I'm quite eager to do a safari this year that is fair chase and free range. I'd like to see if anyone would be interested in offsetting my costs through a trade or a sale.

I have a custom built falling block rifle in .340 Weatherby Magnum. This gun has best English walnut that is near exhibition grade including glass bedding of the forend, custom grip cap, ebony tip and beautiful panel checkering. The gun has a mercury recoil reducer in the stock and a generous 14.5" length of pull. Trigger work has been done and a very costly bit of receiver work has occurred to greatly reduce the safety height so that positive and rapid ejection may occur. A custom 23" barrel in roughly a type 3 contour and a quarter rib completes the ensemble.

To have this gun made would easily cost over $7500 today. ($1500 wood, $3500 stocking and finishing, $1000 for the action, $700 for the safety work, $100 to fit the recoil reducer, $850 to build and fit the barrel)
I even have a box of Norma Ammunition for the gun.

The 340 Weatherby Magnum will push a 200gr accubond bullet at 3225fps in a factory load. Hand loads can go higher and the gun can also handle bullets to over 250 grains. It's about as much power as you can get out of a .338" projectile without going to a .338 Lapua bolt action gun.

I'd sell the gun outright for $4500 or consider a trade towards some of the costs of a free range, fair chase, no high fence Safari for 2015.

Gorgeous single Rook.
I'm not in the market, just appreciate fine work.
Which action is that ?
At $4500 I think this is an absolute steal for someone in the single shot market.
Best of luck with the sale.

Hi PaulT,

Thanks for your kind words. The action started as a Ruger #1 action which in turn was a modern rendition of the Gibbs Farquarsen. The big difference between the action as it is now and a number 1 action is that it was dressed down and the safety area was completely reworked.

The dangerous game crowd really frown on the number 1 action as made originally because the ejector can toss the cartridge out in such a fashion that it gets stuck near the safety. The fancier custom rifles will address this one way or another for rapid reload reasons.

Regards,

Troy

..well, Troy, I'm a dangerous game crowd and I'm not frowning at all. That is a stunning rifle..we may have to have a chat..

get a room ,fellas

The stock is indeed a thing of beauty! Good look on the trade idea!

Is the metal work by Glen Fewless? It looks like his craftsmanship.

It is a beautiful rifle but for two things. No sights and no barrel band swivel attachment point. It looks bald without those features, to my eyes at least.

We have similar tastes and agree as to what we both prefer. This gun is not what we prefer. It has no barrel band because that reduces accuracy, it has no iron sights because there is no point to shooting a 340 weatherby at iron sight ranges. A big bore would merit both the features you describe.

I agree on the caliber/sight thing. It just would look more "safari".

I do not agree about the barrel band reducing accuracy. Only drawback would be sling effect should one try to sling up hard. Otherwise there is no reason that it would.
