New USA requirements in addition to the form 4457

I'm not sure if this has already been discussed but......

I just realized that I was assigned an EIN several years ago for estate/trust planning documents in the name of my insurance trust. As far as anyone knows, once you have an EIN assigned that's the only one correct? In other words, can you have have multiple EIN's? I would think maybe if you have multiple DBA's, businesses, etc.?

And, more importantly, would this estate planning EIN suffice for the purposes of the AES Direct website?

This might be an option for those who have small businesses, estate planning docs, etc.? It still doesn't help those who are individuals but for those that do, maybe there's a little hope?

JimP............thanks.............you are probably right, but the law says specifically that CBP must check the gun and ammo within 8 hours of departure. Not TSA. Since there is no CBP office within 5 hours of me, and the one 5 hours away is closed at the times I depart, I am a little nervous about leaving without my rifle. ...Perhaps it will be sorted out by this Summer, and on Apr 1, I am not taking a rifle, so may work out. The problem with difficult to interpret and vague laws is that someone can make your life Hell if they have a strict, literal interpretation, and there's little you can do about it..............................best of luck in this.....................Bill

I think you may have this mistaken. I believe the time frame is a Minimum of 8 hours before departure this must occur. No maximum that I can tell

sandman, looking through the EIN info I do believe that you can have several EIN numbers. in fact, the issue of the numbers are limited to "One per day."

Speculation, but I would guess that you would want the EIN you received for the other things separate from the EIN that you use for AES. I have one associated with my business S-Corp, but I'm not going to use that.

Actually, even with the help of a lot of individuals, I've decided to fold for this trip and just use the PH's rifles. I know him well enough to know his rifles and attention to detail, and he has offered to let me use whatever I want for the expense of the ammunition. I'm just not looking forward to basically checking rifles in four airports and obtaining three "permits" (one way) to have my rifles with me. It will detract some from the experience, but not much. I'll let this mess sort itself out and travel with them next time.

I feel a bit like a quitter in the matter, but then the only person affected is myself. I fly in 18 days.

Amflyer,

I agree, and one of my big reservations was using a EIN that is "linked" to east planning accounts, etc..........

As someone stated before earlier in this thread, I, like a lot of hunters, am a gun nut, and part of the overall hunting experience for me is taking a rifle that I have had built, trained with, hand-loaded for, etc. on the hunt with me. I am not so much worried about Africa, because I won't be going for another year or two, and I had already decided to use Robert with SSI for my trophy importation before all this mess started. Now that his company is going to assist their clients with obtaining this ITN information for firearms, to me, it's a no-brainer......

My big concern is that over the next few years I'm going to be traveling to Canada a lot (2016 - spring Vancouver Island Black Bear and fall NWT Mountain Caribou/Moose; 2017 - B.C. Stone's sheep/ mountain goat; 2019 - Alberta - RM Bighorn), New Zealand in the future, and on and on and on....

I have a custom sheep / mountain rifle that I'm gonna take with me for my sheep/goat hunts that I'll train with, hand-load for, etc.. In that situation, I'm less inclined to want to use a "camp gun" when I may need to "thread the needle" on a ram or goat where he stands, especially considering the cost of these hunts. I would always have a sense of uneasiness or uncertainty regarding a rifle and scope that I'm not familiar with, and I'm afraid that would shake my confidence to take shots I know I can make. I don't want to be second guessing myself....or worse yet, wound an animal and not find it. Plus, I just want to use my own rifle and that's what really aggravates me about this whole mess!

Anyway, I've got time, and I'm sure this mess will get sorted out........how, and all of the little nuances that can be used to screw with us, is what I think everyone is afraid of....

Good luck on your hunt.

I was able to successfully obtain the"ITN" number from the aesdirect website today.Once you have your EIN you have to pass a certification quiz before you can continue on and submit the"EEI" that is required to get the "ITN" number that you need.If you download the AESdirect user guide all of the answers are there you just have to find them.Once that is done and your acct is registered you click on "create new shipment" the gzide explains how to fiil this out correctly but i will attempt to give a couple of pointers....i hope it
helps.
Shipment information
Shipment ref # is a 17 digit number you make up.just write it down because you may need it later.
Transportation ref # is not needed.
FTZ is not needed
SCAC/IATA # look up name of airline (if delta choose"DELTA AIRLINES INC" and it will insert the corresponding code.
Conveyance--- name of airline
Inbond type and import entry# not needed.
"Routed transaction" no

UPPI section is pretty self explanatory its just your info.

Ultimate consignee section
Company--- your info
Company address--- address where you are going for instance

Erongo Lodge
Omaruru
Namibia

Ultimate consignee type---OTHER

Add commodity section

Schedule B/HTS #
look up firearm and what shows up in the box is what is needed.

