a question for you that may self-certify as elitists, purists or masochists:

On the average, which African game brought you the most pleasure in hunting, not finding, getting bested, laughed at by the prey and ultimately felt like the fairest chase adversary?

I'd like to begin a list of game species to pursue and I'd find nothing more gratifying than being schooled and humbled by the experience.

Thoughts?

A preliminary list of species of internet (not yet vetted or researched, just picked what's pretty)

Waterbuck
Blesbok
Nyala
Ostrich
Bushpig
Warthog
Eland
Croc
Hippo
Buffalo
Wildebeest
Hartebeest
Eland
Kudu
Bontebok
Sable
Roan
Bongo
Sitatunga
Giraffe
Zebra

stalking my nyala with archery was the easiest ......

stalking my kudu with archery was the most humbling, but very satisfying.

chasing my wifes wounded zebra was where we used the most exertion.(is extertioning a word)

missing out on an opportunity to get with in bow range of my sable hunt (which l tried for 5 days of a 10 day hunt ) was by far the bitterest ,but now near 5 years on well worth the education ...

both the blue and black wilde beasts (riffle) were an effort and fun .great way of mountaineering at the east cape

my stienbuck ,which in a sense was the maybe too easy ,as we were walking back to get the ute after walking up the black wildebeest ,very gratifying , and felt like id kicked a big goal as ive always wanted one

being with my wife when she took her giraffe , was the coolest .way coolest , and the most work after the hunt
. seconded by the hunt where she walked up her first red deer

walking up my lioness ,with archery was by far and away the most exciting thing l have ever done .hunting or other wise......

ive taken a few other animals in Africa as well , and loved the experience but these few are just the ones that jumped out at me when I read your post .

Bushbuck - don't care if I was hunting them on a 1/4 acre lot with 20 foot fences and razor wire on top, they will get away from me

All African game animals are what my dreams are made of for many years now however, the following three seem to be the best at humbling/contradicting what otherwise should be my better stalking ability:

Bushpig
Cape Eland
Nyala

These can evidently read my mind and/or smell me a mile away, whatever, trying to sneak up to any and all of these three specific specie has been very humbling but, that is what makes hunting them so rewarding.

Many days tracking Cape Buffalo was worth the effort.

Nyala hunting spotting and then trying to get in range was also exciting.

Walking across ground that a mouse could not hike in for my Kudu as nerve racking as we started at 415 yards and were able to close to with in 175 yards to make a great shot at sunset...we stopped about every 50 yards to see what the Kudu was doing. It helped having the sun to our back on the stalk...

Eland and Sable have avoided me to this point....

The one animal I had to do an army crawl to approach was most memorable. Species not really important, but it was a springbok. Second most memorable was the bushbuck I took after I, my PH, local landowner, and tracker spent four hours glassing for from one ridge across to another.

Bongo. Took 12 days before I fired a shot. Describing conditions as sub-human is to dignify them.

Elephant took 9 days of very hard hunting, up a 3:30 am, drive for hours, walk for miles, see lots but not the right one in the right spot for a shot, then drive for hours and to bed late, hungry, hot, cold dog eared tired and the greatest hunt of my life!

Buffalo, to have a buffalo bull jump up literally 3 or 4 yards from you in thick brush will get your blood up real fast!

For PG, bushbuck was a huge challenge, almost like a smaller and more secretive version of buffalo. Cape eland just trying to get into a position for a shot. Easy to find but darn difficult to get up close enough and can cover some ground!

Springbuck are surprisingly humbling.
