1st Roe buck of the season

I managed this young buck last week. He came out of a piece of woodland to feed on the grass and bask in the sun. Sadly for him I had been watching him in the build up to the season and knew his territory. I was surprised by the amount of pearling on his antlers for his age. A really nice young buck.

Then later on this very old, 'warrior' of a Muntjac buck came out to feed. A great one to take sporting plenty of battle scars. Its not often muntjac bucks get to the point of 'going back', but he was. On a side note - An interesting point about Muntjac bucks is that they do not use their antlers for fighting. The have enlarged canines with which they fight. Old bucks normally had shredded ears and scared necks from years of fights. The antlers are used for marking their territory by rubbing of bark on young trees.

Those bases on the Roe look like they are from an Old guy. The burr is so much bigger than the base. Interesting that he is young.

That is a neat old warrior Muntjac for sure.

Thanks for sharing.

Very nice Roe buck. Thanks for the info on the Muntjac, did not know that.

Quite often bucks snap off their canines through fighting. I have shot very few older animals with both canines intact.

Nice pair of deer
They look tasty"....

One day....

This does give my wife a chance to go to Europe at least. :)

Congrats to a great start to the season.

Lucky you that can hunt Roe bucks already.
I have to wait till August 10 here in Norway and August 16 in Sweden before I can start to hunt them.
To make matters worse, am I not able to go and hunt on our lease in Sweden earlier than the evening on the August 20.

But hopefully will I be able to shoot a buck or 3 anyway :)

I hope you have a good season on the roe. I would love to hunt your country one day, just to experience the wildness.

You too.
I am to busy this year, but I might be able to help you to experience some hunting in Norway in 2016 or 2017 if you are interested :)

Yes, please do! I am very interested, even if just to tag along on a hunt to experience the culture and nature you have.

I managed another, and slightly unusual buck this evening. I will post pictures when I wake up tomorrow...

Looking forward to it :)

Sorry chaps, slightly later than i said but here he is...

He is the heaviest Roe buck I have shot weighing in at 20 Kg clean on the hook. He has a slightly unusual head in that he has 3 points on one side in a classic roe buck shape, and then on the other he has 2 points but there is some extra growth on his left pedicle resulting in another point on that side.

Here is a close up of the extra growth, its not the clearest picture sadly.

Later on I spied this Roe doe browsing along a hedge.

I love all sorts of Roe Bucks, also the unusual ones :)
This is the favorite of the unusual ones I have shot.

That is a very unusual Roe buck, a great trophy to have.

Here is a Roe buck (One in the middle) that my uncle shot in Poland. It had no points coming off it and its antlers were 29 cm (left) and 28 cm (right) in length. The abnormal trophy's of all species certainly draw attention and make a great addition. The far right Roe buck was my 2nd ever deer.

My uncle managed to shot the big Keiler shwon and another yearling that trip. I didnt manage to get a boar and so am still on the hunt for my first.

I appreciate you guys sharing these pictures.
It is hard to imagine a dressed carcass of 20 Kg being a monster.

Seeing them with the Lab and the Dachshund really relate it well.

Well with the big stuff you guys have running around across the pond I can see why you would think that haha.

Its all relative, our 6 deer species vary so much in species size. I have a friend who in the Red stag season took a 19 point red stag weighing 165 Kg clean and on the hook. That was a sight to behold.
