Singel 10 bore rifle by Joseph Lang & Son, 1870. 700 grain round ball and 5 drams of blackpowder.

And a .475 3 1/4 NE double rifle..
 
My entry in this chest beating event is my CZ Model 550 in .500 Jeffery.
However, with my hat in my hands I confess that I load it down a bit (for my wimpy shoulder's sake).
 
Firstly, Matt stop taunting with that 585 because I'm seriously considering something along them lines.

Secondly, pondoro that 10 bore is lovely. Gotta love the big bores!

Finally, Velo, even a loaded down Jeffery is still a God damn Jeffery!!

Tell me what you think of the Tejas. I have heard of a lot of people saying that they can be a pain to reload for. I have also had a discussion wiht Kirby Allen in which he is not very complementary of the Tejas case design. Others claim that it lasts longer and is more powerful than any other improved design. Supposedly, it can be applied with similar increase in ballistics across all cartridges. In short, do you like it? :)
 
Pondoro, That's interesting that 10 bore is only a 5 dram load. My 577/500 mags. call for a 6 dram loading. And that's only tossing a 440 grn chunk of lead.

That shows why Express rifles were developed.

i agree, it seems like 5 drams wouldnt be enough powder for a 10 bore.

whats the case length on those 10 bore cartridges?

my 585 HE uses just over 5 drams of powder at 140gr under the TSX. with Woodleighs it will use 6 drams. the 577 NE 3" also uses 5 drams of powder.

I've never heard of drams used for smokeless before. Normally it's only used for BP.
But what ever works.
 
Matt I see you are playing with one of Ed's project calibres. I have thought about his 12ga from HE## but keep finding other rifles that make it into the safe:rolleyes:

who said you only use smokeless powder in the 585 HE? also, the 577 NE 3" started life as the 577 BPE 3". the 585 HE is a perfect cartridge for black powder because it has a huge case capacity which allows you to really pack in the powder. when i get a chance ill develope a black powder load using a 640gr cast projectile over roughly 180gr of 3F powder.

a "dram" is a measurement that is typically only used for BP because its a very old measurement system thats not overly precise. one dram is roughly 27gr but its not always exact since drams are typically measured by volume rather then by weight.

sorry for the rambling, black powder was my hobby before i got into modern handloading. :oops:

Mr. Hubel is building me a rifle in his 585 HE cartridge on an Enfield action. we are waiting on the stock maker to finish which should take another 3 weeks or so. my guess is the rifle should be complete by late May or early June. the gun will have a laminate stock (for durability), a 24" barrel, and should weigh around 12 pounds.

I wasn't thinking that you'd use BP in that 585 but it'd sure work!
 
Interesting cartridge is that 585 HE. What head size do they use?
 
some basic specs:

case length: 3.27"
case taper: .630"-.610"
neck: .603"
belt: .653"
rim: .648"
case capacity: 212gr H2O

i have mine loaded with a 750gr .582" Barnes TSX over 140gr of IMR 4350 with a Federal 215 primer. this load is untested but should yield roughly 2050 fps from a 24" barrel.

the cartridge has a case head size about .010" wider then the 505 Gibbs which allows it to be used with any action that would accept the 505 Gibbs cartridge. both my rifle and my friends rifle will be built on P-14 Enfield actions which are fairly inexpensive.

With that kinda case capacity you could operate at pretty low pressures if you wanted aswell.
Sounds like a good choice for a big boomer. I wonder if it'll stick around.
 
would be nice if it would stick around, Mr. Hubel is having brass manufactured in bulk by Bertram. i already have more brass then i will use in my life time (200 pieces).

the 140gr load of IMR 4350 is a very low pressure load. the max load for the 577 NE 3" is 135gr of IMR 4350.

Well with proper drawn brass being made and that kinda energy, it'll stick around.
It's like the Nyati, not really needed but sticks around simply because of what it can do.

I personally think the 500 Cyrus should have been more successful.
 
I think its an excellent cartridge if used as a bolt action equivalent to the 577 NE 3" cartridge. I don't see a need to push velocities beyond 2100 fps with a 750gr bullet.
