Krieghoff is also a good option now that they make guns without the auto-safety feature.

There are also Merkel and a K-Gun 500 NE for sale on another forum. Yes, I've been showing 500 NE to my wife, trying to wear her down.

It is a slow process.....

what ever you end up with, make sure its a new rifle with a good warranty. buying a used gun may save you a couple grand or you may end up stuck with an extremely expensive paperweight!

i currently own a $12,000.00 paperweight that im hoping will be fixed one of these years.

as for the wife... sometimes its easier to ask for forgiveness then it is to ask for permission.

well i took the plunge and ordered a Dangerous Game rifle from AHR. http://americanhuntingrifles.com/?page_id=33

the rifle will be chambered in 505 Gibbs with a 24" barrel and a 14" LOP. i look forward to seeing the AAA english walnut stock with the ebony tip/cap and fancy checkering (i paid an extra $400). but most mportantly i want the rifle to feed reliably which they garanteed .

they assured me the rifle would be ready well before my hunting trip in September. so i should have plenty of time to practice with the rifle before taking a shot at a buffalo. the rifle should be ready (according to them) by the end of July. i will post pictures and a review when the gun comes in.

I'm sure this one will arrive fully functional.
AHR has a good reputation for reliable rifles and their rifles also have a pleasing look about them.

Congrats, Matt! Hard to see how you could do better in terms of a rifle choice. I'd love for them to do a .458 Lott #2 package for me on a 550 barreled action. Someday I will get that done.

thanks guys! hopefully it will turn out well this time. (im STILL waiting for a refund from MRC)

I told Matt that if he couldn't get an AHR rifle to shoot and cycle that he should seriously consider selling his rifles and take up gardening.

Matt what are you hunting in September?

Dude, you're are going to LOVE this rifle!! Goodbye MRC, hello AHR!!!

ive been speaking with Wayne at length via email and even sent them my list of tests (the ones that MRC called a "letter of demands"). Wayne said their rifles would pass my tests as long as i avoided nickle plated brass. this is fine with me since i only have 10 pieces of nickle plated brass and can use them for developing loads.

i look forward to shooting the AHR 505 gibbs!

-matt

Yup that nickle plated stuff gave me grief untill I scratched it with course sandpaper, at Matt's suggestion.

Best of luck with this latest rifle Matt, I'll be waiting to see video of you shooting it!

thanks, I hope things turn out well!

ive been doing some thing about yer report on the performance of the 525gr .505" Barnes TSX on your cape buffalo. I think I will end up using either the 600gr Woodleigh, 570gr Swift, or the 600gr NF CPS. the 600gr CPS would do similar damage to that TSX but would pass threw most of the time (I prefer pass threw shots unless hunting a herd). both the Swift and the Woodleigh would do a fair bit more damage then the TSX and get about the same penetration you saw.

-matt

I shot that old buff out of a herd so was very concerned about pass through. But your much more of an expert on ballistics and bullets than I am so I will be interested to see what you end up using.

my thought is that the Woodleigh or the Swift would have ended up in the same place as those TSX but would have expanded to a greater diameter.

I wont argue that the TSX did a fine job of bringing the old bull down. but I was kind of expecting a complete pass threw on a broad side shot using a mono-metal bullet. its likely because the 525gr TSX doesn't have the SD that a 570gr or 600gr TSX would have. I think its a real shame Barnes doesn't offer a 600gr .505" TSX any more!

given that yours was taken in a herd situation its actually good the bullet didn't live up to my expectations!

did you keep the recovered bullets? I love to see some pictures of them!

-matt

Matt I will be in RSA first week of September hunting. Let's hope we both have great ones. I also hope your new rifle performs like it should.
