushbuck in the North West province, are they the same as the Limpopo?

Black is not always beautiful...;)

You wont be disappointed, they are neat little guys and a good challenge to hunt. I need to add Cape and Chobe Bushbuck to my trophy room, one Bushbuck is not enough. ;)

hunthardsafaris, You have a nice collection of Bushbucks, and especially that you took them with your bow. That ram in your last picture is a real toad!!