Export code

Something to the effect of "temp export return to us in same condition"

License type

No license required.
You must then add commodity again for the ammo
Schedule B#

Look up ammunition and what comes up in the box is what you need.(dont be alarmed when it says "bombs, grenades, torpedoes" etc because when you see the rest of the definition(on a different website of course)it goes on to list rifle ammo and shotgun shells.apparently bombs, grenades and torpedos(not to mention guided missles )are all the same as it pertains to export.

Then click submit EEI and some popups will come up just read them and click on them.
The final popup will either tell you it was accepted or will list what is wrong so xou can edit it.(before submitting turn off popup blockers)
If you sign up for email alerts the ITN# will be emailed to you.

Sorry for the lengthy post but i hope this helps someone.once you get into it it is really not as complicated as it sounds good luck

So Trap123 obviously you were given an EIN. Were there any hiccups when applying for this online via the IRS website?

It was pretty easy other than it seemed like you were setting yourself up as a sole proprieter company and wgen it got to the part where it asks whar business you are in I chose other and typed in hunting........I wonder if i can now claim this safari as a business expense:whistle::whistle:

I hear you on the gun nut thing, sandman. If my wife knew how many pounds of RL 15 and 22 I've burned through in the last year getting ready for this trip, she would handcuff the riflecase to my ankle and make me take them, regardless of the mess.

I hear you brother......!

Step one done!! Of course I didn't expect any issues in Anchorage since I was heading to Seattle from here and not an international departure. It was business as usual. A pleasant TSA guy swabbed the outside of my Tuffpak and didn't ask for the key to open it.

Alaska Air checked Joyce's bags through to Dubai and mine to Seattle at my request because I know Emirates will need to check serial numbers per their policy and form.

More later if I have time in Seattle.

Cheers
Jim

Jim,
Have a great trip and safe travels. Thanks again for the CBP info.
Mike

From the other place I read @Frostbit got his rifles checked in with Emirates airlines in Seattle with no issue. He and his wife are on their way to what sounds like will be one heck of a safari.

Goes into affect April 3rd, I would think there shouldn't be any issues.

Well.......if this doesn't come under the heading of SNAFU (situation normal, all %^&$#@ up) I don't know what does. So I called the US Customs office about 5 minutes from here at Phx Sky Harbor Airport. I informed him of the information that I had concerning the AESDirect registration thing.

Him: Yeah we got that memo, but we're not enforcing that yet. So you SHOULD be okay.

Me: Well, that's not exactly making me feel good and confident. When are you going to enforce this rule?

Him: Don't worry about it.

Right!

Why do you think people work for any government?? They are the employer of last resort and will hire anyone with a pulse!!!!!!!!

Well used an EIN that I had issued 10 years ago for a Company the I was the sole proprietor, took the AES test, what a pain in the Az to get a access to the EEI required for the ITN. Tried to get a new EIN but was refused since I had one already issued in my name as a sole Proprietor, another I cant believe this is happening moment. Will be very interested in how this, or if this requirement is enforced or do saner minds prevail and some type of "fix" takes this AES requirement out of the picture for Hunters transporting firearms out of the USA for hunting or competitive purposes. the EIN webpage has no accommodation for personal use regarding the EIN or for Fullfilling Federal Regulations. I assume that once we, the individual passes the test and qualifies thru the AES, WE are in the import export business.

It seems that this entire system was set up for import/export business with EIN numbers.

Will everyone that is setting these accounts up now and getting new EIN numbers be in for problems a few years down the road when tax returns aren't filed on the number? Is it wise to make copies of all the pages on the government websites NOW to show the IRS what/why you were setting up a company/EIN in March of 2015. Will the headaches in the future outweigh the headaches now of using a third party to do this for you or hunting with camp rifles?

I'm not saying it is the wrong thing to do. I am also not trying to say it will automatically cause you problems. It just might be a good thing to contemplate prior to proceeding.

All the best.

Just think of all the small businesses that the Obama administration will be able to take credit for, in time for the 2016 elections.

I believe you may need a EIN for a third party to process the paperwork.

Well my dad worked for the gov't his entire adult life and he worked damn hard to do the best job he could. This was evidenced by the many accolades he received not only from the Fed gov't but also from the foreign gov'ts he interacted with. It was also supported by the numerous private companies who relied on him for guidance and the jobs they kept offering him.

When he died some years after retirement near Albany, NY, word spread down to D.C. and beyond. Condolences on his passing came from quite a few folks who had come to appreciate and respect dad's efforts.

Not all who work for the gov't are brain dead morons. Now my dad, a lifelong Republican, if he were alive could tell you plenty about the stupidity of our gov't on many avenues that perhaps you've not even thought of. But again, not all who work in the gov't are capable only of generating a pulse.

Many dedicate their lives to making the gov't better for at least what used to be mediocre pay and fighting what seems a losing battle.

a lifelong Republican is much like a lifelong Conservative when it comes to working for the government. I tend to see them as Species At Risk.
