.450 Rigby whats your opinion

Seen it at work, does the job. Got the Rigby name. Basically, a 460 Weatherby without a belt, loaded to more reasonable levels.

kano the .450 rigby is the .416 rigby case knecked up to .458 and using the 480grn bullet weight from the 450 nitro. paul roberts developed it when he still owned rigbys, and i remember seeing the first developement cartridges when i was paying him a visit. weatherby used the .416 rigby case as the basis for his .378 and then that went to the .460.......

The desire for a double is strong here! But like some I'm not sure the bank would make the loan required to buy one whatever it's loaded for. Been looking at some bolt action 458 s and drooling over them.

I literally did take out a loan from my work related / credit union, in order to buy my first double rifle (brand new Merkel SxS in .375 H&H, then I had it claw mounted with a Leupold compact 2.5x scope).
One of my co-workers poked fun at me about it until I reminded him how much his motorcycle loan was probably for / my best guess, according to what Harley-Davidsons were selling for at that time.
Don't get me wrong, I like Harleys but since I can only afford one or the other, the double rifle will win every time, not even a close call.

Makes sense to me Velo Dog

I have a CZ 550 in 450 Rigby. Haven't shot any 500gr bullets with it yet. I was using Hornady .458 350gr FP. Took it to the deer hunt camp just to mess around with. Ended up shooting a deer with it (long story).

I love it. It's very accurate. Yes it jiggles the fillings and just about everything else that can jiggle.........I have a lot of jiggle parts ;). When I shoot it off the bench I'm using a Caldwell Lead Sled with 3 x 25lb shot bags on it. Still moves back 6". I forgot the Lead Sled one day. I managed 10 rounds off the bench before everything in my body said enough!

I had asked several PH's and park wardens if they had any experience with it. Karl Stumpfe and some individuals he contacted got back to me. It was said that it's the most effective Cape Buffalo stopper they have ever used. As it has been mentioned it's basically a 460 Weatherby minus about 6%. Karl had sent me some load info. The loads were using Somchem powder. He said that at least you have an idea of where the velocity needs to be when reloading with North American powders.
Some of you may have seen these articles before but I'll post the links anyway just in case.

My friend gave me some 600gr Monolithic solids........I'm afraid to shoot them!
Seem to recall posting this before but can't find it....Maybe it was in the Big Bore Addiction Forum.

A custom built Rigby in .450 would be awesome. Good medicine for Buffalo and Elephant, at least that's what I have heard.

Even more, sell either (the Harley or the Merkel) in 10 or 20 years, and tell me which brought more.

A good rifle is always a good investment.

Not sure which one I would take either since I have both a 404 (well almost) and 450 Rigby. Probably the 404

My .450, probably my favourite .458 bore cartridge,

For a bolt action rifle on DG hunting it's probably the best caliber out there, was test shooting J.Greeff custom build 450 Rigby with a action from Granite Mountain some time ago. It's a good stopper for sure, must say that it' s bit softer and longer recoil and not as sharp as a 416.

nice rifle, whats the info/statistics on it?

It's an Empire rifle, 21" barrel with Sunny Hill cut double square bridges, 4+1 capacity, peep sight. Weighs about 9 3/4.

now are you sure you didnt just have the shakes on the morning after the night before???? :D Booze::D Booze::D Beer Bottle::D Beer Bottle::D Cheers::D Drunk::E Big Grin:
Har De Har Har. Nah don't do that anymore....I have a Big bore Calibre affliction....can't afford the morning, of the night before tomorrow today...urp!!! Camera takes good pics during the day but doesn't do too good at night. ;)

dear god, Velo Dog why did you have to bring up taking a loan for a double! i keep thinking about doing that but i keep telling myself its a bad idea. a Heym 88B "safari" in 450 NE 3.25"... must resist!

as for the 450 Rigby. i like the idea of the cartridge and when loaded to reasonable levels it should be very effective without pushing the pressure limits. can any one tell me how it compares to the 458 Lott?
