Just curious about the poll: Why is there no love on this forum for the 6.5x55 SE ?

because its mine and i decided :A Tease: and i was interested to see the usage of these calibres in this day and age ...........................i could have put loads more calibres on but these are ones i like and have now or have owned, or in the case of the .333jeff would get one in the right circumstances. quite a few on AH use the 6.5s and love them and i would like to get one day a ms take down in that cal, but thats not what i asked about. wondering why you specifically mention 7x57 double rifles as the the .275 no2 was the rimmed version for doubles and they arent that common these days......., as i have said earlier there are a few .275/7x57 rifles appearing at holts auctions but i wouldnt say swathes of them.

Just curious about the poll: Why is there no love on this forum for the 6.5x55 SE ? I can't think of a finer cartridge that is a beautiful counterpoint to the 7x57 than the 6.5x55. They are ballistically near twins with the 6.5 affording better BCs and lower grain weight bullets up to 140gr, and the 7x57 picking up the slack from 140gr-175gr.

Karamojo Bell certainly liked both very much (and technically the 6.5x54 MS) and had no trouble doing brain shots on elephant with those two combined in greater numbers than in all other calibers.

You cannot adore the 7x57 without adoring its brother the 6.5x55, I rest my case members of the jury!

Hi again Rookhawk,

Yours truly is very fond of the 6.5x55.
My current one is a CZ 550 FS model but I have owned an original military Mauser, unaltered in this excellent caliber as well.

Have not taken any 6.5 to Africa but perhaps might some day.
Many PHs do prefer clients to use a minimum of 7mm / 175 gr bullet, on some quite large PG species but, I would not want to hunt especially heavy animals with any light caliber to begin with (even a .30 seems a bit light for super heavy animals, non-dangerous or not, in my beginner's opinion).

Now regarding Bell and the small bores for elephant- I will not go on and on about that subject right here (like I usually do).
But, I posted on Aug-29-2014, in the thread "Caliber Comparison" what I personally think of this sort of nonsense.
Also, I beat that dead horse some more on Feb-4-2015, in the thread "Ready to Hunt Elephant".

The 6.5x55 no doubt is a very fine cartridge for hunting thin skinned game and even a sissy like myself could target practice with it all day long without developing any recoil related flinch (6.5 Mannlicher and similar ones as well).
Never made any sense to me that so many parents have started their children on a .243 for their first deer rifle when the 6.5x55 would penetrate better for any follow-up shot and is also easier on edible meat than the .243 - but what do I know anyway.

I really like the 6.5x55 for sure and I apologize to the OP for getting off subject here.

Cheers,
Velo Dog.

The lone rifle on the list that I own is a Ruger #1A in 7x57. My .375 H&H is the reason I will never own a 9.3 of any flavor. I have a 338-06AI under construction. I understand the 338-06 owes its existence to the Westley Richards and the .33 Jeff.

I have owned a great custom 9.3x62 built on a pre war Mauser action and it was a tack driver.
It easily shot half inch 100 meter groups with hunting loads and was a joy to shoot.
Sadly I sold it to a friend as I craved to buy and test other guns and cartridges and since I can't own more than 6 firearms for hunting in this stupid country of mine, I always need to sell off a gun before I buy a new one.
9.3x62 is in many ways a underrated cartridge in my opinion.
It has a rather gentle recoil combined with decent ballistics and delivers a proper punch when it hits.

A cartridge I will never be without is the mighty 6.5x55 and it too is extremely underrated.
In my opinion a slightly better cartridge than the 7x57 Mauser even if I like that cartridge very much too, but sadly I have still not owned one because of the priorities I need to make because of the limit on hunting firearms.

Sold my 9.3x74r and bought a 7x57. Guess it's time to change my username.....

Several reason. I had purchased the 9.3x74r to bring to Africa. It's been 4 years since I've been, not sure when I'm going back, and it was taking up safe space. On top of that, I suffered a neck injury 18 months ago, and I don't know if I could tolerate the recoil. I wanted another classic caliber, hence the 7x57.

The 9.3x74r was a Ruger no. 1 with lovely wood, and the 7x57 is a Winchester M70 Supergrade.

Which reminds me, I have full box and a 1/2 box of Federal Cape Shok with the 286 gr Barnes TSX I need to get rid of one of these days...

Both very excellent calibers and both very excellent rifles.

Wheels !
Thank you for the flowers, what would you like to drink;)
But the truth must be said.

I have a 350 Rigby being made up on a Remington P14/M17 Action at the moment. How ever I will not be loading it to traditional levels. I will be loading it to its potential so should have very similar performance to a 338RUM necked to 358.
If it is as accurate as my 8X68S built on a similar action I will be very happy.

I own a 9.3x62 and a 7x57 off the list.

When I first read what you intend to do with the .350 I thought it seemed a little optimistic, but after a little reading it seems like you may not be too far off the beam. Its a bigger case than I remembered.

I have a 7x57 project rifle, sent the Bolt and follower out for Jeweling, still working on the stock

None for me.... I'm to much of a simpleton I guess.... 223, 270, 308, 30-06, 375.... Maybe to American, rudementary, whatever..... I don't reload, so I count on ammo I can easily buy/find. However, those calibers look/sound very cool!

275 Rigby. project rifle by American custom gun makers Gene Simillion (Metal work) and Steve Billeb (stock work) Just finish reloading 25 rounds each of NOSLER PARTITION 140 GRAIN and140 grain Barnse TSX. H414 47.5 grains, CCI BR2 primers, Norma brass. Of to the range this weekend to compare each load. Fun stuff!

Have 318wr in BSW Shul double 1938 took it to Africa this year .... dropped a Kudu at 167 yards off hand ......beautiful gun.

Have a 318 wr bolt gun by Westley Richards which needs

Re barreled ..... restocked most of the bolt gubbins .......... In other words I have a mauser action .......

However my winter project is taking a savage 30 06 and converting it to 318WR. Which is just a barrel swap really.

So I will have a stainless plastic modern rifle in the perfect English calibre ...

This will serve two functions

1.piss off my need a bigger thumper friends .....what 250gr at only 2400fps

2.My traditionalist friends but it is stainless and plastic

Will keep you guys posted
