SCI ALERT!! New regulations for exporting your firearms!

Yes did you see my post above?

I wonder if the trusted traveler programs will help in any way in this situation? Global Entry gives you a trusted traveler number that is recognized worldwide. Just a thought. I can't for the life of me figure out why an individual needs an EIN? That is what a SS# is for!
Regards,
Philip

One of the concerns of the new regulations was having to show your firearms to customs agents prior to leaving "from the port of embarkation" .......has anyone determined yet if you are now required to remove you rifles once you've checked them in at another airport (say you have a connecting flight from Detroit to Atlanta, then Atlanta to Joberg. Do you need to get your rifles in Atlanta and show them to someone, then recheck them in?)
Also, is there any word on traveling to other countries (such as Namibia) once one lands in another country (i.e. South Africa).........IIRC, there was a fair amount of confusion on these points as well.
Thanks for the updates..............

From what I have gathered customs is issuing a warning to hunters until early May about the new act. After that you will need the EIN which they will check upon entry back into the country. This warning will be put into the system that you have been notified. This info was given to me from another AH member who spoke with a supervisor at JFK. I don't like this anymore than anyone else here but hiring Safari Specialty Imposters to handle my shipment has been a great help. Yesterday they e mailed me a copy and link of exactly what I needed to do and what paper work they needed. It took me 10 minutes to complete everything. At NO CHARGE as I m a client. Folks this was a great relief. I will speak to them again later on today with a final question...Do we now need to contact AES direct and get something else before departure? I think so....They said yesterday if I remember correctly will will file ( something) 3 weeks prior to departure in case your flight info changes... I was such in a whirlwind with worry that I missed why......

Johnny, I did get my EIN today from IRS website. No charge! This is step number 1. Step number 2 is filing with AES. This is the HARD part! I have a close friend who was a Federal government employee for 32 Years, doing this part on my behalf. This is ALL to get the ITN for your firearms and ammunition for your next trip out of the country. THE ITN IS WHAT'S NEEDED FOR REENTRY INTO THE USA. THIS IS ONLY GOOD FOR ONE TIME!! A new ITN hasto be issued for every trip outside of the country! You will NOT have to go thru the AES quiz and so on, but your ITN will change with every trip. EVEN IF YOU USE THE SAME FIREARMS AND AMMUNITION!!

To answer Mr.16 ga. question, your guns will be checked all the way thru. For example: you're heading out of Rochester NY to JFK then on to Jo Burg. You will not see your gun till Jo Burg. Upon returning to the United States, you will then have to produce your ITN in place of the 4457.

Hope this helps. Kevin

Yeah, maybe the Bamster cut a deal with all the outfitters in Africa to foist this BS on us, make it more convenient to rent guns down there, and then get a kickback from the outfitters for renting their guns and ammo to us silly clients! Just joking guys, but renting a gun sure would save a huge truckload of misery while traveling. I for one will seriously consider it next time.

Scott, the top portion of your quote would not even surprise me (in terms of him trying to pull something like that off), not even a little. I have the upmost confidence though that most foreign outfitters would tell our " joke " to piss up a rope. Good days ahead though 2016 is right around the corner, just hoping there is still an untaxed corner by the end of 16. Hell, I'm hoping there's a 16, period. NO LOL

I hope all of our friends in Africa know I was joking!:D

Hogpatrol. Get on the IRS website and do it yourself. BE CAREFUL FOR POP UPS!! If you stay on the OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT website, it will take no longer than ten minutes, (took me five) and you will acquire your EIN immediately, and totally free of charge. You will check "Sole Proprietorship". Where it asks for "purpose" make certain you check the "other" box, and write, "FOR AES USE ONLY. This is the simplest part of the whole process. Do this yourself, because I can see paying someone else to do the rest. Kevin

I've already talked to one guy who apparently got off the official site and at the end of "signing up" for the EIN it asked for a credit card and $247.:eek::eek:

He stopped.

I wonder what site he was on?

I just did mine on Friday and there was no request for money. I just got to the end of it and my new EIN showed up in a letter in PDF format that I printed out and also saved on my computer.

Don't know, some link that sounds like a real link but is a scam it sounds like...

There are all kinds of sites out there that will "help" you obtain just about anything and then they ask for your CC number.

You have to be careful when you do a search on the internet and make sure that you are on a actual US Government web site.

Thanks woods1126 for the information. It took me about 5 minutes on the IRS site to get my EIN and will try later the AES to get ITN (hate all these abbreviations!) This is all so crazy banana republic stuff that is not even funny.

It was me.

The site address looked legit...but it was not! I think the "IRS" part was missing IIRC.

When I was doing some internet research yesterday I came across a warning on a gov site that said there are counterfeit sites out there charging for EIN.

I just returned from my visit at the Houston CBP office (7141 Office City Dr Houston).

Both agents at the office said they knew nothing of this new ITN requirement I spoke of. The agent who took care of me not only signed my 4457, he printed his name and phone number on it and said "anybody gives you grief you tell them to call me".

While I was in confirming ser# another guy showed up to do the same thing...and he was asking the same questions I was about the new requirement.

This rattled the agents, so they told me to hang around a minute, they were going to call Washington.

Half hour later the agents come out and tell us that we were correct...but the website is new and has glitches "so don't worry about it, the 4457 will get you out and back just fine".

They did give us a name and number...supposedly the guy in charge of this roll-out: Vincent Huang at 202-325-1007.

I have already left him a voicemail! Hope to hear from him soon.

Perhaps if he gets several dozen calls on this they will re-think their strategy??

Hello everyone, my close friend, who I mentioned was going to attempt to obtain my ITN for my upcoming SA trip this coming Wednesday the 8th, has been SUCCESSFUL!! I know it wasn't necessary for this trip, but we wanted to see just how hard it would be to actually go though all the hoops and obtain the actual ITN nimber. As I mentioned in an earlier post, my friend was a Federal employee for over thirty years, and very accustomed to government paperwork. In his words, the AES is very hard, because of verbiage not geared toward hunters, but exporters. I myself have no idea what and how he ended up with the number, but he just emailed me the printable document. I just wanted everyone to know, IT CAN BE DONE!! . Kevin
