i went to the range today to play with the 505 Gibbs before i send it back again (see http://www.africahunting.com/threads/montana-rifle-company-dgr-505-gibbs-review.17055/). but man that 505 Gibbs sure packs a punch, i love it!

i was shooting three different factory loads Kynoch, Norma, and Corbon. the Kynoch loads are noticeably lighter then the other two which mirrors what ive read online. a couple different reviews ive seen clocked Kynoch Gibbs ammunition at only 2150 fps rather then the stated 2300 fps. i definitely prefer the Norma ammunition to the Corbon simply because the felt recoil is slower and easier to roll with. the Kynoch stuff is outright pleasant and feels like just a slightly harder push then my 416 RM. the Corbon had sharper harder recoil which will take some getting used to.

Kynoch: 525gr Woodleigh SP at roughly 2150 fps
Corbon: 525gr Barnes TSX at roughly 2300 fps
Norma: 600gr Woodleigh PP at roughly 2100 fps

i was only able to shoot 4 Kynoch, 3 Corbon, and 2 Norma cartridges before my gun began to let out (see other thread). also, took my new camera to the range and took a video of me sending a 600gr Woodleigh down range. dont mind my half dead look, i was having a lot of fun but had been up late the night before drinking and playing video games... :D Booze:

GsrMike welcome. Like Matt said the 5X caliber's are a ton of fun. The 500 NE is a good choice but if you want to play around with something a bit tamer you can look at the old bison rounds like a 50/90 sharps. But will warn you that the sharps, rolling block, 1885 highwall etc single shot's are a whole different big bore addiction.
 
For any of you guys that may still be looking for a .458 Lott, there is a nib RSM at Mike's Custom Shop in Montana for $2195. See it on Guns International.
 
that Ruger RSM sure looks nice! the price is a bit rich for my blood at the moment though.

if/when I get a Lott it will likely be a CZ with AHR's #1 upgrade. the price would be under $2k and the rifle would likely perform very well.

On the first shot I thought it was not much more recoil than my .404.
After 18 rounds I have to admit I did not look forward to the last two!

The Barnes 500 gr VOR-TX averaged 2176 fps.
The Federal 500 gr Woodleigh Hydro Solids averaged 2298.
Not surprisingly the Federals definitely had more recoil.

Much more fun than the office!

I will admit I'm only go or for about five shots before I start pulling down while shooting offhand. I'm building up though! :A Weights:

sounds like fun!

a 500gr bullet at 2176 fps is pretty easy to deal with but i could see 2298 fps being a bit of a handful.

Matt, thanks for posting the video. Sweet!!!

Still stinks that the MRC didn't work out. For many people, it's the only 505 they'll ever get the chance to own (those of us not smitten by CZ's 550).
 
The most gorgeous Lott I've ever seen (short of a Hartmann & Weiss) came from the Winchester custom shop.

gizmo, the 505 Gibbs certainly packs some serious recoil but after you get used to it, its not that bad. i was fine shooting the Norma loads but the Corbon loads left my shoulder a little sore. then again that rifle had a Winchester stock on it which have never completely agreed with my shoulder. in my experience you just need to keep shooting a gun and you will get used to the recoil. by "getting used to it" i mean the nerves in your shoulder will die and it wont hurt any more. (y)
