I am excited . My wife just acquired a new unfired Ruger M77 Hawkeye in the box with 7 boxes of Hornady DGX ammo. It is in .375 Ruger. The gun fits her perfectly and the short action is a plus for her. We have yet to take it to the range, but have cycled rounds threw the chamber. Just checking for chambering and ejection smoothness. ( Have heard reports of magazine concerns with feeding) Gun is sweet, get that trigger to about 3 Lbs and this could be a keeper.
I have been reading and checking for ammo availability . Not badly priced and readily available. She's talking resale value, and I've already ordered dies for .375 Ruger.
Ok I'm just excited and had to tell somebody. Let you know how she shoots after the weekend.

my wife just hands it back to reload or when it needs cleaning.
 
Awesome rifle for sure! I can understand your excitedness. They are great handling rifles. Look forward on hearing how she shoots.
 
The thing that got me was , she got it at an estate sale. She has less in the whole deal than the ammo sells for retail. I never get deals like that. I need to go to more estate sales.
 
We all need to go to estate sales with her. Hope you enjoy the rifle!

I have a Ruger Alaskan in 375 Ruger and I like it very much.
I am sure your wife will too.
 
Great rifle and a very capable cartridge. I was fortunate enough to do a bunch of load development on the .375 R for an article and it really is a very good cartridge absolutely on par with the H&H. With factory Hornaday 270 grain soft, I posted a 10 shot 1" group at 100yds. My load for it using the 300 gr Barnes TSX hovered right at 1/2" 3 shot groups. Our loaner rifle for several years was the Hawkeye African and is accounted for over a dozen buff and a couple elephant before I sold it. good buy.
 
She keeps reminding me it's her rifle. I was looking for scopes yesterday, when she informed me she wasn't sure she wanted it scoped yet.

It is a great gun. No problems feeding and accuracy is great. The recoil is a little harsher (sharper) than the .375 H&H . I really like the shorter action. The biggest downfall is ammo. Only Hornady makes ammo for it at this time. Hard to find locally and runs around $75.00 a box. We've been shooting the 300 gr DG . So far I really like it, and she seems pleased also. I wouldn't hesitate to take it on a hunt.
 
There are other sources of 375 Ruger ammo, Nosler, Superior, and Prograde being a few (sorry, I've forgotten the others).
 
Not a lot of big bore ammo sold around here. Still shooting what came with the rifle. Got 7 box's with the rifle. Only have seen the Hornaday here and at local gun shows. Guess I should check on line.
 
I have found that when you purchase a type of rifle round such as the 375 Ruger that you need to reload. One is to greatly reduce the cost of the ammo and the other is to be able to find a combination that you and your rifle likes that will do what you want it to. With reloading I can reload the same rounds that cost over $100 for a box of 20 from the factory to under $2.00 a round or $40.00 for a box of 20 by reloading.

I just got done loading my rifle rounds for my trip to SA next month and what would of cost me well over $300.00 for factory ammo only cost me $73.0 by reloading it myself.
 
I agree. I haven't had a lot of time and had the Hornady DGX ammo. Dialing in hand loads will come later. We just burnt a couple boxes to get the feel for the rifle. I am so far happy with it with factory ammo. But that being said , I believe those groups can tighten up a bit.
 
I think it can be fairly stated that the 375 Ruger is no longer proprietary. Ammunition is now available from several sources, and rifles chambered by several manufacturers.
 
It is a sexy cartridge that is a joy to shot and it has made me eager to buy one in 416 Ruger as well :)
 
The 375 Ruger is a splendidly-balanced cartridge. In my opinion, it is the finest brought to market since the 338 Win Mag (yeah, I just said that).

The 416 Ruger suffers from capacity loss with long bullets (which almost all 416 bullets of 400 grain weight are...long), but this is only an issue for those who think they need 2400 fps.
