Guys, I am struggling to see how the CZ action can reliably house the 505 Gibbs. To my mind, the bolt diameter is just not there. How does the head support the cartridge? What exists opposite the extractor, seeing how the lug is not extended (such as with the RSM bolt head)? Does anybody have a CZ in 505 Gibbs which they could share some images of, particulary the action (magazine, feed rails and ramp), and the bolt (the head, most of all)?

I've examined the CZ550 in 416 Rigby and, in my opinion, this is the upper limit, with regard to head diameter. Below is an image of a CZ bolt head, 416 Rigby. Not much remains opposite the extractor, certainly not enough to accommodate the Gibbs (my opinion...could very well be wrong on that one...hence the thread because, after the Montana Rifle Company DGR, CZ is the next most affordable option ).

Matt would be the fellow to ask on this one. I'd bet he will be along here in a few.

Haven't heard of any failing so they must take the head pressure just fine. If there was a problem we would hear it on this forum.

I presume the system works and can reliably manage bolt thrust, but I'm curious as to how CZ deals with the head diameter (supporting the case head, most of all), and how the cartridges stack in the magazine box (and how they ride the rails, into the chamber). There is an optimum, in this regard, and the CZ seems a bit small to accomodate what would be considered best (small with regard to bolt diameter and mag well width).

you called? :A Banana:

unfortunately im not the best person to ask. i have never had the chance to examine a 550 action thats set up for the 505 Gibbs cartridge. from my understanding the CZ 550 action can not only handle the 505 Gibbs but also the slightly larger 585 HE. we should have @ActionBob post a picture of the bolt face on his CZ.

Hey guys;
I'm not at home and have to fly out this weekend so not sure if I can get to it. But I think your concerned about the wrong issues regarding the bolt. The bolt feeds and extracts fine, and I think it is an accurate gun but I don't shoot it as often as I would like... It has heavy recoil and has a lightening effect on the wallet with each cartridge shot!

The feeding and keeping the shells in the box are the issues. I think it is very capable. But needs to be machined correctly.

I'll try to post up some pics... Let me look for what I have and I'll get more when I can.

AND I got a call today from the FFL that my Ruger RSM 505 Gibbs is in! So I can give you a side by side comparison after I pick it up. Hopefully Friday. And just for giggles, the Ruger RSM 458 Lott showed up yesterday... Christmas in March! I do have the Ruger in 416 Rigby at home in the safe as well... .Still need a RSM in 375 H&H.

My friend had one in 505 Gibbs. Never had a problem with it except when it fell off his shoulder and the barrel hit his hunting partner in the head. He had one hell of headache and he can say he got hit with a 505 and survived!

Never had a problem with mine , feeds well and the mag works.

spooksar, can you take a picture of your bolt for us?

thanks

Thank you for the thorough reply, and the offer to compare the CZ to the RSM.

By the way, I see that you live in central Minnesota. I live in southeastern Minnesota, in a small town called New Prague, which is about 45 minutes south of the Twin Cities. Small world.

Hey on occasion I get to Dassel. Or the TC... could possibly meet up and show you the guns first hand, but might be a while before I get there, like May/June?

Thank you. I very much appreciate you having taken the time to share this image.

Truth? I carry a 505 Gibbs around in my pocket every day (except when I fly, of course). It's become something of a totem. Some day a rifle will come alongside to match...

thanks Spooksar!

I originally wanted a CZ in 505 Gibbs but was scared off due to the amount of bolt face remaining. It seems that fear was unfounded. I think the 505 Gibbs cartridge is a bit more impressive and probably easier to make feed and function correctly than the 500 Jeffery. I do love my 500 Jeffery though ... :)

that 500 Jeffery is no slouch of a cartridge! if one sticks to factory loads then the 500 Jeffery is much more powerful then the 505 Gibbs (570gr .510" bullet at 2300fps).

i picked the 505 Gibbs for similar reasons you picked the 500 Jeffery. i didnt like the idea of a rebated rim and was concerned it would have regular feed issues. it also helped that the 505 Gibbs cartridge just looks impressive!
